This mod requires the following mods to function
denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim
BepInEx pack for Valheim. Preconfigured with the correct entry point for mods and preferred defaults for the community.
Preferred version: 5.4.2350README
The Greatest Portal
Early alpha. Choose where each portal goes.
- Press Use on a portal to name it and pick its destination from a list of every portal in the world, or click Pick on map and choose it on the map. No tag pairing, no portal hubs.
- Mark one portal as your default and every portal you build afterwards leads there.
- Leave a portal open (no destination) and stepping into it shows the map: click any portal, on the map or in the list on the left, and you are there.
- Mark favorites: they sit at the top of every list and carry a star on the map.
- Lists can be searched and grouped by biome.
Install on the server and on every client. All players must run the same version; a player without the mod, or with an older version than the server, is refused at connect.
How it works in play
Setting up a portal. Press Use (E) on it. The panel (drag its title to move it, its bottom-right corner to resize it) shows:
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Name | Up to 32 characters (configurable). Names do not have to be unique. |
| Destination list | Every other portal in the world, favorites first, each with where it leads and its distance. The first entry, Open portal, means no fixed destination. Up/Down move the selection, Enter confirms; a double-click on a row does both. Right-click a row for Rename, Favorite / Un-favorite and Show on map; renaming works on any portal, wherever it is. |
| Search | Type part of a name (or a biome) to filter the list. |
| Group by biome | Sections per biome, with a Favorites section first; a favorite is listed only there. Click a header to fold or open that group; Expand all / Collapse all do the lot. All of it is remembered between sessions. |
| Default new portals to point here | New portals you build lead here automatically. |
| Point all portals to here | Points every portal in the world at this one. Shown only when this portal is your default and some portal does not lead here yet. Click twice to confirm. Admins only unless the server allows everyone. |
| Pick on map | Saves the name and toggles, then opens the map: click a portal there or in the list. |
| Show on map | Opens the map centered on the chosen destination, with every portal drawn. |
Destinations are one-way: Home -> Swamp does not make the swamp portal lead home. Set the swamp
portal's destination too, or leave it open. A portal with a destination behaves exactly like a
paired vanilla portal, including the usual item restrictions.
Travelling through an open portal. Step in and the map opens on your position with every portal drawn as a portal pin. The list on the left shows favorites first, then the rest alphabetically, each with its distance; it has the same search box and biome grouping as the panel. Click a pin or a row to travel there. Right-click marks a favorite. Esc, or stepping out of the doorway, closes the map and you stay. The usual rules apply: no travelling with ore, or during a boss fight if the world forbids it.
On the map at other times. Press P while the large map is open to show every portal with the
list, click a portal to center the map on it, press P again to hide them. Right-click a portal
to mark a favorite.
Keys (configurable)
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
E on a portal |
Configure it |
Up / Down, Enter, Esc in the panel |
Move the selection, confirm, cancel |
| Mouse wheel over a list | Scroll by a few rows per notch (configurable) |
P on the large map |
Show or hide every portal and the portal list |

Favorites and the default portal are yours alone and are kept per world in
BepInEx/config/TheGreatestPortal/<world>-<seed>.txt.
Adding the mod to an existing world
Nothing is lost. Each portal keeps its name (the vanilla tag). A portal that was paired by tag keeps that portal as its destination, in both directions; an unpaired portal becomes an open portal. From then on names no longer pair anything: change destinations in the panel. (XPortal's stored destinations cannot be carried over: it remembers them by an id the game renumbers on every world load.)
Removing the mod later leaves the names in place and vanilla pairs by tag again.
Console commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
tgp_status |
Portal count, picker state, favorites |
tgp_list |
Every portal with its destination |
tgp_default <name> / tgp_default clear |
Set or clear the default portal |
tgp_refresh |
Ask the server for the portal list again |
Compatibility
Replaces XPortal, TargetPortal, AnyPortal and PortalRules; do not run it alongside them. Works with mods that add new portal pieces as long as they register them as portals with the game (most do). Custom portals' item rules are respected.
Known limitations of this alpha
- Gamepad: the panel and the map list are mouse and keyboard only for now.
- Portal pins on the map use vanilla's portal icon; no icon of their own yet.
CHANGELOG
Changelog
1.2.0 — 2026-09-28
-
Two new sections at the top of both destination lists. Others' Recents shows where everyone else has been lately: the server now notes both ends of every trip anyone takes, so this is the one part of the list that knows something your own game could not work out. Recently Created shows the portals built most recently. Each shows 5 by default and can be turned off in the settings. Older clients and servers still understand the newer ones, in both directions.
