README

Rift Magic

Tear the world open. Blink across the battlefield, dissolve whole hillsides straight into your stores, and bind your favourite animals to you across the rift: ride a war boar through the Black Forest, a dire wolf through the mountains, and a moose through the Deep North.

Rift Magic adds two new Eitr staffs, rideable rift companions from any tamed animal, a trinket to call them to your side, and a new elite enemy for the Ashlands.

Features

  • Riftwalker's Staff: blink along your line of sight, and open rifts that dissolve a 9×9×9 cube of the world and deliver everything it was worth to an anchor you planted.
  • Staff of the Gnarled Root: poison bolts and clouds that rot your foes and mend your allies at the same time.
  • Rift Saddles: one per animal, each cut from its own biome's materials, turning a named, tamed animal into a rift companion. Bigger, tougher, glowing-eyed, and rideable, even the ones vanilla never lets you ride.
  • Mounted combat: swing your weapon, draw your bow or cast your staff without leaving the saddle, and have your mount attack beside you, with specials that grow with your bond.
  • Your companions on the map, wherever they are or wherever you left them.
  • Bears, tamed for a while with fish, berries or a pie held out to them, and kept for good with a Rift Saddle. Hold the Blueberry Pie or Rotten Meat Pie out to calm them.
  • The seal: a joke mount that needs no taming at all. It is doing its best.
  • Garden Beds: raised beds of cultivated soil you can build on any floor, crops growing under a roof.
  • Rift Tether: a trinket that pulls your companion through the rift to your side.
  • Rift Sorting Chest: put things in it and they fly off to the nearby chests that already hold them.
  • Rift Aegis: an admin-only trinket of armor that turns aside a killing blow.
  • The Riftling: a rare, elite Surtling of the Ashlands that blinks around the fight and blinks you with it.
  • Rift Core: the heart of the Riftwalker's Staff and the rift saddles. Take it from a Riftling or forge it at the Black Forge.
  • ...and a new mysterious unrest deep under the thrashing waves...

Riftwalker's Staff

Input Effect
Primary (tap) Blink forward along your line of sight. Creatures in the way are thrown aside.
Secondary (hold 5s) Plant an anchor where you aim, or if you already have one, open a rift where you aim.
Both (hold 5s) Clear the anchor, so you can plant a new one.

A rift dissolves everything in a 9×9×9 cube and sends it all to your anchor as items, at the most it could ever yield. Every ore face, every log down to the last sub-log, and every pickable are taken, along with the full contents of chests. Creatures drop double their loot and always their trophy, and bosses take a heavy hit instead. Opening a rift costs 120 Eitr and a Surtling Core. A rift that finds nothing costs nothing, and letting go early cancels it for free.

Everyone nearby sees it all: your anchor's glowing sigil stands in the world for every player, with or without a staff, and other players watch your rift's sigil grow and its pillars of light fall.

Rift Mastery. The staff grows with your Rift Magic skill and its upgrade level. A blink starts at 16 m for 8 Eitr; at full skill with a fully upgraded staff it reaches 36 m for 4 Eitr, cast about twice as fast. The staff's tooltip shows your current numbers.

Staff of the Gnarled Root

Input Effect
Primary A green bolt. Where it lands, enemies are poisoned and allies gain Regrowth, healing over time.
Secondary A lingering cloud around you that pulses the same effect.

Players and tamed creatures are healed; everything else is poisoned. Poison resistance and immunity work exactly as they do against a poison arrow.

