README

Cano.Fixedheim

Valheim's new build menu is lacking alot of functionality. So I made this mod to solve some of its issues, as well as other things I wanted without having to add a bunch of mods. So I made this mainly for myself but sharing it so others wanting a similar solution can have one.

Requirements

  • Valheim 1.0+
  • BepInExPack Valheim-5.4.2351
  • Any Config Manager

No additional mod dependencies are required.

Installation

Thunderstore Mod Manager / r2modman

  1. Install Cano.Fixedheim through Thunderstore Mod Manager, r2modman, or another compatible Thunderstore client.
  2. Make sure BepInExPack Valheim is installed.
  3. Launch Valheim through the mod manager.
  4. The mod will generate its configuration file automatically on first launch.

Manual installation

  1. Install BepInExPack Valheim and make sure BepInEx is working correctly.

  2. Download the Cano.Fixedheim release.

  3. Extract the mod archive.

  4. Place the mod DLL in:

    Valheim/BepInEx/plugins/Cano.Fixedheim/

  5. Launch Valheim.

The final structure should look similar to:

Valheim/
└── BepInEx/
    └── plugins/
        └── Cano.Fixedheim/
            └── Cano.Fixedheim.dll

Config

The configuration file is generated by BepInEx after the first launch.

All settings are grouped into sections:

Sections
General: This houses the Simple Sorting, Mouse QoL, Build QoL & Debug master on/off toggles.

2. Mouse QoL: Single item pickup, scroll to adjust quantity, scroll to pickup & middle click to split stacks.
2a. Mouse QoL - Drag to Distribute: Holding a modifier key you can drag items across slots to evenly distribute.
3a. Build QoL - Repair: Shortcut to the repair hammer & area repair with modifer key.

3c. Build QoL - Damage Look: Place build pieces in their various broken/damaged states.

3e. Build QoL - Boat & Cart Removal: Ability to deconstruct the boats & carts like any build piece.
3f. Build QoL - Favourite Lists: Double click to rename lists & easier deletion.
3g. Build QoL - Ghost Piece Cycling: Cycle through all the build pieces without opening the build menu.
3h. Build QoL - Ghost Cycling List Pin: Pin any list in the menu to cycle through instead of the whole list.

3k. Build QoL - Piece Icon Size: Change the build menu piece icons to a larger or smaller size.

Features

Simple Sorting

  • Sort your inventory with a configurable shortcut.
  • Sort an open chest with a separate configurable shortcut.
  • Partial stacks of the same item are merged.
  • The hotbar row is never moved.
  • Sorting can be ordered by:
    • Alphabetical
    • Weight
    • Category
  • Shortcuts only activate when their exact modifier combination is held.
  • Shortcuts can be cleared in the configuration to disable them.

Default shortcuts

  • R — sort inventory
  • Shift + R — sort chest

Mouse QoL

Adds more precise ways to interact with item stacks without replacing Valheim's normal right-click behaviour.

  • Single item pickup: Hold Single Item Modifier Key and right-click a stack to pick up one item at a time.
    • Ctrl on Windows/Linux
    • Cmd on macOS
  • Scroll to adjust: Use the mouse wheel over a stack to pick up one item or adjust the amount being carried.
  • Cancel with the wheel: Scroll down to zero while carrying a stack to cancel the pickup.
  • Middle-click: Pick up half of a stack.
  • Drag to distribute: Hold the distribution modifier, click an empty slot, and drag across additional empty slots to distribute the carried stack evenly.

Plain right-click remains Valheim's normal behaviour.

Build QoL

Repair Tools

  • V selects the Repair tool.
  • Shift + V repairs every damaged piece within the configured Area Repair Radius.

Weather Damage

Control environmental damage to constructed pieces:

  • Rain damage — enabled by default
  • Snow damage
  • Ash damage
  • Lava damage

Each can be configured independently.

Damage Look Cycling

Cycle a building ghost through different condition states before placing it.

  • Ctrl + Alt + Mouse Wheel
  • Cmd + Option + Mouse Wheel on macOS

Available states:

  • New — 100% health
  • Worn — 50% health
  • Broken — 15% health

The setting Keep Damage Look Between Pieces controls whether the selected condition is retained between pieces.

Build Menu Scrolling

Navigate build-menu elements with the mouse wheel:

  • Scroll over tabs to switch tabs.
  • Shift + Mouse Wheel over tags or pieces to move through them.
  • Optionally close the menu when the mouse is moved off the build menu and modifier key is released.

Boat & Cart Removal

The hammer's Remove function can be used to deconstruct boats & Carts.

A boat & Cart cannot be removed while:

  • Someone is aboard.
  • Cargo remains inside.

