README

Runic Crafting 2.2.1

Craft using carried supplies and accessible nearby chests while other players use those same chests. Materials are reserved by the shared server inventory authority; crafting no longer requests a writable chest ownership handoff.

Using nearby materials

  • Craft and upgrade through the normal crafting menu. Carried ingredients take priority. Nearby ingredients are requested during the normal craft animation; output waits for both the animation and the server's reservation. If you cancel or change the menu or recipe, the reservation is delivered as materials instead.
  • One hammer click resumes placement when nearby materials arrive, including with a full backpack. Aim, snapping, and rotation remain live while the request completes; Valheim validates the current preview when placing. Changing the selected piece or tool, leaving building mode, or pressing Escape/controller B cancels the pending action. Reserved materials remain reusable in the current session and return to your backpack when you leave building mode and space is available.
  • Supported manual cooking/refueling and confirmed Runic Agriculture batches resume automatically. Native requirements, range, terrain, stamina, tool and access checks still apply. Reconnecting can recover reserved materials included in an ordinary character save, but does not replay an old world action.
  • Material counts are previews. Another player or production station can consume available stock before your request reaches the server.
  • Repair All, workshop permissions, station HUD, and area repair remain available. The default area-repair shortcut is semicolon.

Settings are in BepInEx/config/chazman.RunicCrafting.cfg. [Materials] RangeCapMeters defaults to 20m; stationless building and manual interactions have their own bounds. Required stations, access checks, and ordinary crafting requirements still apply.

Workshop access

Use runiccrafting_access show at a station. Its creator can set station <policy> and materials <policy>, approve/unapprove player IDs, and assign a group. Policies include everyone, approved, owner, nobody, ward, ward.exceptions, and group. Group checks require the optional Runic Portals integration. Normal Runic inventory actions, crafting, and building do not force a character save or disk-sync checkpoint. Ordinary game saves, autosaves, and their indicators keep their normal behavior. Pending receipts remain in memory and are included in ordinary character saves. A crash before the next character save can lose or duplicate recent transfers; an OS crash or power loss can also lose or reorder recent buffered server writes. Server confirmation, permissions, inventory revisions, and live request deduplication still apply.

Live world compatibility

Runic uses the current inventory on the chest's native owner as its source of truth. Chest dimensions, effective stack limits, and serialized item data come from the installed game and mods. A Runic action applies its own item or rule changes through the native inventory methods. Ordinary chest edits are no longer copied back from an independent Runic inventory ledger.

Runic Storage can display standard Container chests with their current modded dimensions. Looking inside does not wait for a transfer request. Actual shared transfers still need a network reply; this change cannot remove network latency. Runic Crafting and Runic Production do not replace ordinary chest opening when used without Storage.

Installed mods can still disagree about the same action. Mods that bypass native inventory methods, use private inventories, or alter networking may need specific integration. Compatibility with every mod or configuration is not implied. Wards, configured access rules, item protections, and available capacity still apply.

Multiplayer and upgrading

Each Runic module is independently installable; none requires another Runic module. The matching chosen modules must still be installed on the dedicated server and participating clients. This version does not restore client-only operation against an unmodded server.

Back up the world, characters, configurations, and RunicOperations folder together before upgrading. Current chest contents remain native world data. Existing links, rules, pending receipts, and undelivered legacy output are retained for recovery; do not delete the old RunicOperations folder. Old stored chest quantities and station fuel/timers are not projected over live game state. Roll back using the complete matching backup, rather than mixing old DLLs with newer saved receipts.

Normal inventory actions do not force character saves or disk-sync checkpoints. Ordinary saves persist character receipts and native world contents. Unsaved changes can still be lost or repeated after a crash. Character receipt versions 2–4 remain readable, and version 4 is written; journal versions 1–2 are readable, and version 2 is written. Older releases cannot read the new journal format.

Supported native containers keep their normal destruction and contents-drop behavior. Runic's buffered production output is also released when its station is destroyed. Saved pending deliveries resume in their original world and wait for inventory space when needed.

Language and support

Keep the Translations folder beside the DLL. Missing translations fall back to English.

Runic Mods Discord · Support My Work Thanks to Megamos, Aedis, and Phoenixf for their crafting/building performance feedback.

Extended stack compatibility

Legal stacks larger than 65,535 items are supported when the installed stack mod preserves those quantities through Valheim's item serializer. ItemStacksItemWeights' extended stack metadata is honored. Configured stack limits still apply. Extended stacks do not require a companion Runic module or per-action saves. See the upgrading section for receipt and journal formats.

Runic reads the actual live chest shape, including expanded or resized standard inventories.

