README

LethalTV

Play your own videos on the ship TV in place of the vanilla clips.

  • Only the host needs the videos. Everyone needs the mod. Players who don't have a video download it from the host automatically, over the game's own connection. Downloads are cached, so the next session starts right away.
  • Synced for everyone. The host decides what's on and everyone sees the same video at the same point. It works like live TV: videos keep playing while the TV is off, then move on to the next one.
  • Vanilla controls still work. Press E on the TV to turn it on or off, like normal.
  • TV remote (new). Use the keybinds below anywhere in the ship, or within 20 m of the TV:
Key Action
\ Power on/off
[ / ] Previous / next video (synced for everyone)
- / = Your volume down / up (only you hear the change)
' Mute (only you)

To rebind these, go to Settings → Change Keybinds.

Host setup

  1. Put your videos in Videos\LethalTV (for example C:\Users\<you>\Videos\LethalTV). The folder is created the first time you launch with the mod. To use a different folder, set VideoFolder in BepInEx/config/brant.LethalTV.cfg.
  2. Use H.264 video with AAC audio in an .mp4 for best results. .webm, .mov, .m4v, .wmv, .avi, .mpg and .ogv might also work. The log tells you if a file can't be played.
  3. Host a lobby. Videos play in file name order. Set Shuffle = true to shuffle them instead.

Smaller files reach your friends faster. 720p at a few Mbps works well. Files you add while the game is running show up the next time you host.

Config (brant.LethalTV.cfg)

Section Setting Default What it does
Host VideoFolder (Videos\LethalTV) Where your videos are
Host Shuffle false Shuffle the playlist
Host AllowClientControl true Let other players change videos
Host MaxUploadKBps 8192 Upload speed limit for sending videos (0 = no limit)
Player Volume / Muted 1.0 / false Your personal TV volume (the remote changes this)
Player RemoteRange 20 Remote range outside the ship
Player DownloadAllVideos true Download the whole playlist in the background, not just the current video
Player MaxCacheMB 8192 Size cap for downloaded videos
Player MaxVideoMB 4096 Skip any single video larger than this

Downloaded videos are stored in BepInEx/LethalTV/Cache.

Notes

  • If the host has no videos, the TV plays the vanilla clips. The volume remote still works.
  • While a video is still downloading, your TV screen stays dark. Look at the TV to see progress in its tooltip.
  • The LAN mode transport is much slower at sending files than Steam lobbies.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

1.1.0

  • Videos now stream live from the host instead of downloading.
    • Players only hold a few seconds of video in memory. Nothing is saved to the drive.
    • Players only receive video while their TV is on and they're not inside the facility, so the host uploads much less than before.
    • The picture shows up a few seconds after you turn the TV on, even partway through a video.
  • Everyone (host and players) must update. 1.1.0 doesn't work with 1.0.x.
  • Only .mp4, .m4v and .mov files are supported now. Other formats are skipped, and the log tells you to convert them.
  • The old download cache (BepInEx/LethalTV/Cache) is deleted automatically.
  • Config changes:
    • New: StreamUploadCapKBps (host, default no cap) and BufferSeconds (player, default 10).
    • Removed: UploadLimitKBps, UploadLimitDuringRoundKBps, DownloadWholePlaylist, MaxCacheMB and MaxVideoMB.
  • Added an AI disclosure to the README.

1.0.1

  • Fixed lag and delayed voice chat while videos are being sent to other players.
    • Transfers now slow down by themselves as soon as they start adding delay to the connection.
    • Removed the Steam networking changes that let large amounts of video data queue up.
    • The default upload limit is now 512 KB/s in orbit and 160 KB/s while landed. These replace the old MaxUploadKBps setting.
  • Players now download only the current and next video by default. Set DownloadWholePlaylist to download everything.
  • Works with players still on 1.0.0. Only the host needs 1.0.1 for the lag fix.

1.0.0

  • First release.
  • The host's own videos play on the ship TV in place of the vanilla clips.
  • Players without a video download it from the host automatically. Downloads are checked and cached.
  • Playback is synced: everyone sees the same video at the same point.
  • New TV remote keybinds: power, next/previous video, and per-player volume and mute.
