Rift Magic
Tear the world open. Blink across the battlefield, dissolve whole hillsides straight into your stores, and bind your favourite animals to you across the rift: ride a war boar into battle, or a fire-breathing Battle Hen that grows to seven times its size.
Rift Magic adds two new Eitr staffs, rideable rift companions from any tamed animal, a trinket to call them to your side, and a new elite enemy for the Ashlands.
Features
- Riftwalker's Staff: blink along your line of sight, and open rifts that dissolve a 9×9×9 cube of the world and deliver everything it was worth to an anchor you planted.
- Staff of the Gnarled Root: poison bolts and clouds that rot your foes and mend your allies at the same time.
- Rift Saddle: turn any named, tamed animal into a rift companion. Bigger, tougher, glowing-eyed, and rideable, even the ones vanilla never lets you ride.
- Mounted combat: swing your weapon, draw your bow or cast your staff without leaving the saddle.
- Rift Tether: a trinket that pulls your companion through the rift to your side.
- The Riftling: a rare, elite Surtling of the Ashlands that blinks around the fight and blinks you with it.
- Rift Core: the heart of every rift item. Take it from a Riftling or forge it at the Black Forge.
Riftwalker's Staff
| Input | Effect |
|---|---|
| Primary (tap) | Blink forward along your line of sight. Creatures in the way are thrown aside. |
| Secondary (hold 5s) | Plant an anchor where you aim, or if you already have one, open a rift where you aim. |
| Both (hold 5s) | Clear the anchor, so you can plant a new one. |
A rift dissolves everything in a 9×9×9 cube and sends it all to your anchor as items, at the most it could ever yield. Every ore face, every log down to the last sub-log, and every pickable are taken, along with the full contents of chests. Creatures drop double their loot and always their trophy, and bosses take a heavy hit instead. Opening a rift costs 120 Eitr and a Surtling Core. A rift that finds nothing costs nothing, and letting go early cancels it for free.
Everyone nearby sees it all: your anchor's glowing sigil stands in the world for every player, with or without a staff, and other players watch your rift's sigil grow and its pillars of light fall.
Rift Mastery. The staff grows with your Rift Magic skill and its upgrade level. A blink starts at 16 m for 8 Eitr; at full skill with a fully upgraded staff it reaches 36 m for 4 Eitr, cast about twice as fast. The staff's tooltip shows your current numbers.
Staff of the Gnarled Root
| Input | Effect |
|---|---|
| Primary | A green bolt. Where it lands, enemies are poisoned and allies gain Regrowth, healing over time. |
| Secondary | A lingering cloud around you that pulses the same effect. |
Players and tamed creatures are healed; everything else is poisoned. Poison resistance and immunity work exactly as they do against a poison arrow.
Rift Companions
Use a Rift Saddle on a tamed animal that has a name, and it is bound to you across the rift:
- It grows 1.5× (the Battle Hen 3×, then 5× and 7× as its bond deepens), and its eyes glow purple.
- It gains 2.5× health, 1.75× damage, and takes 40% less damage.
- Feed it like a player. Health food raises its health, stamina food its riding stamina and stamina regen (a lot), and Eitr food its damage and toughness.
- The bond grows. Travelling, fighting and eating together earn it up to two stars.
- It cannot die. At zero health a pillar of light carries it home to your spawn point, where it recovers.
- It is yours. Only you can ride, command, feed, rename or unsaddle it. Everyone can pet it.
| Species | Becomes | Speciality |
|---|---|---|
| Boar | War Boar | A quick, sturdy mount, faster than you can run. |
| Wolf | Dire Wolf | Quicker than the boar, with a stronger jump. |
| Hen | Battle Hen | Breathes fire, jumps three times in mid-air, and floats down like a Feather Cape. |
| Lox | Titan Lox | Keeps its own saddle, now rift-shaded, and gains a jump. |
| Asksvin | Rift Strider | Keeps its own saddle, now rift-shaded, and gains a jump. |
| Moose | Deep North Monarch | Sprints at 15 m/s and tramples enemies in its path for heavy blunt damage. |
| Other tameables | Rift-Bound creature | Modded tameables work too. |
Riding
Every rift mount can jump; crouch to get off. Boars, wolves and hens get riding speeds of their own:
| Mount | Run | Sprint | Jump | Air jumps | Feather fall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| (you, on foot) | 4 | 7 | 1× | - | - |
| War Boar | 4.5 | 7.7 | 1.1× | - | - |
| Dire Wolf | 4.5 | 8.4 | 1.3× | - | - |
| Battle Hen | 3.8 | 12 | 3.5× | 3 | yes |
Speeds in metres per second. Attack from the saddle on any rift mount, Lox and Asksvin included. Swords, axes and fists swing, and bows, crossbows and staffs fire where you look. Your hits never land on your own mount. On a Battle Hen, secondary attack breathes fire where you look.
