This mod requires the following mods to function

BepInEx pack for Valheim. Preconfigured with the correct entry point for mods and preferred defaults for the community.
Preferred version: 5.4.2351README
Potential Reforged 1.0.2
Client-only Valheim mod for Forge of Potential success odds and failure consequences.
Install
With a mod manager, install this package and its declared dependency, then launch the modded game. For manual installation:
- Install BepInExPack Valheim 5 on your gaming PC, or enable it in your mod-manager profile.
- For manual installation, create
BepInEx/plugins/Dyls123-PotentialReforged/in your Valheim folder and copy this ZIP's root-levelPotentialReforged.dllinto it. The config is generated atBepInEx/config/Dyls123.PotentialReforged.cfgafter first launch. - Start the game. Check
BepInEx/LogOutput.logforPotential Reforged 1.0.2: all Forge patches installed.
Nothing needs installing on the dedicated server. Each player who wants these rules installs their own copy. Settings are local and are not synchronized or enforced for other players. Jotunn is not required.
For Thunderstore/r2modman installation, the manager creates the Author-ModName folder. Publish under team Dyls123 with package name PotentialReforged to obtain Dyls123-PotentialReforged.
Configuration
Close Valheim, edit BepInEx/config/Dyls123.PotentialReforged.cfg, and restart. If omitted, the file is generated on first launch.
[Chances]
SuccessChance = 65
[Failure]
BreakOnFailure = false
ReduceLevelOnFailure = true
SuccessChance accepts 0–100, including decimals. Failure is automatically the remainder: 65 means 65% success and 35% failure. There is no separate failure value that could conflict with the total. Zero always fails; 100 always succeeds.
| BreakOnFailure | ReduceLevelOnFailure | Result of a failed attempt |
|---|---|---|
| false | false | Item keeps its quality level |
| false | true | Item loses one quality level, with a minimum of 1 |
| true | false or true | Item is destroyed; normal game break refunds apply |
Breaking enabled means every failed attempt breaks the item, not a second random break chance. Success still increases quality normally. Idol/material consumption, animations, crafting duration and normal crafting remain under the game's existing rules. Non-breaking failure text is adjusted so it does not report a level loss when that option is disabled.
Defaults are 65% success, no item destruction, and one level lost on failure (minimum level 1).
Compatibility and validation
- Compiled successfully against the locally installed dedicated-server game libraries (Steam build 25390671), using BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2351 references.
- Automated tests checked odds, exact 0%/100% boundaries, both toggles, the level-1 floor, and all patch sites in the real
InventoryGui.DoCraftingmethod. The patch preserves unrelated crafting instructions. - Not yet tested inside the running Valheim client or in multiplayer. Compatibility with your client game version still needs an in-game check.
- Do not combine with another mod that changes Forge of Potential roll/failure logic without compatibility testing.
- If the expected game code changes, patch installation is rejected as a unit and an error is logged. In that case vanilla behavior remains active, including its normal risk of destruction. Check the successful-load message before testing valuable equipment.
For an in-game smoke test, use disposable gear: set success to 100 and confirm an upgrade, then set it to 0 and test the three failure behaviors in the table. Confirm an ordinary forge/workbench upgrade is unaffected, and repeat while connected to your server. Restore your desired settings afterward.
Upgrading from Potential Control
Remove earlier PotentialControl.dll and PotentialReforged.dll copies from their old plugin folders before installing this build. The config is now Dyls123.PotentialReforged.cfg. The old config is not loaded; the new file starts with the new defaults unless you edit it.
Remove
Close Valheim and remove BepInEx/plugins/Dyls123-PotentialReforged/PotentialReforged.dll from the client/profile. The configuration may also be deleted. Future refinement uses the game's normal behavior; existing item levels are not reverted.