Rift Companions

Each animal has its own saddle, made of the materials of the biome it comes from, so your mounts keep pace with how far you have travelled. A saddle's recipe appears once you have handled its materials and tamed that animal. Use one on a tamed animal that has a name, and it is bound to you across the rift:

  • It grows from its infusion with rift energy, and its eyes glow purple.
  • It gains 2.5× health, 1.75× damage, and takes 40% less damage.
  • Feed it like a player. Health food raises its health, stamina food its riding stamina and stamina regen (a lot), and Eitr food its damage and toughness.
  • The bond grows. Travelling, fighting and eating together earn it up to two stars, and each star makes it 10% faster to ride.
  • It cannot die. At zero health a pillar of light carries it home to your spawn point, where it recovers.
  • It rests at home. Staying at your spawn point, it is Rested and heals three times as fast.
  • It is yours. Only you can ride, command, feed, rename or unsaddle it. Everyone can pet it.
Saddle Station Materials Becomes
Bronzebound Workbench 2 Leather Scraps ×25, Deer Hide ×12, Bronze ×10, Surtling Core ×8 War Boar — quick and sturdy, faster than you can run
Berrybound Forge 1 Blueberries ×30, Ancient Seed ×6, Greydwarf Brute Trophy ×1, Bronze ×12 Berserker Bear — see Bears below
Silverbound Forge 2 Wolf Pelt ×12, Silver ×20, Iron ×10, Surtling Core ×12 Dire Wolf — quicker still, with a stronger jump
Rift Saddle Galdr Table 3 Yggdrasil Wood ×20, Eitr ×30, Iron ×10, Molten Core ×2 Fits anything tamed and named, modded creatures included
Spoiler: saddles for the later biomes (click to reveal)
Saddle Station Materials Becomes
Blackmetal Forge 3 Lox Pelt ×12, Black Metal ×25, Jute ×8, Surtling Core ×16 Titan Lox — keeps its own saddle, rift-shaded, and gains a jump
Flameforged Black Forge 2 Ash Hide ×20, Flametal ×15, Charred Bone ×20, Rift Core ×2 Rift Strider — as the Lox, and swift with it
Auroral Black Forge 3 Moose Hide ×15, Moose Sinew ×12, Celestial Feather ×8, Rift Core ×3 Deep North Monarch — sprints at 15 m/s and tramples what it runs over

Every saddle upgrades four levels, dearly. Each level makes the companion stronger and tougher, and its riding stamina, speed and jump better.

Bears

Bears can be tamed, but they do not stay tamed: twenty minutes after taming one, it goes wild again - unless you have bound it with a Rift Saddle by then. Its hover counts down. Bears never breed.

  • A Bjorn tames on raw fish, blueberries or Blueberry Pie, and binds with the Berrybound saddle.
  • A Vile Bear tames on Rotten Meat Pie and nothing else, and takes the universal Rift Saddle.
  • Hold its pie out (equip it like a weapon) and a bear comes to you calm, and attacks nobody. Drop the pie and it eats it - and a bear fed its pie tames twice as fast, and stays calm while it is full. Hit it, and it is in no mood for pie for a while.
  • Both pies are mixed at the Food Preparation Table and baked in the Stone Oven. They steam. Secondary attack eats one yourself.

The seal

A Rift Saddle goes straight onto a wild seal - no taming, no name. It is slow, it has its own ideas about where you are going, and its attack is a flop. It is doing its best.

Riding

Look at your companion and press E to ride, Block + E to have it follow or stay, hold E to switch its stance, Shift + E to take its saddle off, and Block + Shift + E to rename it. Throw a harpoon at your own mount and it pulls you straight into the saddle.

Every rift mount can jump; crouch to get off. Boars and wolves get riding speeds of their own:

Mount Run Sprint Jump
(you, on foot) 4 7 1×
War Boar 4.5 7.7 1.1×
Dire Wolf 4.5 8.4 1.3×

Speeds in metres per second, before the saddle's upgrades. A mount with eitr from its food shows it as a bar under its stamina while you ride.

Attack from the saddle on any rift mount, even the ones with saddles of their own. Swords, axes and fists swing, and bows, crossbows and staffs fire where you look. Your hits never land on your own mount.

Mount attacks

Secondary attack from the saddle makes your mount attack with its own bite, horns or tusks. From its first bond star the attack carries a special, paid for with 30 of your Eitr; without enough, it simply bites. Two stars make the special stronger.

