Feeding Trough — let your tamed animals feed themselves

A tamed wolf and a hen at a hooped feeding tub full of food

Tired of dropping carrots on the ground for your boars, only to pick them all back up the moment you walk past? Build a feeding trough, fill its 6 slots, and hungry tamed animals nearby come and eat from it on their own.

New in 1.2.2: baby animals that eat (asksvin hatchlings, and babies that other mods make eat) use the trough too. Since 1.2.0: animals eat through a wall or a fence up to 1 m thick, so a coop or a small pen can keep its trough outside.

How it works

  • Build it: hammer, Furniture tab, near a workbench. It is a small container with 6 slots, about the size of the game's wood chest but lower, so hens can reach inside.
  • Fill it: open it like a chest and put food in. The food shows on the straw, and everyone sees what is left.
  • They come and eat: a hungry tamed animal within 15 m walks to the trough, stands against its edge and eats one item, with the game's own eating animation and sounds.
  • Through a wall: an animal that cannot walk all the way to the trough, because a wall or a fence is in the way, goes as close as it can and still eats if the obstacle is at most 1 m thick. That covers wood, log and stake walls, fences, and the game's stone walls, which are exactly 1 m thick (place the trough right against them). A thicker wall, or a trough on the floor above, stays out of reach.
  • Same rules as food on the ground: one meal keeps an animal fed for about 10 minutes, and a fed animal can breed. Food lying on the ground is still eaten first.
  • Babies: in the base game, piglets, chicks, wolf cubs, lox calves and moose calves never eat: they grow up on a timer (about 50 minutes, 100 for a lox calf), fed or not, so they don't come to the trough. Asksvin hatchlings do eat: since 1.2.2 they eat from the trough too, once every 10 minutes like the adults, and so does any baby that another mod makes eat.
  • Nothing on the ground: the food stays in the trough, so walking by never picks it up.
  • Each animal eats its own food, the same as in the base game:
Animal Food
Boar Carrots, turnips, onions, mushrooms, raspberries, blueberries
Hen Seeds (carrot, turnip, onion, beech, birch), barley, dandelions
Wolf Raw meat, deer meat, lox meat, neck tails, raw fish, chicken meat, sausages
Lox Barley, cloudberries, flax

Other tameable animals, including those from the newer biomes, eat from the trough what they eat in the game.

Five models

The five troughs in game, each next to a hen, a wolf and the game's wood chest for scale

Model Size Cost
Plank feeding trough 140 × 76 cm, 44 cm high 10 wood
Hollowed log trough 145 × 58 cm, 43 cm high 6 wood, 2 core wood
Hooped feeding tub 90 cm across, 40 cm high 8 wood, 4 resin
Feed and water trough 150 × 76 cm, 44 cm high 12 wood, 2 resin
Stone feeding trough 140 × 74 cm, 42 cm high 12 stone, 2 wood

They all work the same way. The water in the feed and water trough is decorative: animals never get thirsty in Valheim.

Configuration

BepInEx/config/com.Azura.feedingtrough.cfg is created at the first launch. Each setting is described in English and in French.

Setting Default Meaning
SearchRange 15 How far (in metres) hungry animals look for a trough
FeedWildAnimals false Let wild animals eat from troughs too, which tames them over time like food on the ground
ReachThroughWalls 1 The thickest wall or fence (in metres) animals still eat through. 0 = only troughs they can walk to
LogMeals false Write every meal taken from a trough in the log (for troubleshooting)

Installation

  • Who needs it: every player and the dedicated server, as with any mod that adds building pieces.
  • With a mod manager (r2modman, Thunderstore Mod Manager): click Install. BepInExPack Valheim is installed with it.
  • By hand: install BepInExPack Valheim, then put FeedingTrough.dll in Valheim/BepInEx/plugins/.
  • Texture mods: since 1.1.1, the troughs are also added when a texture or retexture mod (Custom Textures, HD packs...) has changed the game's materials.

Tested with Valheim 1.0.20 and BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350.

    • sanglier : carottes, navets, oignons, champignons, framboises, myrtilles ;
    • poule : graines, orge, pissenlits ;
    • loup : viandes crues et poisson ;
    • lox : orge, mûres des nuages, lin ;
    • les autres animaux apprivoisables : ce qu'ils mangent dans le jeu.
  • Cinq modèles :
    • mangeoire en planches (10 bois) ;
    • auge en tronc creusé (6 bois, 2 bois de cœur) ;
    • baquet cerclé (8 bois, 4 résine) ;
    • mangeoire et abreuvoir (12 bois, 2 résine), dont l'eau est décorative car les animaux n'ont jamais soif dans Valheim ;
    • auge en pierre (12 pierres, 2 bois).
  • Réglages dans BepInEx/config/com.Azura.feedingtrough.cfg, décrits en anglais et en français :
    • SearchRange : distance de recherche, 15 m ;
    • FeedWildAnimals : laisser aussi manger les animaux sauvages, ce qui les apprivoise peu à peu ;
    • ReachThroughWalls : épaisseur des murs à travers lesquels les animaux mangent, 1 m (0 = seulement les mangeoires qu'ils peuvent atteindre) ;
    • LogMeals : noter les repas dans le journal.
  • Installation : chez tous les joueurs et sur le serveur.
  • Mods de textures : depuis la 1.1.1, les mangeoires sont aussi ajoutées quand un mod de textures (Custom Textures, packs HD...) a changé les matériaux du jeu.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