CHANGELOG

2.2.1

  • Remove durability from Runic material-change, inventory snapshot, sorting, stacking and drawer eligibility checks. Worn items no longer block unrelated transfers or nearby material use.
  • Remove the snapshot durability correction routine. Item wear and repair continue to use the game's normal behavior.

2.2.0

  • Place immediately using nearby chest materials when this client is already their native owner. Keep exact native material consumption and ordinary synchronization; do not request a round trip or ownership handoff for a locally owned chest. Remote-owned sources retain the existing reservation path.

  • Remove the unnecessary slow retry when nearby building, crafting or refueling materials are waiting for a fresh chest snapshot. Preserve existing item accounting and unavailable-owner backoff.

  • Honor native/modded building-station coverage, including Build Camera, when reserving nearby materials. Keep server material-range, chest access and station permission checks; ordinary crafting and manual-use range checks are unchanged.

  • Keep shared native chest deltas tied to their planned slots instead of consuming another matching stack.

  • Prevent a second material charge from overlapping consumption hooks when Runic has already paid the exact craft or build cost. Actions without a Runic lease retain the ordinary modded consumption path.

  • Preserve Valharvest's installed empty-bottle return callback for Runic-paid ingredients; Valharvest remains optional.

  • Let completed deliveries wait in character data without blocking deposits when the backpack is full; resume as space becomes available, using ordinary character saves.

  • Use the native owner's current chest inventory, dimensions, stack limits, and serialized item data as transaction input.

  • Apply only each requested item or rule change; stop projecting a separate inventory ledger over ordinary chest edits.

  • Preserve unrelated edits, modded item metadata, and native chest destruction behavior.

  • Retain legacy recovery data while moving active inventories to native world persistence. Read journal versions 1–2 and write version 2; use a complete matching backup to roll back.

  • Keep each Runic module independently installable. Matching server and client modules are still required; no companion Runic dependency is added.

  • Reserve nearby ingredients from current native inventories without replacing other mods' chest state.

2.1.3

  • Honor legal stacks above 65,535 when a stack mod extends Valheim's native item serialization, including ItemStacksItemWeights.
  • Remove the old 16-bit cap from shared inventory loading and transfer capacity, while checking that the installed serializer preserves extended counts.
  • Allow saved pending deliveries affected by that cap to resume without deleting receipts or resetting the world.
  • No new dependencies, save format changes, or per-action character saves.

2.1.2

  • Fixed removed occupied chests being replaced by another recovery chest, including repeating unsupported chest collapses.
  • Recovered chest and enrolled production contents now drop as ordinary ground items; old recovery chests do not refund construction materials.
  • Preserved item metadata and large drawer quantities through bounded, restart-resumable recovery.
  • Shared fix included independently in this mod; no new mod dependencies or per-action saves.

2.1.1

  • Remove dismantled managed objects immediately instead of keeping their world records alive while inventory retirement waits; retain inventory data for background salvage.

  • Prevent repeated destruction callbacks from issuing the same managed piece's building-material refund again.

  • Fix initial chest enrollment waiting indefinitely when a remote owner has unloaded the chest, its ownership changes, or its inventory exceeds the old 64 KB capture limit.

  • Give fresh owner capture one bounded 250 ms window, then use the replicated native contents. Existing enrolled chests do not wait for this step.

  • Recover unfinished owner-side enrollment markers from earlier releases; keep existing published ledger identities intact.

  • Compress initial owner snapshots and accept inventories up to the existing 1 MiB codec limit. Late capture replies cannot replace enrolled contents.

  • Preserve independent installation and ordinary autosaves. No new mod dependencies or per-action character saves.

2.1.0

  • Remove mandatory Runic-to-Runic dependencies. Storage, Crafting, and Production each include their own shared runtime and work independently with BepInEx.
  • Preserve native and third-party chest deposits and withdrawals when a chest also participates in Runic automation.
  • Merge native item changes with current chest contents, including item metadata and expanded rows, instead of replacing them with an older snapshot.
  • Keep pending native changes visible and retry the same request if the network queue is full.
  • Limit Storage chest controls to views opened through Storage; disabled Storage and native/third-party views retain normal interaction.
  • Separate Runic viewer presence from vanilla's chest-in-use lock.
  • Retain the one-click nearby building fix and ordinary-save behavior: no per-action character saves or forced disk synchronization.
  • Preserve existing configuration and chest-ledger data. Keep matching server/client builds for whichever modules you choose to install.

