Slot Lock — a place for everything, in your inventory and in every chest

35 languages: in-game texts follow your game's language — English · Svenska · Français · Italiano · Deutsch · Español · Русский · Română · Български · Македонски · Suomi · Dansk · Norsk · Íslenska · Türkçe · Lietuvių · Čeština · Magyar · Slovenčina · Polski · Nederlands · Português (Portugal) · Português (Brasil) · 简体中文 · 繁體中文 · 日本語 · 한국어 · हिन्दी · ไทย · Hrvatski · ქართული · Ελληνικά · Srpski · Українська · Latviešu (English otherwise).

Eggs filling the whole chest because the wolf meat ran out? Wood swallowing your last free slots on every trip? Give a slot a mode: it keeps its item, or it is reserved for one item only — or for a whole family of items.

2.1.1, important fix: items already in a chest that did not match its rule could vanish, then be lost after a sort. Fixed: please update (players and server).

New in 2.2.0: a Categories tab in the help: the seven families with their colours, what each one holds — only the items you have already discovered, so nothing from later in the game is spoiled — and how to give a slot or a whole chest to a family.

New in 2.1.0: categories (a slot for raw meat, ores, metal bars, mead bases…, each with its own frame colour), a whole chest reserved in one go (Shift+K), a search that ignores accents and ligatures, and fixes for InventorySlots and OttoStash players.

Slot Lock at a glance

The two modes

  • Mode 1, kept (cyan frame, lock "1"): the item stays in its slot. Sorting, Place stacks, quick stack and store all leave it alone, and the slot stays reserved for its item even when empty. Once it is full, extra items go to free slots as usual.
  • Mode 2, reserved (gold frame, lock "2"): the slot takes only its item. Once your mode 2 slots for an item are full, automatic transfers stop there: no more auto pickup of that item, no more middle click or vacuum of it into that chest. Exceptions: a mode 1 slot for the same item, or a stack of it you already put in a free slot.
  • Free: no rule, as in the game.

Categories (2.1.0)

A slot can wait for a whole family of items instead of one, in mode 1 or mode 2. Its frame takes the family's colour, and when empty it shows, in turn, the items of the family you already know.

Category Frame What goes in
Raw meat & fish red what the cooking stations cook into food, and the fish you catch
Dishes to bake pink what the oven bakes into food (bread dough, uncooked pies…)
Meals orange food you cook or craft
Vegetables, fruits & mushrooms green what you harvest that is eaten or cooked (berries, carrots, turnips, onions, mushrooms, honey…)
Ores brown what goes into the smelter and the blast furnace
Metal bars silver what comes out of them, and bronze
Mead bases violet what the fermenter takes

The families are read from the game itself (its cooking stations, oven, smelters, fermenter, harvests and recipes), so items added by other mods join their family too. Hover a category in the menu to see the items of it you have already discovered; the help's Categories tab lists them too. Items you have not found yet are never shown.

A whole chest (2.1.0)

Shift+K on any slot of an open chest (or the Whole chest box of the menu) reserves the whole chest for one item or one category: an ore chest, a mead base chest… Automatic transfers bring it only that, other items are refused even by hand (those already inside stay in their slots and can be taken out), and the chest accepts its items even when empty (OttoStash's middle click and vacuum find it). Slots you set one by one keep their own rule. Its slots get a paler frame of the rule's colour; remove the rule from the same menu.

What the slots look like

What the slots look like. Top: real slots from a player's inventory, zoomed (mode 1 kept, holding its item or waiting for it under chains; mode 2 reserved, the same). Bottom: a mock-up of 2.1.0's category slots and of a whole chest reserved for ores.

How to use it

  • Open your inventory (or a chest), hover a slot and press K (configurable): free, mode 1, mode 2, then free again.
  • On an empty free slot, K opens the menu of known items: categories first, then your items. Search (accents and ligatures don't matter, several words in any order), then left click for mode 1, right click for mode 2.
  • Shift+K on a chest slot: the same menu, for the whole chest.
  • An empty reserved slot shows the item it waits for as a ghost, under the chains and the lock of the mod's icon. An item's tooltip says the rule of its slot.

