README

Kinger's Feast

A cooking and brewing overhaul for Valheim – from the first wild leek in the Meadows to the Yule table in the Deep North.

A personal mod. I build Kinger's Feast for my partner and me to play together, so it changes often – sometimes daily – and comes without support. You are welcome to try it: start a new world, keep backups, and know that removing it from a world takes its items with it.

AI usage. Made with Claude, Anthropic's AI model, under my direction: I decide what goes in and how it should play, Claude writes the code. Some of the sounds were made with Suno or ElevenLabs. Every version goes through an automated in-game world test of several hundred checks and through our own co-op play before it is released.

Features

  • 550+ new items: wild herbs, mushrooms, berries, fruit trees, nuts, roots, fish dishes, breads, pies, sauces, jams, soups and stews for every biome, plus extra drops from boars, deer, necks, bears, wolves, lox, serpents, hares, moose, seals and frost trolls.
  • Over 50 meads in tiers around the vanilla meads: carry weight, speed, wet immunity, trophy luck, fishing, regeneration, resistances, skills and more. Meads are drunk like vanilla meads (no food slot), and only one mead per family is active at a time.
  • New stations and tools: a clay oven for early roasting, drying and baking (unlocked by your first hazelnuts), a hand quern for grinding meal, flour, spice and salt, and a seed pouch to plant berry bushes and fruit trees anywhere – they bear again after every harvest. Their falling logs, split logs and stumps are tinted to match each fruit tree.
  • Logical cooking: doughs at the food preparation table and then into the oven, soups in the cauldron, meat and fish on the spit, mead bases in the mead ketill and then the fermenter.
  • Cookbook stand: build it at a workbench, search by dish, ingredient or station, and see what a recipe makes, where it is made, and what goes into it. Cooking, milling and fermenting conversions are included, as are mead effects.
  • Smokehouse and drying rack: a small thatched smokehouse smokes six pieces of meat or fish at once over a slow wood fire – nothing burns, and bacon, smoked venison, böckling and varmrökt lax come out as two pieces instead of one. The drying rack (a northern hjell) needs no fire: stockfish, dried meat, fruit, mushrooms and malt dry on it by themselves, as long as no rain falls on it. Both show what hangs on them.
  • The sea: mine a Leviathan for salt, barnacle meat, kelp, sea cucumbers and the rare Leviathan pearl. Every vanilla fish has its own dish – including Böckling, Inlagd sill and Surströmming.
  • Feasts for every biome, placed with the serving tray, plus seasonal ones: Julbord (December), Midsommarbord (June) and Kräftskiva (August).
  • Weather and night: wild plants grow back with the sky above them. Mushrooms, moss and marsh plants shoot up in rain and mist; berries, nuts, fruit and meadow herbs ripen in the sun; frost numbs all but the plants of the mountains and the far north. Crayfish and the glowing moss of the Mistlands show themselves only at night. Look at a picked plant to see what it is waiting for.
  • Hideouts and finds: some plants only grow against tree trunks, at the foot of trees or beside rocks. Crypts and caves hold pickable finds, world chests carry a little of the mod's food, and there are forager's caches and magpie nests to discover.
  • Visible wild finds: small custom loose items and pickable models are enlarged to at least 0.3 m across; larger models keep their original size.
  • Lucky finds: in every biome, one in fifty harvests or so of certain wild plants and fruit trees yields something the gods have touched – Idun's golden apple, an elf-ring cep, Sif's gold among the rye. Eaten raw, it is as good as the best food of the next land and lasts 40 minutes. It cannot be planted, cooked or found in chests.
  • Three new animals: the pale, spotted tryffelsvin of the Meadows and the Black Forest leaves you alone unless you strike it – tamed, fed and kept near trees it digs up summer truffles. The shy tjäder (capercaillie) of the Black Forest hides ground nests under firs and pines and lays eggs once tamed. The white snöhare of the Mountains is faster than you are; its pelts make a cloak against the chill of the night.
  • Varietal honey: five hives that only thrive in their own biome, each with its own honey. The strong meads ask for it.
  • Hildir takes cooking requests and then sells spices from the far south, kitchen wear and feast clothes. Haldor sells a chef's hat (Cooking +20) once you know your way around a cauldron.
