πŸ”Š ASPECT NOTIFICATIONS β€” STAND-A-LONE πŸ”Š

RARE DROP. LOUD REACTION. ONE MORE RUN.

An Aspect just dropped. You deserve to hear about it.

Tired of finding out an Aspect dropped after you've already walked past it? Aspect Notifications gives rare Aspect drops their own custom sound. Pick your favorite MP3, throw a few in a folder, or let Shuffle All surprise you.

Your drops. Your sounds. Your questionable taste in victory music.

🎡 WHAT DOES IT DO?

When the mod recognizes an Aspect pickup spawning in the world, it plays a custom MP3 notification on your PC.

No extra hotkeys. No sound editing tools. No need to replace the game's audio files.

Feature What you get
πŸ”” Aspect alerts A sound when a recognized Aspect pickup appears
🎢 Your own MP3s Use files you choose, not a fixed sound pack
🎲 Shuffle All Pick randomly from your playable MP3s
🎚️ Volume control Set notification volume from 1% to 100%
▢️ Play / Stop Preview your sounds from the settings menu
πŸ“‚ Folder Path See exactly where to put your MP3 files
πŸ”„ Refresh Rescan your MP3 folder without restarting the game
βœ… Playable count See how many MP3s passed the file check

Aspect detection includes supported vanilla Aspect equipment and ZetAspects entries. Other mods that add new Aspects may need extra support.

Screenshot spot: Add a picture of the Select Sound dropdown in RiskOfOptions, showing your MP3 choices and Shuffle All.

βš™οΈ SETTINGS β€” KEEP IT SIMPLE

Everything lives in one RiskOfOptions settings section.

Setting What it does
Select Sound Choose a specific MP3 or Shuffle All
Volume Set MP3 volume, 1–100% (default: 85%)
Play Preview the selected sound; Shuffle All chooses a random file
Stop Stop the current preview
Folder Path Show the Sounds folder location
Refresh Rescan the folder and update available choices
MP3 Playable Show accepted MP3s out of all MP3s found

Example: 5/5 PLAYABLE means all five MP3 files passed the scan.

The dropdown shows Shuffle All plus up to 63 individual MP3 filenames. Shuffle All can still use every playable MP3, even when the folder has more than 63 files.

πŸ“ ADD YOUR OWN SOUNDS

  1. Open your active mod profile's BepInEx/plugins folder.
  2. Go to AspectNotifications_Stand_A_Lone/Sounds.
  3. Drop your .mp3 files inside.
  4. Open the mod's settings and press Refresh.
  5. Pick a sound from Select Sound, or leave it on Shuffle All.
  6. Hit Play to test it.

The complete folder path is also shown in the settings menu, so you don't have to guess which profile you're using.

MP3 ONLY. WAV, OGG, and other audio formats are ignored. An MP3 must also pass the Windows audio check to appear as playable.

πŸš€ INSTALLATION

Mod manager (recommended): Install the release through r2modman or Thunderstore Mod Manager when available. Install the listed dependencies, including BepInExPack and RiskOfOptions for the in-game settings menu.

Manual installation:

  1. Install BepInEx for Risk of Rain 2 and the required RiskOfOptions dependency.
  2. Place the compiled AspectNotifications_Stand_A_Lone.dll in your active BepInEx/plugins folder.
  3. Create BepInEx/plugins/AspectNotifications_Stand_A_Lone/Sounds if it does not exist automatically.
  4. Add your MP3s and launch the game through your mod manager.
  5. Open Settings β†’ Mod Options β†’ AspectNotifications_Stand_A_Lone to choose and preview a sound.

Using the source ZIP? That contains the Visual Studio project, not a ready-to-install compiled mod. Build the project first and install the resulting DLL.

πŸ‘₯ MULTIPLAYER β€” IMPORTANT

The sound plays locally, on the PC running the mod. It is not sent to everyone in the lobby.

  • Players who want to hear the notification should install the mod themselves.
  • This mod does not provide a sound fallback for players without it.
  • Multiplayer behavior across different host/client setups has not been fully verified.

This is an audio notification mod, not a system for changing Aspect drop rates, loot, or other players' inventories.