Removal confirmation & cargo inside check can be disabled/enabled if preferred.

Favourite Lists

Improve custom build-list management:

  • Double-click a custom list to rename it.
  • Use the delete/trash icon to remove a list.
  • Long list names can be scrolled.

Valheim's normal middle click to delete remains unaltered.

Ghost Piece Cycling

With the build menu closed:

  • Hold Alt and use the mouse wheel to cycle through build pieces.

List Pinning

  • Alt + Click a list button to pin it.
  • Ghost-piece cycling can then be restricted to that list.
  • Pinned-list persistence can be enabled.

Highlight Cycling

When using the Repair tool:

  • Hold Q and use the mouse wheel to move the highlight between touching or clipped-in pieces.
  • Repair and Remove actions operate on the currently highlighted piece.

Build Smoke

Optionally hide the dust/smoke effects generated when:

  • Building
  • Terraforming
  • Repairing

This feature is disabled by default.

Piece Icon Size

Piece Icon Size scales the build-menu piece icons from 50% to 200%.

  • Default: 100% — vanilla size
  • Affects the piece grid and spacing.
  • Also scales the small upgrade-arrow and favourite-star indicators.
  • Applies to the hammer, hoe, cultivator, and serving tray build menus.
  • Does not change the Repair / Remove buttons, tabs, or tag lists.

Performance

Fixedheim installs its game hooks only when the corresponding features are enabled.

When features are disabled, their associated hooks are removed. With all features disabled, the mod adds very little overhead.

With the default configuration, the primary per-piece operation is the rain-damage hook, which uses cached values.

Credits

The inventory sorter is based on dsoltyka/ValheimSortContainers (MIT).

The Mouse QoL & Build QoL functionality originally started from the same general idea used in my personal mod Cano.SortsitOut.

CHANGELOG

Cano.Fixedheim 3.4.0

Title Notes
Hammer stays off item stands: Pressing the hammer's hotbar number while looking at an item stand or armour stand no longer puts the hammer on it, blocking the dreded accidental placement - the hotbar key just equips the hammer, like its normal behaviour. Hold the Stand Modifier Key with the number to place it on the stand the vanilla way. Only the Build hammer is affected by this; the hoe and cultivator are not affected.
New settings: (new section 3l. Build QoL - Item Stands):
Block Hammer On Stands (on).
Stand Modifier Key (LeftShift): hold it before hitting the hotbar number to place the hammer on a stand normally. None = never.
Confirmation colour: Every confirmation popup (boat / cart deconstruct and the favourite-list rename box) now uses the game's own dialogue colour instead of white.
Every part can be switched on/off: Made sure everything in the subsections has reasonable on/off switches, all parts that were on still stay on by default, and everything previously off stays off. You just have the option to turn on/off individual settings with finer control now. on/off previously missing now added for the following parts:
1. Simple Sorting: Enable Sort Inventory, Enable Sort Chest.
3a. Repair: Enable Repair Hammer Shortcut, Enable Area Repair (previously one switch for both).
3d. Menu Scrolling: Enable Tab Scrolling, Enable Tag And Piece Scrolling.
3i. Highlight Cycling: Enable Wheel Cycling (the optional Next / Previous keys keep working without it).
3k. Piece Icon Size: Enable Piece Icon Size.

Note: I bumped up the audio feedback of the boat and cart deconstruction by 30% however unity caps audio files if they were already at their max file volume. Since I want to keep the mod clean of external files; so for now this is the best solution I could think of without layering the audio clips (which doesn't always sound great) or adding the audio clips back as external files with raised file volume. If I find a better solution for this I'll implement it in the next update, if not this is the current limitation for keeping the mod lean and clean.

Title Notes
Cart deconstruct: the hammer's Remove can now deconstruct carts, like boats. It is blocked while the cart is hitched or open.
New settings: (section 3e. Build QoL - Boat & Cart Removal):
Enable Cart Removal (on) and Cart Confirmation Notice (on).
Cart Removal While Loaded (off): deconstruct a cart that still holds cargo. The cargo drops on the ground.
Boat Removal While Loaded (off): the same for boats.
Audio Feedback: Deconstructing a boat or cart plays the piece's own hit effect, so it sounds like breaking it with damage.
Piece scrolling starts at the mouse: Shift + wheel over the build pieces now starts from the piece under the pointer instead of jumping to the first piece, then keeps stepping until you move the mouse to a different piece. With the pointer between pieces it steps from the selected piece as before.

Note: section 3e was renamed from "Boat Removal" and the boat confirmation entry from Confirmation Notice to Boat Confirmation Notice, so the boat settings in 3e go back to their defaults after the update once. Sorry about the inconvenience.
