README

Doppel

Made by RUDYHILL.

Doppel, as in doppelganger: a second you.

AI bots for BONELAB that are real player bodies, not NPCs. A bot has the same rig you have: real hands that grab, real legs that walk and jump, a head that looks around. It moves the way you move, because it learns from recordings of you.

This is a test version. Expect rough edges, and please tell me what breaks.

What the bots do

  • Walk, run, jump and roam the map on their own, or follow you.
  • Fight zombies, NPCs and enemy bots with guns, melee weapons and fists. They pick up weapons they find, reload, take cover, and put their weapon away when they do not need it.
  • Climb walls with their bare hands. You can climb any surface the same way: close an empty hand on a wall to hold on.
  • Drive vehicles they were shown how to drive, and follow you by car.
  • Pick things up and try them out, then use them the way you showed.
  • Go and try whatever you point at.
  • Ride along in your car, and drive cars of their own with friends riding along.
  • Surrender when badly hurt, and join your side if you spare them.
  • Get downed friends back up.
  • Fight as a team: the bigger side pushes, the smaller side falls back while shooting.
  • Fist fight with blocks and dodges, sit and chill, shove things over, bring you things and play catch.

Bots only use what is on the map. Spawn a gun if you want them armed, spawn a car if you want them to drive.

The menu (BoneMenu > Doppel)

Option What it does
Spawn bot A friendly bot.
Spawn enemy bot A bot that fights you.
Remove bots / Bring bots to me What they say.
Play on its own The bot decides what to do: roam, fight, pick things up, drive.
Stand still / Follow me What they say.
Practise driving Bots drive again and again and keep what works better.
Show what it is thinking A line of text over each bot's head.
Learn from me Watches everything you do and learns from it.
Forget the last 30 seconds Throws away the last half minute of learning.
Forget what it learned Clears what the bots worked out by themselves.
Moves (record in slots) Short moves you record yourself: idle, walk, run, jump, punch, melee, pick up and more. Pick a slot, then hold both sticks down to record. The record shortcut can be changed to any button, or two buttons, under Moves > Record shortcut.
Record clone / Play clone / Loop clone Record everything you do and have a bot repeat it exactly.
Copy my avatar Bots take the avatar you are wearing.
Pop-up messages Turns the on-screen messages off or on (they still go to the log).

It comes with recordings

The mod includes the maker's own recordings (moves, climbing, driving, item use), so bots know how to move from the first start. They are copied into UserData/Bot Player the first time the mod runs and never overwrite anything you recorded yourself. Record your own and the bots use yours.

Known issues

  • Driving in tight places is poor: lots of backing out.
  • Climbing sometimes fails at the top edge.
  • Punches mostly land on shoulders, so they do little damage each.
  • On slopes, cars can slide; a bot driving uphill may give up.
  • Drive-bys (shooting from a car) and hand-gesture orders are not finished and are off.
  • A bot can only use an item the way a recording shows.

Install

Use a mod manager (r2modman or the Thunderstore app), or copy the Mods and UserData folders into your BONELAB folder. Needs MelonLoader and BoneLib.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

1.4.0

New

  • Ride along in cars. When you sit in a car, your free bots walk over and take the empty seats, and get out when you do. Bots also ride with each other: when a bot drives off, its friends nearby jump in, and the driver waits a few seconds for them.
  • Bots drive real cars, not only the go-kart: they shift out of park, hold the wheel and drive off. Comes with a driving lesson for the Sendal Sopper Sedan from BaBaCorp's Assorted Automobiles mod (if you have it); drive any car yourself with "Learn from me" on to teach them others.
  • Surrender. A badly hurt enemy bot may drop its gun and put its hands up. Other bots stop shooting at it. Walk up close and hold your fire a few seconds to spare it: it joins your side. Shoot it instead and the other enemy bots get furious (quicker and faster to shoot) for a minute.
  • Rescue. A friendly bot that goes down lies there instead of vanishing; another friendly bot runs over, kneels and gets it back up. You can too: stand over it for a few seconds.
  • Team tactics. The side with more fighters pushes in closer while shooting; the side with fewer falls back at a run while still shooting (it sidesteps instead if there is a wall behind it).
  • Sit and chill. In their free time bots sometimes sit down for a while and look around.
  • Physics play. Bots shove loose props over (heavy ones too), and sometimes bring you what they picked up, hold it out to you and set it at your feet.
  • Catch. Two bots sometimes play catch with a prop, throwing it back and forth a few times.
  • Pop-up messages toggle in the menu (they still go to the log). Remembered between games.

