Under the Big Apple

Under the Big Apple, a Skater XL map by ROARTEX89, ported to skate. by AltDoug through ReSkate.

New York streets above and a subway system below: tiled halls and platforms, an indoor skatepark built into the tunnels, and Alby's Skate Shack on the corner.

The subway halls The indoor park Alby's Skate Shack

What's in it

  • The whole map: the streets and buildings around the spawn, the subway halls and platforms, the indoor park and Alby's Skate Shack.
  • Lit underground, day and night: the halls, the park and the shop are lit from the author's own baked lighting, rebuilt as 534 skate. lights; the street lamps come on at night.
  • Road markings as the author drew them: lane lines, kerbs and "TAXI ONLY" on plain asphalt.
  • Solid where it matters: the indoor park floor, the stairs by the spawn, parked cars, cafe tables and the building fronts around the spawn have collision.
  • The author's grind rails, plus automatic rails on ledges, curbs and rails.
  • You spawn where the author put the spawn, on the street in front of Alby's.

Requirements

  • skate. (Steam) launched through ReSkate, on the game build ReSkate supports.
  • About 0.5 GB of disk space.

Install

  • With a Thunderstore mod manager: install it, then launch through ReSkate.
  • By hand: unzip into <ReSkate folder>\Mods\Under-The-Big-Apple\, so that reskate-levels.json sits directly in that folder. Start the game with ReSkateLauncher.exe; Under the Big Apple shows up in the map list.

To uninstall, delete the folder.

Known issues

  • Studio's lights show only with Lighting quality High or above in skate.'s settings; at Low or Medium the subway is much darker.
  • Not tested on Linux (Proton) yet.
  • If you sink into the ground, walk through a wall or find a rail that won't grind, please send the spot (or a clip) and your logs\ReSkate.log.

Credits

  • Original map: "Under The Big Apple v2" for Skater XL by ROARTEX89 (mod.io, 2022). This port was made without asking first. ROARTEX89, if you want it changed or taken down, reach out to AltDoug (the Thunderstore team that published this) and we will do it.
  • Ported by AltDoug: lighting rebuilt from the author's baked lights, road markings, collision fixes, materials, loading screen.
  • ReSkate and ReSkate Studio by Dingo-Shenanigans and the ReSkate team (GPL-3.0).
  • Spotbuilder by zeex64 (BundleRipper, GPL-3.0), used to convert the Skater XL map to Blender.
  • Built with AI: the conversion scripts, build pipeline and fixes were made with Claude Code (Anthropic, Claude Opus 5.5), directed and tested by a human.

CHANGELOG

1.0.0

  • First release: the Skater XL map "Under the Big Apple v2" by ROARTEX89 in skate. through ReSkate.
  • The subway halls, the indoor park and Alby's Skate Shack are lit at every time of day from the author's own baked lights (534 lamps rebuilt as skate. lights, tuned so the halls are lit without glaring ceilings); the street lamps come on at night.
  • Walls and ceilings are solid from both sides: no seeing through the map, no sunlight in the covered halls.
  • Objects that went invisible in skate. (trash cans, brick fronts, advert boxes, barriers) render as in Skater XL; shop windows are dark glass instead of white slabs, and the signs no longer glow flat white.
  • No flicker on the adverts and sign boxes in the tiled walls.
  • Road markings drawn the way the author made them (lane lines, kerbs and "TAXI ONLY" on plain asphalt).
  • Solid ground where Skater XL had none: the indoor park floor, the stairs by the spawn, parked cars, cafe tables and the facades around the spawn.
  • You spawn where the author put the spawn: the street in front of Alby's.
