README

Lost and Found

Version 0.1.7 — for Lethal Company v81

A purchasable, movable trash can for your ship that collects equipment dropped on death and left unretrieved when the ship departs, even if its owner has been revived.

How it works

  • When purchased, the bin appears in the middle of the ship. Press B to move it using normal furniture controls.
  • Equipment held at death is tracked in normal inventory slots, extra inventory slots, the v81 utility slot, and inside carried belt bags.
  • At departure, eligible items are collected into the bin. Non-scrap equipment and terminal store items qualify; ordinary scrap is left behind.
  • Revival does not cancel recovery. Equipment picked up by any living player, including its revived owner, is removed from the recovery list.
  • Picking up a belt bag also removes its contents from the recovery list. If the new holder dies, their equipment is tracked again.
  • After an item has been picked up, voluntarily dropping it does not make it eligible again. It must be part of a new death drop.
  • Look at the bin and press E to dump all available contents onto the floor in front of it. Rebound controls follow your game settings.

Unclaimed contents are saved with the host's save file, including native item save data and battery charge. Contents survive a team wipe and are cleared when the ship is reset after being fired. Storing the furniture does not empty the bin; retrieve it using the terminal's storage menu.

Installation

The host and every client need this mod, BepInExPack, and LethalLib 1.2.0 or newer. LethalSmokes is not required.

Install with your mod manager, or copy the ZIP's LostAndFound folder into BepInEx/plugins in your game directory or mod manager profile folder. Restart the game after installing.

Compatibility notes

The mod collects existing dropped items; it cannot recover equipment already destroyed, consumed, or removed by another mod before collection. Belt bag equipment is also recovered, including nested belt bags that use the native bag system. The bin returns the bag and its eligible contents as separate loose items. Other container types are not supported. If a bag has excluded or unsupported contents, the bag stays in place with those remaining items. Modded items retain the data their native save hook supports; custom state outside that hook may not be preserved. Missing item definitions remain saved in the bin until their mod is available again.

This mod has compilation, logic, and API checks. Live multiplayer and save/reload testing are still needed. To test, have a client die holding equipment in both normal and utility slots, depart, and empty the bin after returning to orbit. Also test saving with unclaimed contents.

Version 0.1.4 adds death confirmation, a final collection before crew revival, and detailed collection and empty-request diagnostics. If something fails, provide the host's and affected client's BepInEx/LogOutput.log files. Look for Death confirmed, Collection [, and Emptying Lost and Found to identify whether tracking, collection, or retrieval failed.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

0.2.0

  • Block emptying during landing, takeoff and travel; re-enable when landed or stationary in orbit.
  • Added sound when recovered items are emptied from the bin, and a sound when the bin is empty.
  • Removed the SecondsBetweenUses setting and fixed the button cooldown at two seconds.

0.1.9

  • Updated the package icon and description.
  • Added an amber lamp on the lid that blinks while recovered items are waiting in the bin.
  • Synced the ready state to all clients, including late joiners; lamp turns off when empty.

0.1.8

  • Explicitly allow spray paint cans as recoverable equipment.
  • Match cloned store item definitions by item and prefab name.
  • Do not treat a dropped item as held merely because its former holder has revived.
  • Log the name and type of excluded death-dropped items.

0.1.7

  • Collect only after ShipLeave begins; mid-mission revival no longer triggers collection.
  • Cancel queued recovery when the original network item is retrieved, including belt bag contents.
  • Check that the original despawns and refuse to issue a replacement while that original is still present.

0.1.6

  • Removed the plugin OnDestroy callback so destroying the loader component does not unpatch the mod.
  • Kept normal network disconnect and session cleanup.

0.1.5

  • Changed the furniture from automatically unlocked to a terminal store purchase for 200 credits.
  • Listed as an always-available ship upgrade; retains native movement, storage and saves.

0.1.4

  • Keep death-drop recovery claims after mid-mission revival.
  • Collect unretrieved death-dropped equipment regardless of its owner's current life state.
  • Cancel recovery when any living player, including the revived owner, retrieves an item or belt bag.
  • Support repeated deaths during one mission and clear old world-item claims when a new mission starts.

0.1.3

  • Stage inventory snapshots before death and commit recovery claims only after death is confirmed.
  • Prevent stale victim inventory from cancelling its own recovery claims.
  • Run a final departure collection before crew revival clears tracking.
  • Ignore stale references to dead holders when a dropped item is no longer held.
  • Add death, collection, skip-reason, and empty-request diagnostics.

0.1.2

  • Recover equipment stored inside dead players' belt bags, including nested native belt bags.
  • Return bags and collected contents as separate loose items.
  • Cancel recovery of bag contents when a teammate retrieves the bag.
  • Collect contents before bags and synchronize removals to prevent duplicates or stale bag entries.

0.1.1

  • Removed the green retrieval button from the trash can model. Interact with the can as usual.
  • Moved the plugin folder to the ZIP root.

0.1.0

  • Added free, movable Lost and Found trash can furniture.
  • Added host-authoritative recovery of dead players' dropped equipment at departure, including utility-slot equipment.
  • Added interaction to empty the bin in front of it.
  • Added persistent unclaimed contents and restoration of native item data and battery charge.