Better

  • Fist fights. Recorded punches are cut into single, fast punches thrown in combos (one long recording used to be played as one slow "punch"); bots fight close enough to land hits on the body instead of the other's guard, and they block or step back from incoming punches. In testing, bot-on-bot hits went from 4 to 29 in the same time.
  • Guns are held in one hand (the two-hand hold shook too much). Long guns are locked steady in the hand, so they no longer wobble, and are lighter while a bot holds them (back to normal when let go). A gun that ends up held at a wrong angle is re-gripped by itself.
  • Bot health +20% (fights ended too quickly).
  • Sprinting. Bots sprint (not fast-walk) when following you or chasing an enemy.
  • Climbing. Bots only climb when following you or chasing an enemy, and only onto places with room to stand: no more climbing out of the map.

Fixed

  • Bots waiting up to 25 seconds before aiming a gun while walking.
  • Fighting an NPC with a melee weapon set the fight distance to 999 m.
  • A bot ragdolled by another mod curled up and kept moving its arms; it now goes properly limp and gets up after.
  • Car doors knocking bots down: bots now pass through car doors (only the doors).
  • A bot getting into a vehicle being knocked over by it.
  • Bots picking up parts of the level (a button) to play with, and shoving car doors.
  • Starter recordings now also reach players updating from an older version (missing files only; your own recordings are never replaced).

Off for now

  • Shooting out of a moving car (drive-bys) is switched off: aiming from a seat is not right yet.
  • Hand gestures for orders (give a weapon, "break" and point to send a bot) are in, untested and off; turn on with orders = 1 in UserData/Bot Player/lab/tuning.txt to try them.

1.3.0

  • Multiplayer fix: another player taking hold of your bot no longer leaves it stuck and jumping on your screen (or stretched out of shape on theirs). Everyone in the lobby needs this version for the fix to hold.
  • Knocked down or dead, a bot is now fully limp: its arms and hands go slack with the rest of it.
  • Bots notice people running. One who runs straight at a bot makes it start, put its hands up and step aside; one who runs past is watched, and the bot looks where they are heading. If several run the same way, or there was a bang just before, it stops, looks where they came from and may get down. Now and then it jogs after a runner to see.
  • Bots of the same side meet: with nothing else on, one walks up to another, they wave, stand "talking" for a while (one gesturing, the other nodding, turn about) and wave as they part.
  • Bots crouch much more: stood about (no longer only if you recorded a crouch move), on some strolls, at a near bang, behind cover, and more often in a gunfight.

1.2.0

  • Multiplayer (second step, with the Fusion mod): enemy bots go for every player in the lobby, not only the one who spawned them. A hit on a bot counts from whoever struck it, on their own screen. A bot's punches hurt whichever player they land on.
  • Everyone in the lobby needs the same version of this mod.

1.1.0

  • Multiplayer (first step): with the Fusion mod, your bots are shown to the other players in the lobby, and theirs to you. Everyone needs this mod. A bot is run by the game of whoever spawned it; the others see it move, hold things and shoot.
  • Without Fusion nothing changes.

1.0.1

  • Record shortcut is yours to choose: any button, or two together, held or pressed twice (Moves > Record shortcut).
  • Gunfights: bots keep moving, each in its own way, spread out from each other, dodge when a gun points at them, run behind cover, and crouch now and then.
  • Climbing: bots going about on their own climb much less and leave walls of 5 m or more alone; a bot following you keeps climbing until it reaches you.
  • Fixed: bots standing frozen, aiming at a bot whose body the game had switched off.
  • Fixed: enemy bots holding their fire when the player was near their line of shot.
  • Fixed: a bot with a gun being pushed up into the air by its own weapon.
  • Fixed: the thought label staying in the air after a bot was deleted.

1.0.0

  • First test version.