Mount Special At two stars
Boar A dashing charge that bowls over whatever it hits Longer
Wolf A leaping pounce onto the first foe in its path Higher and further
Spoiler: specials of the later mounts (click to reveal)
Mount Special At two stars
Lox Its stomp becomes an earthquake that staggers everything around Wider and harder
Asksvin A Staff of Embers fireball where you aim Three at once
Moose Eikthyr's lightning, down the line of its antlers Further and wider

Your stable

  • One of each kind: one boar, one wolf, and so on.
  • One follower at a time: tell one to follow and the others go home through the rift to wait at your spawn point.
  • Never left behind: if your follower ends up more than 100 m away, for example on the other side of a portal, it is pulled through the rift to you.
  • On your map: each companion is marked with its trophy, live when it is near and where you left it when it is not.

Garden Beds

Raised beds of tilled soil, 6 × 2 m, edged with wood beams - one for each kind of 2 m beam (Wood, Wood & Iron, Darkwood, Ashwood, Stave), each made of eight of its beam. Their soil counts as cultivated ground, so you can plant seeds on any floor, up in a skybase too, and the crops grow under a roof (an admin setting, on by default).

Rift Tether

A trinket that calls your companion to your side from anywhere in the world. Putting it on is the call. Middle-click it in your inventory to choose which companion it calls. It answers only if the companion is healthy (at half health or more), and then needs 10 minutes before it can call again.

Rift Sorting Chest

A Grausten chest gone purple and gold, with a pair of rift eyes on its lid. Whatever you put in it is carried off to the chests nearby (50 m) that already hold the same thing and have room for it, nearest first. What finds no such chest waits in it and is tried again every few seconds. It only sorts into chests you could open yourself: never into carts, ships, tombstones, other sorting chests, chests someone has open, or chests under someone else's ward. Built with the Hammer, next to the Grausten chest.

Rift Aegis

A gold-touched charm with no recipe: it is for server admins to hand out (devcommands, then spawn RM_RiftAegis). Worn as a trinket, it adds +50 armor, and a blow that would kill you is turned aside: you keep the health you had. Then it needs 5 minutes before it can save you again; its status icon counts down.

Just want the chest and the Aegis? They are also on their own, client-side, as Rift Relics. Don't install both: with Rift Magic installed, Rift Relics turns itself off.

The Riftling

A Surtling the rift got into: a third bigger, dark purple, and far deadlier, with 700 health. It blinks around the fight and throws blink bolts that hurt and throw you several metres in a random direction. Rare: it spawns only in the Ashlands, one at a time. Every Riftling drops a Rift Core, along with Surtling Cores, often Eitr, and sometimes its trophy.

Installation

Install with a mod manager (Thunderstore Mod Manager, r2modman) and the requirements come with it. To install by hand, install BepInExPack Valheim and Jötunn, then put ValheimRiftMagic.dll in BepInEx/plugins.

Multiplayer: every player and the server need the mod. Gameplay settings are admin-only and synced from the server.

Configuration

Almost everything is configurable in BepInEx/config/tmana.riftmagic.cfg, including costs, ranges, damage, companion buffs, bond rates, spawn rates, and each species' riding speeds and looks; bear taming ([Rift Bears]) and garden beds ([Garden Bed]). Server admins may want to check the [Rift Harvest] section. Rifts take build pieces apart for their full cost by default (HarvestBuildPieces). Stripping other players' inventories is off by default (HarvestOtherPlayers).

With devcommands on, rift_summon [species] calls your companion of that kind to you, like the Tether without the health check or the wait.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

1.6.8

  • Dev telemetry. Servers and hosted worlds running the mod now send the author basic server info. [Telemetry] ShareServer = false turns it off.

1.6.7

  • Small tweaks.

1.6.6

  • A small tool for server admins.