-
Every row carries a star at its right end, filled when the portal is a favorite and hollow when it is not. Clicking it flips the favorite, and the name no longer needs a star in front of it.
-
Centering on a portal slides the map there instead of cutting to it, so you can see which way and how far it is from where you are. A drag or a zoom during the slide stops it rather than fighting it.
-
Right-clicking a row or a pin on the map opens a menu instead of favoriting outright, which left no way to ask for anything else and was easy to do by accident. The menu can rename a portal from the map, which until now meant walking to one and pressing Use.
-
A favorite keeps its ordinary place in the list as well as appearing under Favorites. Starring a portal used to take it out of its biome, which is exactly where you would go looking for it.
-
The portal list on the map can be moved by dragging its heading and resized from the grip in its bottom-right corner, and it stays where you put it. It also starts at the top of the map view and a little wider than before.
-
Where a portal leads had been squeezed to a letter and an ellipsis in that list. The distance column now takes only the room it needs, and the rest goes to the destination; a wider list gives it more still.
1.1.0 — 2026-09-28
-
Portal pins no longer blink when anybody builds or removes a portal. The pins were cleared and rebuilt from scratch on every catalog snapshot, which was fine when that only happened on opening the map — but the server sends one whenever the world's portals change, so on a server where portals come and go, every pin and every label on everyone's map was destroyed and recreated each time. A portal that has not changed now keeps the pin it already had.
-
The catalog is sent only when it really changed. It was built in
ZDOMan.GetPortalListorder, which walks a dictionary's values — an order nothing promises and that shifts as portals are built and torn down. A reshuffle alone looked like a change and sent a snapshot to everybody. It is sorted by portal id now. -
Portal pins moved from pin type 150 to 1000. 150 was picked as "clear of TheGreatestMap's 100+ range", but that mod does not use a fixed range: it hands out one type per distinct icon key a map has recorded, counting up from 100, so it reaches 150 on a map that has seen 51 kinds of thing and then both mods own the same number — which means one mod's icon registration deleting the other's, and its marker checks matching our pins. TheGreatestMap now refuses to allocate at or above 1000, so this is the one number both agree on. These pins are never saved, so nothing needs migrating.
-
Every portal in the destination list on the map now has a pin button at the end of its row that puts the map over that portal, without choosing it. Stepping into an open portal had no way to look at where a portal is before going there, because clicking its row is what sends you.
1.0.4 — 2026-09-27
1.0.3 — 2026-09-27
1.0.2 — 2026-09-25
- The log now says what became of every portal you build: whether it took your default portal as its destination, or exactly why it did not. If your default portal has gone missing, that is now said on screen too, instead of quietly leaving the new portal open.
- Setting or clearing the default portal, reading your favorites file, and every name or destination sent to the server are logged as well. The server, for its part, notes each portal it meets for the first time, with the destination its builder gave it. Nothing else in play changes; any version from 0.1.0 up still connects to any other.
- The panel used to write a page of interface details into everyone's log the first time it opened. That is now a debug message, so it stays out of the log file.
1.0.1 — 2026-09-20
- New "Lock Configuration" setting (General, on by default, the server's): while on, the Rules can be changed only by the server's admins, from their own game, and every other player sees them read-only. Before this any player could turn on "Anyone Can Redirect All Portals" for the whole server -- the very thing that rule exists to gate. Not a breaking change.
1.0.0 — 2026-09-16
- First stable release: no longer an early alpha. Nothing changes in play from 0.5.0, and any version from 0.1.0 up still connects to any other.
0.5.0 — 2026-09-16
- A Recents section tops the lists in the panel and on the map: the portals you most recently traveled to or from, newest first, so the way back is always one click away. They keep their usual place below as well. "Recent Portals" sets how many it shows (default 5; 0 hides it). The list is yours alone and is kept per world with your favorites.
- Favorite the portal you are standing at: a star beside the name in the panel. Click it to add the portal to your favorites and again to take it off. A portal never appears in its own list, so until now it could only be favorited from another portal's panel or on the map.
0.4.0 — 2026-09-16
0.3.3 — 2026-09-15
- Portal pins wear the color TheGreatestMap paints portals, pulse and all, instead of plain white, so the picker's pins match the portal markers already on the map. Without that mod they stay white, as every vanilla pin is.
