README

Crow's Nest 0.1.6

A patched half-barrel lookout for Valheim's Longship and Drakkar.

Installation

Install BepInExPack_Valheim: https://thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/denikson/BepInExPack_Valheim/ Close Valheim. Extract this archive into the game folder or active mod profile, merging BepInEx. The DLL belongs at BepInEx/plugins/CrowsNest/CrowsNest.dll. Keep only one active copy. Launch through BepInEx; startup should report Crow's Nest 0.1.6 ready. No configuration is required.

Controls

Stand aboard near the mast and use its “Climb to crow's nest” interaction. One lookout can occupy each ship. Look down at the basket and Use to climb down. Camera look remains available. Movement, jump and combat actions are suppressed while occupying the nest. You cannot board while encumbered or using another attachment/control.

Existing Longships and Drakkars gain the nest when loaded. Rafts, Karves and custom ships are unsupported. No recipe or construction materials are needed. Other seats and steering remain available.

Multiplayer

The author reports a successful two-player session sailing and climbing repeatedly. Use the same build on participating clients. Client-only use can work on an unmodded server while a modded client owns the ship simulation. The current ship owner must have the mod to grant/renew the reservation. An unmodded owner can cause boarding timeout or a return to deck after lease expiry. Server installation alone does not fix an unmodded client owning the ship.

Unmodded observers cannot see the basket or custom poses. Code inspection indicates the rider remains ship-relative and appears near the mast using the ordinary mast pose. Mixed-client observers/handoffs are not fully playtested.

Known limits

Version 0.1.6 includes reservation timing tweaks: small differences between client clocks no longer reject a valid renewal. The existing reservation expiry remains in place. It also adds clearer diagnostics for unexpected exits. The author confirmed successful two-player sailing and climbing with this version. If an unexpected return to deck occurs, preserve BepInEx/LogOutput.log before restarting and report the ship type, mod versions and what you were doing.

Mods changing ships, attachment systems, mast interactions or animation controllers may conflict. Equipment and custom avatars may clip. Normal damage remains active.

To update, close the game and replace the DLL. To uninstall, climb down and log out first, close the game, then remove the CrowsNest plugin folder. No saved boat replacement is introduced.

Build and credits

Prepared against Valheim 1.0.16. The packaged DLL matches the archived 0.1.6 photo timing candidate exactly. Compilation, 31 API/assembly checks and 28 policy cases passed. The author explicitly confirmed successful two-player sailing and climbing on 0.1.6 on 4 October 2026.

CHANGELOG

Version 0.1.6 — First public release

Adds the patched half-barrel crow's nest to Longship and Drakkar, with animated ascent and descent and a standing rim grip. Keeps one lookout attached to the moving ship; movement and jump do not casually drop the occupant. Restores normal local and replicated animation state on exit. Includes reservation timing fixes: accepts up to five seconds of future clock skew without extending the original lease expiry, preventing small clock differences from rejecting valid renewals. Adds diagnostics for invalid reservations, intentional returns and unexpected detach calls to help investigate screenshot-related or other interruptions. Author confirmed successful two-player sailing and repeated mast climbing with 0.1.6, including the timing tweaks. Current ship owner must have the mod to service reservations; mixed-client ownership limitations are documented.