  • Secret recipes: the best dishes and meads are learned from recipe scrolls – found in chests, bought, earned or taken from the great bosses.
  • Kitchen decor with comfort: drying herbs, a leek braid, strings of sausages, a smoked ham, a copper pot and a spice shelf.
  • Legendary tools: Fellir, the felling axe, and Njord's rod.
  • Deep-forged tools: a flametal and a bloodgold pickaxe and felling axe. The black forge can draw these four out again and again, up to level 50 – each level costs more than the last and gives a harder, lighter swing and +0.10 to its loot multiplier (+10 percentage points per level; up to ×6 ore and wood for flametal and ×6.15 for bloodgold). From level 10 the picks shatter the rock around the blow. Felling axes start hitting nearby tree trunks at quality 2 (0.2 m radius); radius grows by 0.2 m per quality up to 4 m, while the total tree limit rises from two at quality 2 to five at quality 50. Nearby trees take half damage; buildings, players and creatures are excluded. Ordinary pickaxes also gain a small vein-shattering radius with each quality level (0.3 m per level above quality 1; up to eight nearby fragments).
  • Refining without the gamble: by default, every refinement at the Forge of Potential succeeds – nothing shatters any more. Instead each level past the item's normal maximum asks for more idols: one for the first, then two, four, six, eight … Set Forge of Potential > Vanilla in the BepInEx configuration to restore vanilla chances, costs and breakage rules. Haldor sells every kind of idol you have found (50 coins per tier), the skald now and then gives one, and a visiting dvergr always brings one.
  • Bastu: a sauna stove – hot stones over a wood fire, without the smoke. Heat it inside walls and under a roof and sweat next to it for a while: you leave warm, with stamina and eitr coming back twice as fast for 10 minutes.
  • A wandering skald: now and then, at dusk, a skald sits down at the fire of your homestead and wishes for one dish – something you can already cook, or a dish of the land you live in, but always from ingredients you have already found. What lies in your bag or the chests by the fire he asks for more often, and if you talk to him he tells you what the dish is made of and where it is cooked. Look at him and press the dish's hotbar key to hand it over: he pays with a small gift, a secret recipe scroll or a song that lifts everyone at the fire for a while. Leave him hungry and he is gone by sunrise, a little rueful. He never fights; strike him and all you get is a puff of smoke.
  • A herb-wife sometimes comes instead of the skald: she buys what grows wild – herbs, mushrooms, berries, nuts, roots, fruit – until her purse is empty, three favourites at double price. For every 25 coins she adds something from her basket: plants from other lands, now and then a lucky find, or one of her remedies – wound salve, herb-sight drops that mark wild plants on the map, glow salve to shine without a torch. Herb-sight can also be brewed at a Mistlands-level cauldron from 4 glowing moss, 2 magecaps, 2 royal jelly and 2 sap. Her shop opens the familiar trader menu with eight random, discovered Kochmod goods up to the homestead's biome tier.
  • Bone meal: one item advances a planted seedling or young fruit tree by 25% of its full growing time. The existing three-item fertilizer use still makes picked bushes and fruit trees bear again.
  • Craft from nearby chests: by default, building, crafting and upgrading can use materials from accessible containers within 10 m, alongside the items in your inventory. The ingredient counter includes nearby storage, and crafting is disabled if the combined quantity is short. The radius is configurable from 1–50 m. This feature is built in and does not require AzuCraftyBoxes. Set Crafting > AusKistenCraften to false to restore vanilla crafting, or change Crafting > Kistenradius to adjust the range.
  • Seasonings from the quern (wild leek, meadow herbs, juniper, king's spices): carry one and every meal takes a pinch and lasts a third longer.
  • Hugin explains every new thing once, just like his vanilla tips.
  • Many small Nordic easter eggs.

Installation

Use a mod manager (Thunderstore Mod Manager or r2modman):

  1. Install Kinger's Feast – the mod manager brings BepInExPack_Valheim and Jotunn along.
  2. Start the game modded. Wild plants, bushes, fruit trees, nests and caches only appear in areas that have never been explored, so start a new world or travel to new land.