1.6.5

  • Companions sent home really go home on servers. On a server they could flash with the rift's light and stay exactly where they were; now every player's game moves them home together.

1.6.4

  • Bear saddles fit. The Berserker Bear's and Vile Warbear's saddles and glowing eyes sit where they belong, and bears go by their proper names.
  • Sent home means home, for everyone. A companion sent home when you choose another follower could stay standing where it was on other players' screens. It now goes home for all.
  • An object left in the world by a mod that is no longer installed is reported once in the log, instead of filling it with the same warning every frame.

1.6.3

  • A shorter, clearer mod page. No gameplay changes.

1.6.2

  • Home is the world's spawn now, not your bed. Companions sent home, carried off by the rift when they fall, or resting at home go to where you first arrived in the world.
  • Rift Stable Beacon (Hammer, Workbench): a Dvergr wisp lamp gone rift-purple. While it stands, it is your companions' home instead. One per player - so build them a nice stable.

1.6.1

  • Everyone sees a companion the same. A rift companion's saddle fit and eyes now come from the server, like its size and riding speeds, so other players no longer see a mount at the wrong size, its saddle somewhere else, or its rider sitting beside it.
  • Saved saddle and eye settings are set back to the current defaults once, so an old config no longer shows saddles where they used to sit.

1.6.0

  • Bears can be tamed - for a while. A Bjorn eats raw fish and blueberries; a Vile Bear eats nothing but Rotten Meat Pie. A tamed bear goes wild again after 20 minutes unless you bind it with a Rift Saddle, and bears never breed. Its hover tells you how long you have.
  • Berrybound Rift Saddle (Forge): Blueberries, Ancient Seeds, a Greydwarf Brute trophy and Bronze, for the Berserker Bear. The Vile Bear takes the universal Rift Saddle.
  • Blueberry Pie and Rotten Meat Pie: mixed at the Food Preparation Table, baked in the Stone Oven, and steaming hot. Hold one out like a weapon and its bear comes to you, calm; drop it and the bear eats it, and tames twice as fast. Secondary attack eats it yourself - each is as good as the best meal of its biome.
  • The seal. A Rift Saddle goes straight onto a wild seal - no taming, no name. It is slow, it has its own ideas about where you are going, and its attack is a flop. It is doing its best.
  • Garden Beds: raised beds of tilled soil edged with wood beams, one for each kind of beam. Their soil counts as cultivated ground, so you can plant on any floor, skybases included, and crops grow in them under a roof.
  • Your mount's eitr shows as a bar under its stamina bar while you ride.
  • The Rift Saddle is cheaper: Yggdrasil Wood ×20, Eitr ×30, Iron ×10 and two Molten Cores (was Yggdrasil Wood ×30, Eitr ×40, Carapace ×20 and four Rift Cores).

1.5.0

  • Rift Sorting Chest. A purple-and-gold Grausten chest with rift eyes, built for the Grausten chest's cost plus two Molten Cores. Whatever goes in is carried off to the nearby chests that already hold the same thing.
  • Rift Aegis. An admin-only trinket (spawn RM_RiftAegis): +50 armor, and it turns aside a killing blow once every 5 minutes.
  • Bond stars make riding faster: each star adds 10% to a rift mount's run and sprint speed.
  • Both new things are also available on their own as Rift Relics.

1.4.1

  • A companion's details come first when you look at it, and your keys for it last.
  • A hungry companion tells you what feeding it does.

1.4.0

  • One target per companion. Its saddle is no longer a separate thing to aim at: look at your companion and press E to ride, Block + E to have it follow or stay, hold E to switch its stance, Shift + E to take its saddle off, and Block + Shift + E to rename it.
  • Harpoon your mount. A harpoon thrown at any of your own rift mounts pulls you straight into its saddle.
  • Saddles and glowing eyes fit every star level. A starred companion is bigger, and its saddle and eyes now grow with it instead of floating off its back or face.
  • Saddles sit still. A saddle no longer shifts or changes size when it is re-seated.
  • Saddle and eye fits refined for the boar, moose and wolf.
  • A bound Asksvin's saddle gives off rift motes again.
  • New recipes, dearer and later. The Riftwalker's Staff now takes Black Cores and Rift Cores (no Black Metal); the Rift Tether is a Mistlands trinket made at the Black Forge with Black Cores; and the Staff of the Gnarled Root is paid for in Greydwarf Eyes, Yggdrasil Wood, Sap and the Elder's trophy. Items already made are unchanged.

