README

Reliable Crafting 1.0.0

Craft and upgrade using materials from nearby permitted chests. This beta adds reliable local input handling for Frost Foundry casts and Liquid Frost, plus Frigid Kiln Ice, while retaining normal workstation and cauldron crafting assistance.

Food from chests is OFF by default

Cooking.FoodFromChests = false keeps stored meat, Seal Blubber and other food ingredients out of cooking stations and ovens. Carry the prepared food you want to bake, then load it normally. When your backpack runs out, more clicks do not pull food from a chest.

To opt into chest food loading, set FoodFromChests = true in the [Cooking] section of BepInEx/config/au.tyvalheim.reliablecrafting.cfg. This is separate from oven fuel, Frost Foundry casts/Liquid Frost, Frigid Kiln Ice, and recipe-based cauldron/workbench crafting. Those features remain available. Food you already carry still follows Valheim’s normal selection; the switch does not control another mod’s independent loader.

Crafting from storage

The default chest range is 30 metres in 3D. Loaded player-built wooden, reinforced, black-metal and permitted personal chests are supported. Wardrobes and parked Cart/Karve/Longship/Drakkar storage are also supported, with separate default-on [Storage] UseWardrobes, UseCarts and UseBoats toggles. Vehicle storage must be parked, closed and already owned by this client; the mod never takes vehicle ownership. Busy, protected, inaccessible and unsupported storage is excluded. Carried materials are used first; missing ingredients need real empty backpack cells.

Version 1.0.0 removes the persistent manual-access restriction. One workstation Craft action requests chest access and continues automatically after ownership arrives, including chests opened manually earlier. A delayed or missing reply does not prevent continuation once ownership is confirmed. Permissions, refreshed contents and exact payment are still checked. A disconnected owner or unavailable chest can cause a five-second timeout without payment. Cancellation, recipe changes, menu closure and changed access cancel the pending action. Manual cooking/fuelling actions require a deliberate retry if chest access is pending.

Cooking and recipe-selection fixes

Prepared food in your backpack loads into remote-owned ovens and racks through native networking, with one unconfirmed input at a time. The next input waits for observed slot progress. Native owner capacity is used unless the current owner advertises expanded capacity; full or pending stations leave remaining food carried. Load it normally after collecting the batch. This does not take ownership or fetch extra food from storage. Native networking still has limitations under disconnects and simultaneous identical-food races. Cooking timing follows the owner's settings.

Version 0.1.10 fixes recipe rows remaining grey during a cold first menu visit, then appearing ready only after leaving and returning. Existing row colours and availability update as nearby storage is discovered or changes. The earlier post-craft availability and native payment fixes remain.

The mod no longer rebuilds the recipe list every half-second. Recipe buttons survive clicks, while native selected-recipe ingredient counts and Craft-button eligibility keep updating.

What changed for the Frost Foundry and other processors

Supported fuel and cast actions now require the station to be owned by your client before any materials are pulled or consumed. Remote-owned stations refuse; let their owner operate them or wait for normal ownership transfer. The mod does not force ownership.

A locally owned station accepts the native input before inventory callbacks run. Failed uncommitted inputs are restored; an already accepted input is never automatically refunded or replayed. If several different casts are available in chests, carry the one you want instead of letting the mod choose.

Use Reliable Smelting 0.3.1 for automatic refuelling and optional free refills. This version respects a fuel click already handled by Smelting, leaving chest/carried supplies untouched. Reliable Cooking 0.1.2 supplies cooking conveniences and preserves the foundry's native slot and switches.

Install

Requires BepInExPack_Valheim. Exit Valheim and install the ZIP, keeping one ReliableCrafting.dll. Preserve your existing BepInEx/config/au.tyvalheim.reliablecrafting.cfg. General.CookingEnabled controls manual cooking/fuel assistance; General.RangeMeters defaults to 30. Restart after edits. Friends/server need not install this client assistance mod.

Do not combine multiple crafting-from-storage implementations without testing. Normal permissions remain in force. The mod uses existing native chest access, not a custom peer protocol.

Validation and limits

Built against installed Valheim 1.0.20 with warnings treated as errors. Passed 181 policy/transaction checks, 93 static API/binary checks and 2,345 isolated Unity assertions. Coverage includes automatic craft continuation at eight workstation types after manual chest interaction and simulated remote ownership, missing replies, exact ingredient/output counts and existing cooking/smelting regressions. Network transport, elapsed time and scene services are fixtures; this new chest-access patch has not yet had a live multiplayer gameplay test.

After an assistance error, guarded station inputs stay paused until restart rather than falling through to native removal. Ordinary recipe crafting and unrelated inventory actions remain available.

This beta fixes unsafe input ordering and a conflict between the two mods' fuel-click handlers. It cannot restore previously lost materials.