Manual: copy plugins/Kochmod.dll into BepInEx/plugins/.

Multiplayer

Every player and the server (dedicated or the hosting player) need the same Kinger's Feast version. Jotunn checks this when you connect.

Configuration

BepInEx/config/kochmod.valheim.cfg, section Inhalte:

  • SaisonfesteImmer – allow the seasonal feasts all year round.
  • GeheimeRezepte – false lets everyone discover the secret recipes the normal way (the server decides).
  • WandernderSkalde – false if no skald should ever visit (the server decides).
  • HuginTipps – false silences Hugin's tips for the mod.
  • The Entwicklung section contains developer tests – leave everything there on false.

CHANGELOG

v0.12.1

  • Dropped wild plums are plum-sized again instead of balloons.
  • Bird-cherry wood is darker still: almost black.
  • Fruit trees grown from saplings no longer vanish when they turn into a tree (the vanilla grow animation switched the whole tree off). Trees that vanished in 0.12.0 should be back after rejoining the world.
  • Felled fruit-tree logs now show their wood colour up close too, not only from a distance (the texture itself is recoloured).

v0.12.0

  • New cookbook stand: it opens like a cooking station, with every recipe on the left and, on the right, where it is made, what it needs, where each ingredient comes from and its food values. Nothing is cooked there.
  • Mead bases now describe the finished mead's effect, including Roseroot and Skald's mead.
  • Grown fruit trees now really fall: a birch-style log in the colour of its wood tips over and a stump stays behind. The tree itself drops only its fruit; chopping the log gives the fruit wood. Young trees fall without a log. Before, the log was a full-size beech log and the wood dropped twice.
  • Deep-forged tools gain +0.10 to their loot multiplier per level (up to ×6.00 for flametal and ×6.15 for bloodgold).
  • Ordinary pickaxe vein-shattering radius increases by 0.3 m per quality level above 1 – now also past level 4 at the Forge of Potential (level 5 1.2 m, level 10 2.7 m), with 2 more fragments per refinement.
  • Nearby-chest crafting steps aside when AzuCraftyBoxes or BetrValheim ("Craft from containers") already crafts from chests – two such mods counted the same chests differently.
  • Whitebeam wood is a little less bright: still white, but creamy instead of glaring.
  • Reworked the small-find comparison photo labels and display surface for a readable size check.

v0.11.9

  • Small loose-item and wild-pickable models now have a minimum 0.3 m horizontal footprint; larger models stay unchanged.

v0.11.8

  • Small loose-item models now have a minimum ground footprint, making tiny finds such as mustard seeds, periwinkles and bark easier to spot.

v0.11.7

  • Fruit trees now use matching tinted falling logs, split logs and stumps, including the dark bird-cherry wood.

v0.11.6

  • Nearby-chest crafting now checks the combined inventory and accessible chest stock in the final recipe validation, not only in the ingredient display.
  • Ingredient consumption is preflighted against that same combined stock and tested with materials split between player inventory and a chest.

v0.11.5

  • Felling axes now hit nearby tree trunks from quality 2 (0.2 m radius); radius grows with quality and the target limit increases at qualities 2, 10, 25 and 50.

v0.11.4

  • Deep-forged felling axes gain a capped tree-cleaving area effect from level 5; level 10 can hit up to three trunks, while buildings, players and creatures are excluded.
  • Ordinary pickaxes gain a small, quality-based vein-shattering radius: 0.2 m per quality level above 1, affecting up to eight nearby fragments.

v0.11.3

  • Bone meal now advances planted seedlings and young fruit trees by 25% of their full growth time per item; mature trees and non-targets do not consume it.
  • Herb-sight drops can be brewed at a Mistlands-level cauldron from glowing moss, magecaps, royal jelly and sap.

v0.11.2

  • Nearby chest crafting now shows combined inventory and chest ingredient counts.
  • Crafting is blocked when the combined available quantity is below the recipe requirement.