1.2.3

  • Fixed: a stone trough built on some pieces, a quarter-thick slab among them, broke at once as if it hung in the void, and kept breaking until a second slab was added under it. The game weighs a piece's support from its centre of mass, and the trough's centre sat at its very bottom, right on the face of the piece under it, where the game read no support at all. Its centre is now in the middle of the trough, as for the game's own pieces.
  • Checked on 3,024 placements (each trough on every building piece that can hold it, on one piece and on two stacked): 66 that broke now hold. Only a stone trough standing right on top of a gate, which barely held, now breaks; every other trough that held still holds.

1.2.2

  • Baby animals that eat food on the ground now eat from troughs too: asksvin hatchlings in the base game, and babies that other mods make eat. Having no hunger of their own, they eat once per meal of the adult they will become (10 minutes); the time of their last meal is saved with the world. Reported by kkrix in the mod's comments on Nexus.
  • Piglets, chicks, wolf cubs, lox calves and moose calves still don't come to the trough: in the base game they never eat, and grow up on a timer whatever you feed them. The page now says so.

1.2.1

  • Tested with Valheim 1.0.20 (15 October 2026 update): nothing needed changing. Rebuilt against the new version of the game.

1.2.0

  • Animals now eat through a wall or a fence up to 1 m thick. An animal that cannot walk all the way to a trough goes as close as it can, and still eats if what stands between them is no thicker than that: wooden, log and stake walls, fences, and the game's stone walls (1 m thick: place the trough right against them). A coop or a small pen can keep its trough outside, to be filled without walking in. Requested by KurumiOuO in the mod's comments on Nexus.
  • Before, this only happened in some layouts, depending on the path the game found, and never from a small pen.
  • New setting ReachThroughWalls: the thickest wall or fence animals still eat through, in metres (1 by default, up to 2; 0 = only troughs they can walk to).
  • Fixed: an animal could eat from a trough on the floor above it, through the floor.

1.1.2

  • Fixed: the troughs could show [laivy_auge_planks_nom] and [laivy_auge_desc] instead of their names and description. This happened when another mod had already loaded the game's translations (Drakkar Lantern 1.0.0 did) and a mod that keeps its own English copy of them was installed, as mods built with blaxxun's ItemManager do. The troughs now check the game's own translations before using their texts, whatever the other mods do.
  • The mod no longer makes the game load its translations while mods are loading. This could cause the same problem in other mods, and for players who have never chosen a language in the settings it could write an error to the log at startup.

1.1.1

  • Fixed: with some other mods installed, the troughs could disappear from the hammer menu, with "Game materials not found (plank=False, wood=False, log=False, straw=False)" in the log. This happened with Custom Textures and other texture or retexture mods, which copy the game's materials, and with mods that rework or remove the game's wooden pieces. FeedingTrough now recognises those materials even when another mod has copied, renamed or replaced them, and as a last resort uses simplified shapes and colours instead of leaving the troughs out.
  • Troughs are now always added, so a single-player or hosted world no longer deletes the troughs already built because of this (Valheim removes any saved object it no longer knows, with its contents).
  • The log message names the game pieces involved, to help with troubleshooting.

1.1.0

  • In-game texts in 35 languages: your game's own language, English otherwise (they were English or French).
  • Tested with Valheim 1.0.17.
  • Now also available on Nexus Mods.

1.0.1

  • Fixed the trough icons in the hammer menu: they took the colour of the time of day when the world was loaded (yellow, red at dusk, blue at night). They are now drawn with neutral lighting.
  • With FeedWildAnimals = true, the troughs' description says that wild animals eat there too.
  • Leftover settings from early test versions are removed from the config file.

1.0.0

  • First release.
  • Five feeding troughs to build with the hammer (Furniture tab): planks, hollowed log, hooped tub, feed and water trough, stone.
  • Each trough is a 6-slot container, and the food inside shows on its straw.
  • Hungry tamed animals within 15 m walk up to a trough and eat from it, following the same rules as food on the ground. Food on the ground is still eaten first.
  • Settings: SearchRange, FeedWildAnimals, LogMeals.
  • Texts in English, or in French when the game is set to French.