The pictures are from a French game; what they say is translated below each one. They were taken with 2.0.0: the menu now also starts with a row of categories.

The menu of known items

The menu of known items — press K on an empty free slot. Title Réserver cette case: "Reserve this slot". Clic gauche : mode 1 — gardée…: "Left click: mode 1 — kept, extra ones go elsewhere"; Clic droit : mode 2 — réservée…: "Right click: mode 2 — reserved, nothing beyond once full". Chercher un objet: "Search an item"; Objets connus · 542: "Known items · 542", every item your character has found. Behind the menu, your inventory: cyan frames are kept slots (mode 1), gold frames reserved slots (mode 2), each with a numbered lock; an empty reserved slot shows its item as a ghost, under chains.

Animated help

The glowing ? Help button, just above your inventory's top-left corner, opens a help window in your game's language:

  • The modes: three animated cards (free, mode 1, mode 2) and the filling order.
  • Categories (2.2.0): the seven families and their colours, what each holds (only what you have already discovered; a long list scrolls in its box), a slot or a whole chest for a family, and which slots fill first.
  • Simulator: a small bag, two chests and loot on the ground, run by the mod's real rules. Change a slot with K, press Place stacks, Take all or auto pickup, click the loot: items fly where the game would put them, a log says why. Nothing touches your real items.
  • Situations: six cases replayed step by step (copper and its kept slot, flint with a quota, wood at pickup, resin that stays put, a chest shared by everyone, chests pulling loot).
  • Keys, and a tooltip on every slot and button.

Everything that only exists with OttoStash is marked in purple. The button glows until you open the help once; HelpButton = false hides it.

Help, Simulator tab

Help › Simulator — your bag (Ton sac), two chests (Entrepôt: storehouse, Atelier: workshop) and loot on the ground (Au sol, près de toi: "On the ground, near you"), all run by the mod's real rules. Here Objets similaires ("Place stacks") was pressed on the storehouse: the copper ore went into its kept slot, the stone and the tin onto their stacks, and the log (Ce qui vient de se passer: "What just happened") says where each item went and why. Legend: Mode 1 · case gardée (kept slot), Mode 2 · case réservée (reserved slot), Objet attendu (expected item), Arrivée (arrival), Refusé (refused). The panel on the right (Comment s'en servir: "How to use it") explains it in four steps. Buttons marked OttoStash, in purple, only exist in game if you have it. Nothing here touches your real items.

Help, Situations tab

Help › Situations — six cases replayed step by step: Le cuivre et sa place gardée (copper and its kept place), Le silex en quota (flint with a quota), Le bois limité au ramassage (wood limited at pickup), La résine qui ne bouge pas (resin that stays put), Un coffre réglé pour tous (a chest set up for everyone) and L'aspiration des coffres (chests pulling in loot, with OttoStash). Voir ("Show") plays one in the simulator.

A situation, step by step

A situation, step by step — La résine qui ne bouge pas (resin that stays put), step 2 of 3: Place stacks toward the storehouse sends the free stack of resin away, while the resin in its kept slot stays in your bag (last line of the log: "stays in place — its slot is set"). Précédente, Étape suivante, Quitter la situation: "Previous", "Next step", "Leave the situation".

Where items go

When an item comes in (auto pickup, Place stacks, OttoStash's middle click or vacuum, InventorySlots' quick stack), it fills:

  1. its own slots: mode 2, then mode 1,
  2. then the slots of its category: mode 2, then mode 1,
  3. then free slots, when allowed: in a chest, only if the chest has a mode 1 slot for it or already holds it in a free slot; in your inventory, unless it has mode 2 slots and nowhere else to go.

