StarterSpells
Choose your wizard's starting spell in The Spell Brigade, including the spells no wizard starts with.
How to use
In the main menu, a small panel at the bottom of the screen shows your current wizard and their starting spell:
STARTING SPELL - Moon Mage
[<] [icon] Bomb Launcher [>]
F6 / F7 to change - F8 to hide
- Click the arrows, or press F6 / F7, to cycle through the spells.
- Each wizard remembers their own pick. Choose Default for the wizard's normal spell.
- The wizard info panel in the menu previews the spell you picked.
- The panel only appears in the main menu, never during a run.
You can also set picks in your mod manager's config editor (or BepInEx\config\girthy_mods.StarterSpells.cfg): there's one dropdown per wizard under Starting Spells.
Multiplayer
- Only your own wizard changes. The game equips each player's starting spell on that player's own machine, then syncs it to everyone, so other players don't need this mod.
- Works with MoreWizards and with vanilla lobbies.
Config
| Section | Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting Spells | (one per wizard) | Default | Starting spell for that wizard |
| General | AllowLockedSpells | false | Allow spells you haven't unlocked yet |
| Picker | ShowPicker | true | Show the picker in the main menu |
| Picker | ScreenPosition | BottomCenter | BottomCenter, BottomLeft, BottomRight, TopCenter, TopLeft or TopRight |
| Picker | PreviousKey / NextKey | F6 / F7 | Keys to cycle spells (Unity Input System key names) |
| Picker | ToggleKey | F8 | Show or hide the picker |
Notes
- Spell names use the game's own translations, so they appear in your language.
- A wizard's passive that refers to "your starting spell" (like the Vampire Mage's life steal) follows your pick.
- Locked spells are skipped unless
AllowLockedSpellsis on.
Multiplayer settings
Your own starting spells and picker settings are yours. AllowLockedSpells comes from the host while you're in their game; if the host doesn't have the mod, locked spells stay locked.
CHANGELOG
1.1.1
- Host's rules for everyone:
AllowLockedSpellsnow comes from the host while you're in their game. Your own your own starting spells and the picker stay yours. Your config file isn't changed, and your setting is back when you leave. If the host doesn't have the mod, locked spells stay locked.
Changelog
1.1.0
- The picker shows each spell's icon next to its name, using the game's own icons. Default shows your wizard's normal spell icon, and locked spells show dimmed.
1.0.2
- Fix: the picker's text (wizard, spell, hint) was invisible. The text boxes were shorter than the game font's line height, and TextMeshPro's ellipsis mode then draws nothing. Text now always draws, with roomier boxes, and long spell names shrink to fit between the arrows.
- The log now shows what the picker displays (
Picker: ...).
1.0.1
- Fix: the picker showed its arrows but no wizard or spell. The selected wizard is now remembered from the game's own selection calls, with fallbacks, and the log explains if it can't be found.
- The picker shows "Pick a wizard first" instead of blank text.
- Moved the picker to the bottom center by default, so it no longer covers the top menu bar. The setting is now
[Picker] ScreenPosition.
1.0.0
- First release: pick any of the 25 spells as each wizard's starting spell, using an in-menu picker (click or F6/F7) or the config file.