πŸ›‘οΈ KNOWN LIMITATIONS

  • Windows audio only: Custom MP3 playback uses the Windows MCI system. Linux, Steam Deck, and other platforms are not confirmed to work.
  • Not 3D audio: The alert is heard locally; it does not get louder or quieter based on your distance from the drop.
  • MP3 only: WAV and other formats were removed after unreliable playback tests.
  • Not every modded Aspect is guaranteed: Detection covers supported Aspect types and ZetAspects mappings, but unusual modded pickup systems may need special handling.
  • No automatic audio for other players: Each listener needs their own working installation.
  • File validation is not a full playback guarantee: A file can pass the scan but still fail to play on a particular Windows setup.

Tested so far: The mod has loaded in-game, recognized ZetAspects pickups, played MP3s through the Windows backend, and displayed the custom sound dropdown with five MP3 choices. Refresh and preview commands have also appeared in the logs. A full multiplayer test and every possible file format/codec combination have not been checked.

πŸ› BUG REPORTS & SUGGESTIONS

An Aspect dropped and you heard nothing? Tell us:

  • Which Aspect dropped, and whether another mod added it.
  • Which MP3 was selected (or whether you used Shuffle All).
  • Whether the Play button works.
  • What MP3 Playable shows.
  • Your relevant mods and BepInEx/LogOutput.log.

A screenshot of the settings menu helps with dropdown or display issues.

πŸ“œ VERSION HISTORY

The complete development history, including the failed audio experiments and fixes, is in CHANGELOG.md.

The short version? We tried spatial sound. Windows had other plans. MP3 won.

CHANGELOG

AspectNotifications β€” Changelog

Risk of Rain 2 | Standalone BepInEx mod

This changelog covers every version from 0.0.1 through 0.1.1. Early builds and failed experiments are included. Where detailed records are missing, the entry says so rather than guessing.

0.1.1 β€” Portable Sounds folder

  • Changed the Sounds folder to use the actual folder containing the installed mod DLL.
  • Fixed the extra AspectNotifications_Stand_A_Lone folder being created beside the mod-manager package folder.
  • Bundled MP3s can now be placed in a Sounds folder beside the DLL so they install with the mod.
  • Changed the Folder Path display to show only the last four folders, instead of a full Windows path.
  • Kept MP3 playback, the sound dropdown, and Aspect detection unchanged.
  • Testing: This source update still needs an in-game check after rebuilding the DLL.

0.1.0 β€” First public release

  • Prepared the MP3-only Aspect notification mod for Thunderstore.
  • Included the custom sound dropdown with Shuffle All, volume, Play, Stop, Refresh, folder path, and playable count.
  • Kept supported vanilla and ZetAspects pickup detection.
  • Updated the plugin and package version to 0.1.0.
  • Included the README, changelog, icon, and manifest in the release package.
  • Known issue: The folder path setting could show the developer's saved Windows path, and the mod could create a separate sound folder outside its installed package.

0.0.25 β€” Unity UI reference fix

  • Removed a direct Unity UI type reference that caused the CS0012 build error.
  • Changed the custom dropdown code to find its component at runtime.
  • Kept MP3 playback and Aspect detection unchanged.
  • The dropdown was later shown working in-game, with Shuffle All and five MP3 filenames visible.

0.0.24 β€” Dropdown compilation fixes

  • Changed how the custom dropdown accesses RiskOfOptions language data.
  • Fixed an invalid dropdown null check.
  • Attempted to resolve the missing Unity UI assembly reference.
  • One Unity UI reference error remained in the next build attempt.

0.0.23 β€” Custom sound dropdown

  • Replaced the enum-only dropdown attempt with a custom filename selector.
  • Added Shuffle All and individual MP3 choices.
  • Added logic intended to rebuild the choices when Refresh is pressed.
  • Supported up to 63 individual dropdown entries; Shuffle All could still use every playable MP3.
  • Initial build had RiskOfOptions access and Unity UI reference errors.

0.0.22 β€” Dropdown setup fix

  • Fixed the attempt to assign to a read-only config description.
  • Defined dropdown choices when the setting was created.
  • Issue found: RiskOfOptions' standard dropdown requires an enum, not a string. Settings failed to register and the menu appeared blank.

0.0.21 β€” First dropdown attempt

  • Replaced Selected, Previous, and Next with a Select Sound dropdown.
  • Added Shuffle All and individual MP3 filenames as choices.
  • Kept volume, preview, folder path, refresh, and playable count.
  • Issue found: A read-only config description caused a compile error.

0.0.20 β€” Cleaner source comments

  • Removed excessive line-by-line code comments.
  • Kept short headings explaining each section's purpose.
  • Made no intended changes to playback or detection.
  • In-game testing confirmed the mod loaded and recognized five MP3 files.