A chest with a slot reserved for an item accepts that item even when it holds none of it. A slot reserved for another item is never taken, not even by hand: dropping another item there is refused. Your own moves (drag, shift click, take all, crafting) can always use free slots.

Chests are shared

A chest's slot modes are saved in the world, so every player sees and follows the same rules. Install the mod on every player and on the server.

Works with

  • OttoStash (optional: SlotLock works on its own with the game's Place stacks, Take all and auto pickup): OttoStash adds storing into every nearby chest at once (store key, middle click) and chests pulling in loot. A slot of your inventory in mode 1 or 2 is also an OttoStash favorite slot, so its store leaves it alone; its middle click and vacuum follow the chest's modes. Its "Slot is favorited" tooltip line no longer shows on chest items, and on a set slot of your bag, SlotLock's line in your language replaces it.
  • InventorySlots: its sort (your inventory and chests) leaves set slots in place and puts each reserved item back in its slot; its quick stack fills chests in the same order; with its hotbar switch (key under Esc), slot rules move with the rows.

Coming from 1.x

Your locked slots become mode 1 slots, with the same reserved items. To give a slot another item, use K or the menu: dropping another item into a reserved slot is now refused.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

2.5.0

  • New category: Idols (lime green frame): the Battle and Protection idols found in chests and ruins. A slot, or a whole chest, can now wait for them. Like the other families, it is read from the game itself (what recipes ask for as a refining resource), so idols added by other mods join it too.
  • Each item still belongs to one family only; the idols come right after the trophies.
  • Help: the Categories tab now shows the thirteen families in two columns.
  • Tested and certified compatible with Valheim 1.0.21 (28 October 2026 update): nothing needed changing. Rebuilt against the new version of the game.

2.4.0

  • Three new categories: Rocks & minerals (slate grey frame: stone, flint and the other rocks you mine or pick up), Hides & leather (tan frame: deer hide, leather scraps and the other hides and pelts that beasts leave behind) and Trophies (turquoise frame). A slot, or a whole chest, can now wait for any of them. They are read from the game too (the rocks its stone pieces are built of, what creatures drop, the trophy item type), so the rocks, hides and trophies of other mods join them.
  • Each item still belongs to one family only: wood first, then ores, metal bars, rocks, hides, trophies, raw meat, dishes, mead bases, meals and vegetables.
  • Help: the Categories tab now shows the twelve families as tiles in two columns, with the rule of the chosen family next to its name.

2.3.0

  • Two new categories for wood, read from what chopped trunks give: Common wood (fir green frame: wood and core wood, which fill a chest in no time) and Rare wood (royal blue frame: every other kind). A slot, or a whole chest, can now wait for either. Seeds, cones and resin are not part of them. The wood of other mods' trees joins the rare kinds, and only the kinds you have already found are shown.
  • Help: the Categories tab now lists nine families, in tighter rows (same text size).

2.2.0

  • Help: a new Categories tab, in 35 languages. The seven families with their colours and what goes in each; what a family holds, limited to the items you have already discovered (the list grows as you progress, nothing from later in the game is revealed); how to give a slot or a whole chest to a family, which slots fill first, and what the K menu shows. A long family scrolls inside its own box (mouse wheel or scroll bar): nothing else on the page moves.
  • No more spoilers: hovering a category in the K menu now names only items you have already discovered, without the total count; an empty category slot only cycles through the items of its family you know (just its frame and chains if you know none yet).

2.1.1

  • Important fix, please update (items could be lost). When the game loaded a chest, or your bag, items lying in a slot whose rule asks for something else were left out, so they looked gone. The next change to that chest (a sort, an item taken or stored) then saved it without them, and they were lost for good. It happened above all with a chest reserved as a whole for one item or category while it still held other things. Nothing is left out any more: such items stay in their slot, visible, and can be taken out; the rule only keeps new ones out. Items that 2.1.0 hid but that were not saved over yet come back when the chest is opened again.
  • Dropping an item by hand onto a slot reserved for another item is still refused, and the item stays where it was.

