README

Better GrapplingHook

Removes the Grappling Hook's stamina cost, cuts its reload to near-instant, and gives it 50% more rope.

The problem

The Grappling Hook arrived with Valheim 1.0, and two things about it get in the way.

The reload is slower than it looks. Valheim splits the delay into two separate fields: a 1.1 second window where the reload cannot even be queued, followed by a 2 second reload. Add the 0.2 seconds the game keeps reserved while you are still attached, and a single shot locks you out for roughly 3.3 seconds. That is a long time when you fired the hook to get away from something.

Most weapons shorten their reload as the matching skill goes up — the game halves it at full skill. The Grappling Hook is registered with no skill type at all, so that halving never applies. It is 3.3 seconds at hour one and 3.3 seconds at hour three hundred.

It costs 15 stamina per shot, on a tool you reach for precisely when stamina is the thing you are short of.

The rope snaps early. 60 units while it pulls you in, 70 while you hang.

What this mod does

Vanilla With this mod
Stamina per shot 15 0
Reload 2s, after 1.1s of block time 0.1s, no block time
Rope length 60 pulling / 70 hanging 90 pulling / 105 hanging

Nothing else about the hook changes. It still pulls at the same speed, still needs the same materials, and still breaks on the same conditions.

Configuration

Settings live in BepInEx/config/carrome.bettergrapplinghook.cfg, created on first launch.

Setting Default Effect
Stamina / StaminaCost 0 Stamina spent per shot. Set to 15 for vanilla.
Reload / ReloadTime 0.1 Reload duration in seconds. The 1.1s block window is always removed.
Rope / RopeLengthMultiplier 1.5 Scales how far the rope stretches before it snaps. 1 is vanilla.

Every value is adjustable, so you can soften any single change without removing the mod.

A note on reloading while running

Valheim clears your whole pending-action queue every frame you run, which is why a reload never finishes while sprinting — that is vanilla behaviour for every reloadable weapon, not something specific to the hook. This mod does not change it. With the reload at 0.1 seconds the point is close to moot: the reload completes in a single step, so in practice you are loaded again before you notice.

Multiplayer

This is client-side. It changes the item values your own game loads, so every player who wants the effect needs the mod installed, and the server does not need it.

Manual installation

Drop BetterGrapplingHook.dll into Valheim/BepInEx/plugins/. Requires BepInEx.

Compatibility

Built and tested against Valheim 1.0.7 with BepInEx 5.4.2350.

The mod reads the hook's real values at startup and scales from those rather than hardcoding them, so a game patch that retunes the hook will be picked up instead of overwritten. If a future update renames the item prefab, the mod logs a warning and changes nothing.