0.0.19 β€” Compile error fix

  • Initialized the audio validation error variable to fix CS0165.
  • Updated the source and project version numbers.
  • Kept the MP3-only player and settings unchanged.

0.0.18 β€” Selected sound controls

  • Added Selected at the top of the settings.
  • Added Previous and Next buttons to cycle through MP3s.
  • Supported one chosen MP3 or Shuffle All.
  • Used the selected sound for previews and Aspect notifications.
  • Issue found later: Previous and Next changed the selection without updating the visible text field.

0.0.17 β€” MP3-only rebuild

  • Removed spatial audio and WAV support.
  • Removed Unity audio decoding and experimental test tones.
  • Removed experimental broadcasting for players without the mod.
  • Kept the working Windows MCI MP3 playback system.
  • Combined options into one settings section.
  • Kept volume, Play, Stop, folder path, Refresh, and playable-file count.
  • Preserved automatic Aspect detection and random MP3 notifications.

0.0.16 β€” Unity audio test tools

  • Added a generated Unity test tone to check sound output without loading a file.
  • Continued testing spatial previews and stop controls.
  • Added more playback diagnostics.
  • Result: The Unity audio path still failed in testing.

0.0.15 β€” Manual WAV decoding

  • Added a manual PCM WAV decoder for experimental spatial playback.
  • Supported several common PCM sample formats.
  • Added more detailed scan and playback logs.
  • Kept Windows MCI playback for MP3 files.
  • Issue found: Spatial mode could still choose an MP3 it could not play.

0.0.14 β€” Spatial audio diagnostics

  • Expanded testing of sound attached to Aspect pickups.
  • Confirmed Aspect detection was still working.
  • Found that Unity could return an empty decoded clip for an MP3.
  • Kept legacy MP3 playback as a separate option.

0.0.13 β€” Experimental spatial audio

  • Added an experimental Unity spatial playback mode.
  • Kept Windows MCI as the legacy playback mode.
  • Allowed testing of directional sound without removing the working MP3 backend.

0.0.12 β€” Playback development

  • Continued development between the Windows MCI builds and spatial audio experiments.
  • Exact changes are not fully documented.

0.0.11 β€” Audio backend cleanup

  • Continued work on Windows MCI playback for local sound files.
  • Tested MP3 and WAV handling; OGG remained unsupported.
  • Left directional playback unimplemented.
  • Kept unverified network sound broadcasting disabled.

0.0.10 β€” Aspect notification test

  • Confirmed detection of a ZetAspects Aurelionite pickup.
  • Logged an MP3 playback command after Aspect detection.
  • Disabled the unverified native network sound fallback.
  • Kept notification audio local to the modded player.

0.0.9 β€” Audio and settings testing

  • Continued Windows MCI playback tests.
  • Worked on sound selection and the earlier vanilla sound fallback.
  • Found a saved vanilla sound option that no longer matched available choices.

0.0.8 β€” Windows MCI audio

  • Introduced Windows MCI playback for custom sounds.
  • Reduced reliance on Unity's audio decoder.
  • Continued using the custom Sounds folder.

0.0.7 β€” Delayed scanning and WAV fallback

  • Delayed scanning for sound files during startup.
  • Tried Unity's decoder first and manual PCM WAV decoding as a fallback.
  • Kept the filename browser and Shuffle All option.

0.0.2 β€” Early development

  • Continued work on the first notification system.
  • Exact changes are not fully documented.

0.0.1 β€” Initial build

  • Created the standalone AspectNotifications mod.
  • Began detecting Aspect drops and playing custom notification sounds.

Current features

  • Detects Aspect drops, including supported ZetAspects pickups.
  • Plays custom MP3 notifications using Windows MCI.
  • Offers a Select Sound dropdown with individual MP3s and Shuffle All.
  • Includes a 1–100% volume slider, Play and Stop preview controls, a shortened folder path display, Refresh, and playable-file count.
  • Looks for MP3s in Sounds beside the installed DLL, including sounds bundled with the mod.
  • Plays audio locally. Spatial playback, WAV support, and non-modded-client broadcasting were removed.

Testing notes

  • The dropdown has been shown in-game with Shuffle All and all five test MP3s listed.
  • MP3 preview playback and file scanning have been confirmed in logs.
  • Adding a new MP3 and refreshing the open dropdown without restarting still needs a separate test.
  • The v0.1.1 portable folder change needs an in-game test with the rebuilt DLL.
  • Some early version details are incomplete; this changelog does not claim unverified fixes worked.