2.1.0

  • Categories: a slot can wait for a whole family of items instead of one, in mode 1 or mode 2: raw meat & fish, dishes to bake, meals, vegetables, fruits & mushrooms, ores, metal bars, mead bases. The families are read from the game itself (cooking stations, oven, smelters, fermenter, harvests, recipes), so other mods' items join them too. Each family has its own frame colour, and an empty category slot shows its items in turn.
  • Whole chest: Shift+K on any slot of an open chest (or the « Whole chest » box of the menu) reserves the whole chest for one item or one category. Other items are refused, even by hand; slots with their own rule keep it. The rule is removed from the same menu. New setting WholeChestKey.
  • Items fill their own slots first (mode 2, then mode 1), then the slots of their category (mode 2, then mode 1), then free slots when allowed.
  • The menu of known items starts with the categories; its search ignores accents and ligatures (« oeuf » finds « Œuf ») and takes several words in any order.
  • An item's tooltip says the rule of its slot, in your language.
  • Fix: K on a chest slot could open the menu for a hidden slot of InventorySlots' larger inventory, lying under the chest. K now acts on the slot really under the mouse.
  • Fix: with InventorySlots' hotbar switch (key under Esc), slot rules now move with the rows; a lock no longer stays behind on an empty slot that refused everything.
  • Fix: the « ? Help » button could turn back into « Take all » after a language or keyboard/controller change. It keeps its label, and now sits just above the inventory's top-left corner, where it no longer covers InventorySlots' equipment panel.
  • OttoStash: its « Slot is favorited and will not be stored » tooltip line no longer shows on chest items; on a set slot of your bag, SlotLock's own line replaces it.
  • Now also available on Nexus Mods.

2.0.0

  • Two slot modes, in your inventory and in every chest: mode 1 (kept: the item stays in its slot, extra ones go to free slots) and mode 2 (reserved: only that item, and nothing more by automatic transfers once its mode 2 slots are full).
  • Chests: slot modes are saved in the world and shared by every player. Install the mod on the server too.
  • Items fill their mode 2 slots, then their mode 1 slots, then free slots when allowed, for auto pickup, Place stacks, OttoStash's middle click and vacuum, and InventorySlots' quick stack. A chest with a slot reserved for an item accepts it even when it holds none.
  • Menu of known items: K on an empty free slot, with search; left click for mode 1, right click for mode 2.
  • New look: cyan and gold frames, numbered locks, the expected item as a ghost in an empty reserved slot, and a new icon.
  • Your 1.x locked slots become mode 1 slots. Dropping another item into a reserved slot is now refused: use K or the menu to change it.
  • InventorySlots' chest sort keeps set slots in place too.
  • Animated help, from the glowing « ? Help » button of the inventory, in 35 languages: the modes, a simulator (a bag, two chests and loot on the ground, run by the mod's real rules without touching your items), six step-by-step situations and the keys. What only exists with OttoStash is marked.
  • New settings ContainerSlots, HelpButton, Mode1Color, Mode2Color and GhostOpacity (FrameColor is replaced); every setting is described in English and in French.

1.1.1

  • Tested with Valheim 1.0.20 (15 October 2026 update): nothing needed changing. Rebuilt against the new version of the game.

1.1.0

  • Messages in 35 languages: your game's own language, English otherwise (they were English or French).
  • Tested with Valheim 1.0.17.

1.0.1

  • InventorySlots: its sort button (S) no longer moves locked items nor puts other items in locked slots; it puts each reserved item back into its locked slot. Its quick stack, store all and take all skip locked slots too.
  • A locked slot only changes its reserved item when you drop another item into it by hand (a sort or another mod moving items no longer changes it).

1.0.0

  • First release: locked inventory slots (K on the hovered slot), skipped by Place stacks, transfers and OttoStash's store, reserved for their item when empty.