CHANGELOG

1.0.0 - Automatic chest access

  • Opening a chest manually no longer disables later automatic access while it stays loaded.
  • One recipe-crafting attempt requests access and continues automatically after local ownership arrives, without opening the chest or clicking Craft again.
  • Delayed, duplicate or missing replies do not authorise withdrawals or permanently disable automatic crafting. Current ownership, permission, range and refreshed stock are checked before transfer.
  • Existing cancellation and single-continuation handling remains; ingredients are transferred and consumed once. Unavailable ownership times out after five seconds without payment.
  • Expanded optional crafting diagnostics. Food from storage remains opt-in and off by default; parked vehicle storage still requires local ownership.
  • Nexus and Thunderstore use one identical release DLL.

0.1.10 — beta, 13 October 2026

  • Fix cold first-open recipe rows remaining grey after nearby ingredients are discovered. Update existing row availability/colours as storage refreshes, without rebuilding buttons, changing list order or requiring a menu reopen.
  • Preserve repeated crafting, native payment guards and single-click recipe selection.
  • Pace native remote oven/rack inputs until previous progress is observed, respect the current owner's known capacity, and coordinate with Cooking 0.1.2 so loading resumes after collection. Remaining food stays carried when the station is full or an earlier input is pending.
  • Keep FoodFromChests off by default, native remote food routing, strict wards, and all wardrobe/parked-cart/parked-boat source toggles.
  • Validate the full workflow with 2,302 isolated native assertions, 175 policy/transaction assertions and 88 static API/binary checks. The author reports successful combined gameplay retesting on 14 October 2026.

0.1.9 beta — 2026-10-13

  • Fix recipes greying out after each craft at the food prep table, cauldron, mead kettle and other crafting tables. Native list rendering now includes permitted chest ingredients during the post-craft refresh without relaxing native payment or re-entry guards.
  • Refresh the inventories touched by each ingredient transfer before native crafting redraws the list, so exhausted supplies do not keep a stale craftable row.
  • Keep the recipe-click fix: no background timer rebuilds or replaces recipe buttons.
  • Add native repeated-crafting, Craft-button, batch-crafting and post-payment UI-exception tests at all eight installed crafting-station types. Expanded three-mod suite: 1,402 assertions, zero failed groups.
  • Includes the remote-oven input, wardrobe/parked-cart/parked-boat support and failure protections from 0.1.7–0.1.8. Food from chests remains off by default.

Changelog

0.1.8 — beta, 13 October 2026

  • Fix carried food being blocked in ovens and wooden/iron cooking stations when another client owns the station. Use vanilla validation and owner-directed food input without taking ownership or pulling from storage.
  • Preserve local transactional inputs, remote Foundry/cast/fuel refusal, strict wards, and earlier Harmony vetoes. Remote carried-food handling retains vanilla network limitations.
  • Remove the half-second crafting-panel rebuild that destroyed recipe buttons and could lose clicks between mouse press and release. Native selected-recipe ingredient counts and Craft eligibility keep updating.
  • Retain FoodFromChests=false by default, plus the wardrobe and parked cart/boat toggles from 0.1.7.
  • Add native remote-food regressions for click and hotbar input, both food settings, stored Seal Blubber, full/unlit/incompatible stations, ward denial, and unchanged Foundry guards. Add actual Unity-button/native-selection checks across background update passes.
  • Keep guarded station inputs paused after an assistance fault instead of falling through to native removal.
  • Validate the final Cooking 0.1.1 / Crafting 0.1.8 / Smelting 0.3.1 trio with 1,034 native assertions, 175 Crafting policy assertions and 88 Crafting API assertions.
  • Package validation records distinguish simulated RPC delivery from a live multi-client session.

0.1.7 — beta, 13 October 2026

  • Add player-built wardrobes, carts and Karve/Longship/Drakkar storage as ingredient sources.
  • Add separate default-on Storage.UseWardrobes, Storage.UseCarts and Storage.UseBoats switches. Turning any off immediately excludes that category and cancels pending crafting.
  • Use carts and boats only while parked, closed and already owned by this client. Never request or force vehicle ownership. Allow normal boat bobbing/rocking while refusing horizontal travel and yaw rotation.
  • Resolve child vehicle containers through their native root network view and keep their original inventory save callbacks.
  • Track registered vehicle positions so storage is found after it has been moved and parked elsewhere; recheck live 3D range and access before every withdrawal.
  • Retain strict overlapping wards, privacy, busy-container checks, player-built restrictions, empty-backpack-slot requirements and rollback on failed staging.
  • Keep food loading from all storage OFF by default. Existing cooking/foundry fuel and cast behaviour remains unchanged.
  • Validate with 163 policy/transaction checks, 77 API/binary checks and 750 isolated native assertions against Valheim 1.0.17. In-game testing of this new storage expansion remains pending.