v0.11.1

  • Crafting, upgrading and building can use materials from accessible nearby chests; the feature can be disabled and its radius configured in BepInEx.
  • Added a vanilla mode for nearby-chest crafting and the Forge of Potential; Kinger's Feast behavior remains the default.
  • Verified both modes and chest crafting in-game, including crafting from a nearby chest and an alternative-ingredient recipe.

v0.11.0

  • Refining at the Forge of Potential always succeeds, so no item shatters any more.
  • In return each level past the normal maximum costs more idols: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 …
  • To feed it, Haldor sells every kind of idol you have found, the skald sometimes gives one and a dvergr guest always brings one.
  • Hugin explains it when you pick up your first idol.
  • New bastu stove: sweat in a closed room next to it and you are warm – twice the stamina and eitr regeneration for 10 minutes.

v0.10.0

  • The skald only wishes for dishes whose ingredients you have already found, asks more often for what you have in your bag or the chests by the fire, and tells you what the dish is made of and at which station when you talk to him.
  • One in three small fruit trees grows into an old fruit tree five days after it is grown (wild trees count from the update) – unless something is built within 6 m.
  • Now and then a herb-wife comes to the fire instead of the skald and buys your wild herbs, mushrooms, berries and fruit, with three favourites at double price each evening. For every 25 coins she adds something from her basket – seeds of far-off plants, a lucky find or one of her own remedies (wound salve, herb-sight drops, glow salve).
  • Four seasonings from the quern make every meal last longer.
  • Coloured torches, sconces and campfires now burn in their colour themselves, not only their light.
  • Wild leek, sorrel, yarrow, dill and the other common herbs grow in about every second area instead of almost everywhere (new areas only).

v0.9.0

  • Beds and dragon beds in every fruit wood.
  • Coloured flames now also for campfire, hearth, bonfire, hanging brazier and standing iron torch.
  • Turf roof and old thatch roof (all thatch roof parts).
  • Deer rugs, wolf rugs and straw mats dyed red, blue, green, ochre or bleached.

v0.8.0

  • More pieces per fruit wood: log beams 2 m and 4 m, log poles, log rafters 26° and 45°, inverted gables, a roundpole fence, chairs, carved chair, carved bench and three tables.
  • New "Glass and flame" tab: stained glass in seven colours and wood torches, sconces and braziers burning blue, green, violet, red or white.

v0.7.0

  • Hunter's cauldron (health dishes) and harvest cauldron (stamina dishes): 90 recipes moved off the crowded cauldron, both cook at the level of the cauldron next to them.
  • Haldor sells three pockets – one more inventory row each – after Eikthyr, the Elder and Fader.
  • Fruit now sways with the branches.
  • Every fruit wood gets the full building set (26° and 45° roofs, gables, quarter walls, small floors, gates, shutters), roomier chests, a painted chest and a jetty; carved and half-timbered pieces render cleanly.
  • Two new fruit trees (whitebeam, bird cherry) and rare old fruit trees with more fruit and wood.
  • The skald walks in from afar, opens doors and comes more surely after missed evenings – now and then a talkative dvergr comes instead, with gifts from the Mistlands.
  • Rare lucky finds with strong stats.
  • Felling a fruit tree no longer shows big-beech branches.
  • Text and recipe fixes.

v0.6.0

  • Three new animals (tryffelsvin, tjäder, snöhare) with summer truffles, eggs and a pelt cloak.
  • Smokehouse and drying rack.
  • Wild plants follow weather and night.
  • A wandering skald visits the hearth.
  • Four deep-forged tools up to level 50.
  • New icons for every item, a one-handed seed pouch, more easter eggs.

v0.5.0

  • Plant hideouts (tree trunks, tree feet, rocks), finds in crypts and caves, mod food in world chests, forager's caches, magpie nests and lucky finds while picking.
  • Food and spawn balance pass.

v0.4.0

  • Hildir, legendary tools, varietal honey, recipe scrolls, kitchen decor, Hugin tips, balanced spawns.

v0.3.0

  • Stations (clay oven, hand quern), seed pouch, chef's hat, 50 meads, Leviathan finds, fish dishes, biome feasts, over 400 items.

v0.2.0

  • First content for every biome.

v0.1.0

  • Wild leek and wild leek soup.