Your stable
- One of each kind: one boar, one wolf, one hen, and so on.
- One follower at a time: tell one to follow and the others go home through the rift to wait at your spawn point.
- Never left behind: if your follower ends up more than 100 m away, for example on the other side of a portal, it is pulled through the rift to you.
Rift Tether
A trinket that calls your companion to your side from anywhere in the world. Putting it on is the call. Middle-click it in your inventory to choose which companion it calls. It answers only if the companion is healthy (at half health or more), and then needs 10 minutes before it can call again.
The Riftling
A Surtling the rift got into: a third bigger, dark purple, and far deadlier, with 700 health. It blinks around the fight and throws blink bolts that hurt and throw you several metres in a random direction. Rare: it spawns only in the Ashlands, one at a time. Every Riftling drops a Rift Core, along with Surtling Cores, often Eitr, and sometimes its trophy.

Installation
Install with a mod manager (Thunderstore Mod Manager, r2modman) and the requirements come with
it. To install by hand, install
BepInExPack Valheim and
Jötunn, then put
ValheimRiftMagic.dll in BepInEx/plugins.
Multiplayer: every player and the server need the mod. Gameplay settings are admin-only and synced from the server.
Configuration
Almost everything is configurable in BepInEx/config/tmana.riftmagic.cfg, including costs,
ranges, damage, companion buffs, bond rates, spawn rates, and each species' riding speeds and
looks. Server admins may want to check the [Rift Harvest] section. Rifts take build pieces
apart for their full cost by default (HarvestBuildPieces). Stripping other players' inventories
is off by default (HarvestOtherPlayers).
With devcommands on, rift_summon [species] calls your companion of that kind to you, like the
Tether without the health check or the wait.
CHANGELOG
Changelog
1.3.0
- Your mount fights too. Secondary attack from the saddle makes your mount attack with its own bite, horns or tusks. From its first bond star it gains a special, paid for with your Eitr: the moose calls Eikthyr's lightning down its antlers, the asksvin lobs Staff of Embers fireballs, the lox shakes the earth, the boar charges, the wolf pounces and the hen's fire breath grows. Two stars make every one of them stronger.
- Your companions are on the map, marked with their trophy - where they are, or where you left them.
- Rested at home. A companion staying at your spawn point heals three times as fast.
- Level-up and saddling messages stay on screen long enough to read.
- Some rift companions now see with more eyes than they were born with.
- ...and what stirs beneath the thrashing waves pulls harder on the line, carries its rider high above the swell, and answers to a harpoon thrown by the one it trusts...
1.2.1
- Fixes 1.2.0 not loading. A bad setting name stopped the whole mod from starting, so none of its items, staffs or companions appeared. Everything is back.
1.2.0
- Followers keep a fitting distance. Big companions no longer shove into you trying to get close; each stops at a distance that suits its size.
- A worn saddle shows its own name, not the name of the saddle it borrowed its fit from.
- ...and a new mysterious unrest deep under the thrashing waves...
1.1.0
- A saddle per animal. Each is made of its own biome's materials - bronze and deer hide for a boar, silver for a wolf, black metal for a lox, flametal for an asksvin, Deep North hide and celestial feathers for a moose - so mounts follow your progress through the world. Surtling Cores hold the early ones together, Rift Cores the late ones.
- Saddles upgrade four levels, dearly. Each level makes the companion tougher and stronger and improves its riding stamina, speed and jump.
- A saddle's recipe appears once you have handled its materials and tamed that animal.
- The plain Rift Saddle still fits anything, and is now the dearest: Galdr Table, level 3.
- Companions bound before this update keep working; taking their saddle off returns a Rift Saddle.
1.0.1
- Blink reaches further and costs less: 16 m and 8 Eitr to begin with, up to 36 m for 4 Eitr at Rift Magic 100 with a fully upgraded staff (was 12 m and 20 Eitr, up to 26 m).
1.0.0
First public release.
- Riftwalker's Staff: blink along your line of sight; plant an anchor and open rifts that deliver everything they dissolve to it. Faster, further and cheaper with Rift Magic skill and staff upgrades.
- Staff of the Gnarled Root: poison bolts and clouds that harm foes and mend allies.
- Rift Saddle: bind a named, tamed animal as a rift companion. Boars, wolves and hens can be ridden, with jumps, air jumps and feather fall tuned per species; Lox, Asksvin and Moose keep their own saddles and grow with the rift. Fight from the saddle, breathe fire from a Battle Hen, trample with a Moose. Companions grow stars through a bond, and only their owner can ride them.
- Rift Tether: a trinket that calls your chosen companion to your side, every ten minutes.
- The Riftling: an elite Surtling of the Ashlands that blinks around and blinks you with its bolts. Drops the Rift Core.
- Rift Core: needed for the staff, saddle and tether. Forge one from ten Surtling Cores at the Black Forge.