2.0.9

  • Fix nearby building requiring a second click after materials arrive.
  • Preserve the pending click when inventory updates rebuild the placement preview, including when the mouse has not moved.
  • Keep one pending placement through normal aim, snapping, and rotation changes; use the current preview and native placement validation.
  • Remove the extra pre-reservation ghost refresh and the 15 cm/one-degree cancellation threshold.
  • Preserve explicit cancellation, native material consumption, and one placement per pending click.
  • Retain 2.0.8's ordinary-save behavior without per-action character checkpoints.
  • Require Runic Storage 2.0.8. Install matching Crafting 2.0.9 on participating clients and server; Production remains 2.0.8.

2.0.8

  • Retry a delivery blocked by a full backpack after 100 ms, so freeing a slot does not impose the previous two-second wait.

  • Remove mandatory per-action character checkpoints from nearby crafting, building, and other shared material operations.

  • Keep native crafting-animation timing, cancellation, current requirements, and server material authorization.

  • Use buffered server inventory writes instead of forced disk synchronization for every operation.

  • Preserve ordinary game saves and autosaves. Recent transfers no longer carry a per-operation crash-persistence guarantee.

  • Require Runic Storage 2.0.8 and matching installed Runic module builds.

Earlier entries below describe their historical release behavior. Their per-operation saving guarantees were changed in 2.0.8.

2.0.7

  • Request nearby crafting materials during the native craft animation. Output still waits for the animation and authority result; cancellation, recipe changes, and reconnects recover the reserved materials without crafting unexpectedly.
  • Prioritize manual material transactions ahead of queued background production, while preserving bounded automation progress.
  • Reuse an already verified Runic-only checkpoint for Character Vault 1.0.3 queued uploads instead of performing a redundant third full save.
  • Include the shared receipt update that preserves the original inventory slots of returned offered items when available, including interrupted-transfer recovery.
  • Continue reading existing character receipt versions 2 and 3 while writing version 4 for new slot-aware receipts.
  • Require Runic Storage 2.0.7 and matching installed Runic module builds.

2.0.6

  • Keep Runic-origin queued Character Vault 1.0.3 follow-up saves quiet, while preserving ordinary and disconnect save indicators.
  • Keep nearby crafting and building transaction checkpoints from triggering the native floppy-disk notification.
  • Retain verified character saves, replay protection, and interrupted-delivery recovery; ordinary save notifications remain available.
  • Require Runic Storage 2.0.6.

2.0.5

  • Reduce successful nearby crafting from four Runic character saves to two, avoiding redundant intermediate saves and their extra cloud-upload work.
  • Preserve a processed-delivery checkpoint when remaining materials cannot fit, and retry failed saves without crafting twice.
  • Avoid material-settings errors before the client world is initialized or after it is destroyed.
  • Require Runic Storage 2.0.5.

2.0.4

  • Resolve upgraded crafting-station range from authoritative station-extension records, including upgrades not instantiated on the dedicated server.
  • Match native horizontal station coverage for building and honor configured candidate limits up to 256.
  • Share server material-search limits with client previews for the current session without changing saved client configuration.
  • Capture the refreshed native building target and retain the pending click across tool cooldown and UI gates; consume it once at placement, and cancel changed targets or denied attempts safely.
  • Include shared server queue scheduling improvements; require Runic Storage 2.0.4.

2.0.3

  • Reserve request capacity for manual inventory operations so background production cannot occupy every ordinary request slot.
  • Preserve pending character transactions and their original IDs during congestion.
  • Require matching Runic Storage 2.0.3 on clients and server.

2.0.2

  • Fix nearby crafting and material requests from remote players by resolving identity from the connected player's owned character ZDO.
  • Preserve the automatic building, cooking/refueling and saved material reservation behavior introduced in 2.0.1.
  • Require matching Runic Storage 2.0.2 on the server and clients.

2.0.1

  • Restore automatic continuation of nearby-material building and supported manual cooking/refueling; no second action is required after fetching.
  • Save building reservations with the character separately from backpack slots, allowing building with a full backpack. Cancelled reservations remain reusable and return when backpack space is available.
  • Resume confirmed Runic Agriculture batches using reserved materials and Agriculture's own placement checks.
  • Complete native pickup bookkeeping before exact material snapshots, avoiding a false conflict during the first consumption of newly loaded supplies.
  • Restore configured ItemDrawers material sources, including assigned empty drawers and large quantities.
  • Require matching Runic Storage 2.0.1 on the server and clients.

2.0.0

  • Replace inventory ownership handoffs with shared server authority and durable operations.
  • Allow concurrent chest viewing, crafting, transfers, and production.
  • Preserve character transfer receipts with verified character saves; reject stale/replayed changes.
  • Recover first-enrollment identity across native world reloads and recover destroyed inventory through marked chests.
  • Require matching module builds on host/server and clients. Crafting and Production now depend on Storage 2.0.0.
  • See README for changed building/manual-fetch controls and the supported container boundary.