0.1.6 — beta, 12 October 2026

  • Add Cooking.FoodFromChests, off by default for new and existing configurations without this key.
  • Ovens and wooden/iron cooking stations now insert carried food only unless chest food loading is explicitly enabled. Stored meat and Seal Blubber are not selected after your backpack runs out.
  • Keep oven fuel, Frost Foundry casts/Liquid Frost, Frigid Kiln Ice and cauldron/workbench recipe assistance independent of the food setting.
  • Preserve native manual food input and finished-output collection. Read the food setting before any cooking-input chest lookup, request or staging.
  • Add on/off regressions covering actual food-station interactions, prepared oven food beside stored Seal Blubber, and unchanged chest fuel/foundry behaviour.

0.1.5 — beta, 12 October 2026

  • Support Frost Foundry casts and Liquid Frost, and Frigid Kiln Ice through native station components.
  • Replace supported manual remove-then-RPC inputs with local transactional commits before inventory callbacks.
  • Require local station ownership before chest staging or carried-item debit; never force station ownership.
  • Restore failed uncommitted inputs; never refund/replay a committed input after a later exception.
  • Require player selection when several different foundry casts are available in chests.
  • Honour HarmonyX __runOriginal so Reliable Smelting 0.3.0 free refills do not stage/consume fuel or overwrite a successful result.
  • Preserve 0.1.3 workstation crafting continuation and chest-access protocol.
  • Warnings-as-errors build; 90 executable checks, 74 API/binary checks and the shared isolated native suite pass. Live multiplayer verification remains pending.
  • Supersedes the unpublished 0.1.4 exclusion-only candidate with actual foundry support. The original reported loss mechanism remains unconfirmed.

0.1.4 — candidate hotfix, 11 October 2026

  • Limit manual cooking and fuel assistance to vanilla cooking spits, iron cooking stations and ovens.
  • Pass Frost Foundry and unknown cooking-station interactions straight through to Valheim before chest access or withdrawals.
  • Add station-selection regressions and compiled guard-order checks.
  • Prepared after a report of lost Liquid Frost accompanied by a chest-access refusal. The loss mechanism remains unconfirmed; this change isolates the foundry from assistance rather than claiming recovery or a verified root-cause fix.
  • Not installed automatically. Live multiplayer acceptance remains required.

0.1.3 — beta, 9 October 2026

  • Workstation crafts/upgrades now continue automatically after required chest approvals arrive, without a second click.
  • Keep native progress and Cancel controls available while waiting; ignore duplicate craft clicks during that wait.
  • Revalidate the original player, recipe, variant, quantity, upgrade item and workstation before continuing.
  • Cancel on menu close, explicit cancellation, context changes, manual chest interaction, source loss, refusal or timeout. Late replies do not revive cancelled work.
  • Resume at most once, rechecking materials, permissions, ownership and inventory capacity through the existing crafting path.
  • Log pending, resumed and cancelled craft events. Manual cooking/building retries remain unchanged.
  • Warnings-as-errors build, 77 executable checks and 68 static API/binary checks pass. Live multiplayer acceptance remains required.

0.1.2 — beta hotfix, 9 October 2026

  • Normal chest interaction now always passes through to Valheim; removed the indefinite pending-reply block.
  • Treasure chests and other unsupported containers are excluded from crafting access tracking.
  • Manual interaction takes priority over an outstanding crafting request and discards its approval slot.
  • Keep manually used containers on native reply handling until unload, preventing delayed replies from being reused as crafting approval.
  • For a manually used chest owned by another peer, ask the player to open and close it normally before retrying assistance. Locally owned, closed, permitted chests continue to work.
  • Preserve native permissions, wards, busy checks and owner-controlled access; no forced ownership.
  • Request access to all required ingredient chests in one attempt instead of requiring a separate click per chest. Revalidate every source before transferring any items.
  • Added routing regressions and compiled-hook verification. Build, 65 executable checks and 49 static API/binary checks pass; live multiplayer acceptance remains required.

0.1.1 — beta, 9 October 2026

  • Stop the background chest refresh from extending its own activity window indefinitely.
  • Respect the refresh interval for dirty chests that are busy or inaccessible.
  • Reuse the refresh timer instead of allocating one every active frame.
  • Index reserved source quantities and occupied inventory positions instead of repeated nested scans.
  • Request/check access once per source chest in a transfer plan.
  • Fall back to carried-item previews if an alternative-ingredient lookup fails.
  • Always log displayed assistance messages, independently of the diagnostics setting.
  • Add optional chest request/reply details with object IDs, owner IDs and approval state.
  • Add idle-expiry and compiled logging regression checks.

This mod is still in beta, please share any feedback and bug reports.