- The portal under the pointer keeps its own color and lights up instead: a halo in that same color, breathing gently, behind a pin grown half again as large. It used to turn pale gold, which threw away the color you had chosen for portals at the moment you were looking hardest.
- The destination map is the map you already know. It used to hide your own markers while you picked a portal, which made it look like a different map; now everything the M key shows is still there, portals included. The "Hide Other Pins While Choosing" setting is gone with it.
0.3.2 — 2026-09-15
- The plugin reports its own version again. 0.3.1's DLL still announced itself to BepInEx as 0.3.0, so a log line named the wrong release. Nothing else changed.
0.3.1 — 2026-09-15
Client-side; works with a 0.2.x server.
- Portals on the map answer the pointer: the one you are about to click grows, turns gold and shows its name whatever the zoom, so it is clear what a click will do. Hovering a row in the list lights up that portal's pin the same way, which is how you find a name on the map.
0.3.0 — 2026-09-14
Client-side; works with a 0.2.x server.
- Go somewhere else just this once. Hold the detour key (default Alt) as you step into a portal and its destination map opens instead of the usual trip. Pick anywhere and go; the portal keeps the destination it is set to. A remote portal can stay pointed home while you still take the occasional trip elsewhere from it.
- The same from the panel: right-click a portal in the list and choose "Travel here now".
- A portal whose destination has gone missing, or is still connecting, can be left this way too.
0.2.2 — 2026-09-13
Client-side; works with a 0.2.1 server.
- The panel can be moved by dragging its title and resized by dragging its bottom-right corner; both are remembered.
- Group headers carry a triangle, pointing right when folded and down when open.
- Every row in the lists shows where that portal leads ("open", "to Name") next to its name.
- With "Group by biome" on, a favorite is listed once, under Favorites, not again under its biome.
- The redirect-all button now reads "Point all portals to here" and appears only when the portal is ticked as your default and some other portal does not lead here yet.
- The default checkbox reads "Default new portals to point here". The Favorite checkbox is gone: favorites are set from a row's right-click menu (Favorite / Un-favorite) or on the map.
0.2.1 — 2026-09-13
Works with a 0.2.0 server except for renaming from the list, which needs the server updated.
- Right-click a portal in the panel's list for a menu: Rename, Add to favorites / Remove favorite, Show on map. Rename turns the row's name into a text box; Enter saves, Escape or clicking away cancels. Works on any portal, wherever it is. Server rule "Anyone Can Rename Remote Portals" (default on) can limit renaming to admins.
- Hovering an open portal no longer shows the "Open: choose the destination when you step in" text; a fixed destination still shows "To ...".
- Enter to confirm the panel no longer opens the chat as well.
- Double-clicking a portal in the panel's list chooses it and confirms, like Enter or OK.
- No more "LiberationSans SDF Font Asset was not found" warnings when the lists are built.
0.2.0 — 2026-09-13
Works with a 0.1.0 server, but update everyone anyway.
- New icon: an in-game portal.
- Search box in the panel and in the map list: type part of a name or a biome to filter.
- Group by biome: a switch in the panel and on the map (remembered in the config) puts a Favorites section first, then one section per biome. Click a section header to fold it away or open it again; Expand all and Collapse all do the lot. Folded groups are remembered.
- Up/Down move the selection in the panel, Enter confirms, Esc cancels.
- A scrollbar appears on the lists when they overflow, and the mouse wheel moves a few rows per notch ("List Scroll Rows", default 4). The wheel no longer zooms the camera while the panel is open.
- "All portals lead here": points every portal in the world at this one. Click twice to confirm. Admins only, unless "Anyone Can Redirect All Portals" is on.
- The default toggle reads "Default: new portals lead here".
- American spelling throughout.
0.1.0 — 2026-09-12
Early alpha, first test build. Install on the server and on every client.
- Use on a portal opens a panel: name it and pick its destination from a list of every portal in the world (favorites first, with distances), or pick it on the map.
- A default portal: every portal you build afterwards leads there.
- Open portals: leave the destination unset and stepping in shows the map with every portal drawn; click a pin, or a row in the list on the left, to travel.
- Favorites (right-click a portal on the map or in a list) sit first in every list.
Pon the large map shows every portal with the list; click one to center the map on it.- Adding the mod to a world keeps existing vanilla tag pairs.
