README

Speedrun Mod

A gameplay-read-only timer and autosplitter for How to Fish.

Features

  • Automatic run start on the first playable frame of a newly created save.
  • Loadless timing and RTA timing modes.
  • Any% and 100% category selection.
  • Native-font in-game HUD with configurable scale, position, opacity, and visible rows.
  • Automatic splits for the five-island route and game completion.
  • Final time frozen on the first visible frame of the ending fade-in for reliable video retiming.
  • Final result shown during the ending sequence.
  • JSON run records containing splits, game version, tool version, and executable hash.
  • No gameplay state changes, item grants, movement changes, or progression writes.

Default route

  1. Island 1 — receive the keys that unlock the boat.
  2. Island 2 — unlock Island 3.
  3. Island 3 — unlock Island 4.
  4. Island 4 — unlock Island 5.
  5. Final Island — receive the final quest reward.
  6. Game Completion — successfully use the last ship and start the ending sequence.

Controls

  • F8 — show or hide the speedrun HUD.
  • F9 — emergency timer reset.

All other settings are available through the BepInEx config file. Installing ModMenu is optional and provides an in-game settings screen.

Manual installation

Install BepInEx 5, then copy the package contents into the game directory so the included BepInEx folders merge with the existing ones.

Compatibility

  • How to Fish 1.0.10
  • BepInEx 5.4.23.5

Speedrun rules can differ between communities. Confirm the accepted timing method and split policy before submitting a leaderboard run.

Development disclosure

This project was developed with substantial assistance from OpenAI Codex. The production assembly passes automated checks that reject known gameplay-mutating calls.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

0.2.10

  • Fixed a native Unity startup crash on systems where BepInEx plugin initialization runs before the graphics device is ready.
  • Deferred TextMeshPro speedrun HUD construction from plugin Awake to the first Unity player-loop update.

0.2.9

  • Fixed a first-launch crash when any-percent.json was missing and the default route had to be generated.
  • Excluded runtime BepInEx settings from route JSON serialization so unbound config entries cannot be accessed.
  • Malformed route files are now preserved as .invalid and automatically replaced with the default route.
  • Added an early initialization log entry to make future startup failures immediately visible.

0.2.8

  • Replaced the package icon with a real in-game speedrun HUD preview and a readable SPEEDRUN title.
  • No timing, split, or gameplay behavior changed in this release.

0.2.7

  • Moved the finish timestamp from the hidden final-ship input to the first visible frame of the ending fade-in.
  • The final interaction and accepted completion remain logged as instrumentation but no longer stop the timer.

0.2.6

  • Shortened the public plugin and package name to Speedrun Mod.
  • Added automatic loadless and RTA timing.
  • Added the native-font configurable speedrun HUD.
  • Added Any% and 100% category selection.
  • Added automatic five-island progression splits.
  • Moved the first split to the boat-key reward instead of the first boss death.
  • Corrected later island unlock indices for game 1.0.4.
  • Fixed solo-host completion detection at the final ship.
  • Added frozen final-time display during the ending sequence.
  • Added JSON run records and read-only production audits.
