README

ThreeChoiceChests

By Riiin.

Make every chest a choice. Instead of dropping one random reward, supported chests let you pick one of three items.

The item the game originally rolled is always included among the choices. The other options come from the appropriate reward pool, so the chest's normal item tier and category rules still apply.

What it changes

Supported containers:

  • Small Chest
  • Invisible Chest
  • Large Chest
  • Legendary Chest
  • Damage / Healing / Utility Chests
  • Large Damage / Healing / Utility Chests
  • Equipment Barrel

Hover to see what you're choosing

Move your cursor over any candidate to see its name and a short description. The tooltip uses the game's familiar inventory-card appearance and item-tier colors.

When playing in Simplified Chinese (zh-CN), ThreeChoiceChests provides 217 custom short descriptions for supported vanilla items and equipment, including clearer effect summaries and colored mechanic highlights.

Item names follow your current game localization. Other languages, modded items, and entries without a custom description use the game's available localized text instead. The descriptions are private to the ThreeChoice picker; they do not overwrite the Logbook or global item text.

The mod works independently of Riiin Chinese Retranslation. You can use either mod on its own or install both.

Multiplayer: the reward goes to the opener

When you open a supported chest, its reward is assigned to you. After you choose, the item goes directly into your inventory rather than dropping on the ground for another player to grab.

Multiple pending rewards are handled by a single shared queue. Players take their turns choosing; simultaneous per-player choice windows are not supported yet. Each reward stays assigned to the person who opened its chest.

Sale Star support

If a supported chest produces more than one reward, including Sale Star bonuses, each actual reward gets its own three-choice selection. Each selection uses the tier and category of that specific reward.

For example, a Legendary Chest with a Sale Star bonus can give two separate red-item choices. The base game still handles Sale Star activation, consumption, and reward rolls.

Keep moving after opening a chest

Once you've successfully opened a chest, you can move away without the ThreeChoice selection panel closing because of distance. This only affects this mod's own picker; ordinary chest interaction distance and the Artifact of Command are unchanged.

Scoreboard and pause support

  • You can open the scoreboard / inventory while a choice is pending. The choice panel temporarily hides and returns with the same candidates, without rerolling or losing the reward.
  • Escape / pause-menu interruptions can be recovered without consuming the pending choice.
  • ThreeChoiceChests is compatible with UniversalPause. Without it, the mod retains its built-in single-player choice-pause fallback.

Intentionally unchanged

These containers retain their vanilla behavior:

  • Lunar Pods
  • Void Cradles
  • Free Chests
  • Command Chests
  • Adaptive Chests

Installation

Install through r2modman or Thunderstore Mod Manager.

For manual installation, put ThreeChoiceChests.dll inside a folder under BepInEx/plugins/, with the dependencies installed.

What's new in 1.3.1

  • Added working hover tooltips to the three-choice candidate icons.
  • Candidate tooltips show localized item names and short effect descriptions, with item-tier card colors matching the game's inventory tooltips.

  • Preserved the existing Sale Star support, multiplayer reward ownership, shared choice queue, and distance fix from 1.3.0.

This standalone mod does not include the separate AD/AP gameplay overhaul.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

1.3.2

  • Publish the existing generic Choice Extension API v1 for independent companion mods.
  • Expose stable reward identities, copied candidate data and queue/bind/success/cancellation notifications.
  • Allow optional per-candidate tooltip text without replacing the native choice workflow.
  • Preserve the existing reward ownership, native granting, shared queue, Sale Star behavior, Tab/pause recovery and short descriptions.
  • Remain standalone: no AD/AP calculations, growth storage or companion-mod dependency.
  • Advance the tested local API build's version metadata; no new gameplay changes in this packaging revision.

1.3.1

  • Corrected native tooltip availability configuration on ThreeChoice candidate buttons.
  • Bound localized candidate names and the existing short effect descriptions before the initial hover event.
  • Restored the working tooltip provider setup before applying optional native inventory colors.
  • Isolated native title-color lookup with a logged fallback to the working color if lookup fails or returns an invisible/invalid color.
  • Kept the shared native tooltip appearance and native item/equipment title-color sources without introducing a custom palette.
  • Kept the built-in Simplified Chinese descriptions and localization fallback for other languages and modded items.
  • Added tooltip cleanup and restoration when hiding, reopening or switching between choice panels.
  • Kept the existing multiplayer queue, Sale Star capture, picker distance handling and reward behavior unchanged.

1.3.0

  • Added complete native reward-batch capture for supported chests, including Sale Star bonuses.
  • Each actual reward enters ThreeChoice as an independent choice instead of bypassing the picker and dropping directly.
  • Each reward preserves its own vanilla rolled pickup, tier and category context.
  • Legendary chests use the same complete-batch capture path, including each native rolled red reward.
  • Added the successful native purchase's activator as a fallback for delayed reward ownership.
  • Removed distance-based dismissal for ThreeChoiceChests-owned pickers, so high-mobility players can move away after opening a chest without the choice UI repeatedly closing.
  • Preserved the existing global serial multiplayer queue, owner validation, direct grants, scoreboard recovery and pause/protection behavior.
  • Preserved all 217 Simplified Chinese short descriptions and rich-text colors.
  • No AD/AP functionality is included.

1.2.2

  • Removed the accidentally bundled AD/AP candidate attribute system from standalone ThreeChoiceChests.
  • ThreeChoiceChests now only handles three-choice rewards, candidate descriptions, queueing, picker recovery, pause/protection, and its normal UI behavior.
  • Candidate tooltips no longer generate, display, store, or synchronize AD/AP attributes.
  • Preserved the 217-entry Simplified Chinese short-description catalog and reviewed rich-text colors.
  • No changes to chest reward tiers, category restrictions, or special-container exclusions.

1.2.1

  • Corrected the public package description after the 1.2.0 upload.
  • No intended gameplay changes.

1.2.0

  • Added dedicated hand-authored Simplified Chinese short descriptions for ThreeChoice candidates.
  • Added reviewed rich-text coloring and on-hit / on-kill labels where applicable.
  • Kept candidate names localized through the game's active language tokens.
  • Preserved the existing queue, scoreboard recovery, pause/protection, and picker behavior.
  • Non-Chinese languages continue to use their original pickup descriptions.

1.0.2

  • Reworked scoreboard handling during an active three-choice reward.
  • The scoreboard/inventory can be opened normally while choosing.
  • Opening the scoreboard temporarily hides the choice panel instead of cancelling or consuming the reward.
  • Closing the scoreboard restores the exact same picker and candidates without rerolling.
  • Prevented the hidden choice panel from receiving input while the scoreboard is open.
  • Fixed the Command Artifact information panel appearing in the scoreboard when ThreeChoiceChests uses its internal picker.
  • Preserved normal Artifact of Command behavior.
  • Retained the existing pause-menu recovery and reward queue behavior.

1.0.1

  • Fixed unresolved chest rewards being consumed when the scoreboard dismisses the choice UI.
  • UI dismissal no longer completes the choice or advances the reward queue.
  • Preserve the original picker and candidates; restore an interrupted prompt after the pause menu closes, without rerolling.
  • Finalize the reward only after the game accepts a valid candidate selection.

1.0.0

  • Initial release.
  • Added three-choice rewards for supported standard, category, and legendary chests.
  • Added three-choice rewards for Equipment Barrels.
  • Preserved original item tier and category restrictions.
  • Added a reward queue for rapidly opened supported chests.
  • Left Lunar Pods, Void Cradles, Free Chests, Command Chests, and Adaptive Chests unchanged.