1.3.1

  • Saddles take four materials at most, all of them shown at the bench. Saddles no longer need their animal's trophy (taming one already unlocks its saddle), and the Rift Saddle no longer needs Linen Thread. The Bronzebound saddle had a fifth, hidden material and could not be crafted.

1.3.0

  • Your mount fights too. Secondary attack from the saddle makes your mount attack with its own bite, horns or tusks. From its first bond star it gains a special, paid for with your Eitr: the moose calls Eikthyr's lightning down its antlers, the asksvin lobs Staff of Embers fireballs, the lox shakes the earth, the boar charges and the wolf pounces. Two stars make every one of them stronger.
  • Your companions are on the map, marked with their trophy - where they are, or where you left them.
  • Rested at home. A companion staying at your spawn point heals three times as fast.
  • Level-up and saddling messages stay on screen long enough to read.
  • Some rift companions now see with more eyes than they were born with.
  • ...and what stirs beneath the thrashing waves pulls harder on the line, carries its rider high above the swell, and answers to a harpoon thrown by the one it trusts...

1.2.1

  • Fixes 1.2.0 not loading. A bad setting name stopped the whole mod from starting, so none of its items, staffs or companions appeared. Everything is back.

1.2.0

  • Followers keep a fitting distance. Big companions no longer shove into you trying to get close; each stops at a distance that suits its size.
  • A worn saddle shows its own name, not the name of the saddle it borrowed its fit from.
  • ...and a new mysterious unrest deep under the thrashing waves...

1.1.0

  • A saddle per animal. Each is made of its own biome's materials - bronze and deer hide for a boar, silver for a wolf, black metal for a lox, flametal for an asksvin, Deep North hide and celestial feathers for a moose - so mounts follow your progress through the world. Surtling Cores hold the early ones together, Rift Cores the late ones.
  • Saddles upgrade four levels, dearly. Each level makes the companion tougher and stronger and improves its riding stamina, speed and jump.
  • A saddle's recipe appears once you have handled its materials and tamed that animal.
  • The plain Rift Saddle still fits anything, and is now the dearest: Galdr Table, level 3.
  • Companions bound before this update keep working; taking their saddle off returns a Rift Saddle.

1.0.1

  • Blink reaches further and costs less: 16 m and 8 Eitr to begin with, up to 36 m for 4 Eitr at Rift Magic 100 with a fully upgraded staff (was 12 m and 20 Eitr, up to 26 m).

1.0.0

First public release.

  • Riftwalker's Staff: blink along your line of sight; plant an anchor and open rifts that deliver everything they dissolve to it. Faster, further and cheaper with Rift Magic skill and staff upgrades.
  • Staff of the Gnarled Root: poison bolts and clouds that harm foes and mend allies.
  • Rift Saddle: bind a named, tamed animal as a rift companion. Boars and wolves can be ridden, with jumps tuned per species; Lox, Asksvin and Moose keep their own saddles and grow with the rift. Fight from the saddle and trample with a Moose. Companions grow stars through a bond, and only their owner can ride them.
  • Rift Tether: a trinket that calls your chosen companion to your side, every ten minutes.
  • The Riftling: an elite Surtling of the Ashlands that blinks around and blinks you with its bolts. Drops the Rift Core.
  • Rift Core: needed for the staff, saddle and tether. Forge one from ten Surtling Cores at the Black Forge.
  • rift_summon [species] console command (devcommands).
