Staffs of Fracturing
Craft three gemstone variants of the Staff of Fracturing, each with its own damage, crown effects and twelve-ball fracture pattern. Requires Ashlands equipment and materials.
Choose a staff
| Staff | Main effect | Default additional effects |
|---|---|---|
| Iolite | Lightning fracture balls | 25% chance to chain an enemy hit to the nearest other enemy within 8 m. Each pair of balls has a 25% chance to form a lightning link, up to 24 links per shot. |
| Jade | Blunt and poison explosions | Each 3.5 m blast leaves a 5-second haze. Nearby enemies receive a 20% immobilization roll each second. Overlapping areas on the same casting client share a per-target check cooldown. |
| Bloodstone | Blunt explosions on first contact | Each 2.25 m blast launches five piercing shards. Default shard speed is 56 m/s with a 1.6-second lifetime. Shards can be blocked or dodged and do not fracture again. |
Iolite balls have twice the vanilla secondary projectile's natural lifetime; impacts can still end them sooner. A lightning link damages enemies intersecting its segment when it forms. Its brief visual does not continue checking newly crossing enemies.
Extra chains, shards and poison haze require the caster to remain loaded in the world. Those additional effects can stop after the caster despawns, such as when leaving the world or completing respawn. The projectile's native impact damage is handled separately.
Core damage gains 25% of its configured base value for each quality level above 1. Existing game combat rules and target resistances still apply.
Crafting and upgrades
Craft at a level 2 Galdr table after discovering the required materials.
| Variant | Base staff | Metal | Gemstone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iolite | 1 Staff of Fracturing | 5 Flametal | 1 Iolite |
| Jade | 1 Staff of Fracturing | 5 Flametal | 1 Jade |
| Bloodstone | 1 Staff of Fracturing | 5 Flametal | 1 Bloodstone |
Upgrades require additional Flametal and the matching gemstone through the normal increasing upgrade costs. Use the staff's normal casting controls.
Installation and multiplayer
Install with a Thunderstore-compatible mod manager and these dependencies:
- BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350+
- Jotunn 2.30.0+
The server and every client must install the same Staffs of Fracturing version. For manual installation, copy StaffsOfFracturing.dll to BepInEx/plugins. Replace the previous DLL and keep only one copy when updating.
Configuration and appearance
Server administrators control synchronized settings for chain chances, damage, ranges, cooldowns, poison duration and immobilization, and Bloodstone shard count, speed and lifetime.
Bloodstone speed is ShrapnelVelocity × ShrapnelSpeedMultiplier; defaults are 28 × 2 = 56 m/s. Changing the multiplier does not change shard lifetime.
The staff crowns have blue-white Iolite arcs, green Jade haze, and red Bloodstone drips and pointed particles. Decorative crown particles cause no damage. The original shaft, grip and lower materials are retained.
Compatibility
Maintenance release 1.0.5 rebuilds against Valheim 1.0.16, Jotunn 2.30.2 and BepInExPack 5.4.2351. It clarifies the description, including when lightning links apply damage. Existing recipes, item IDs, balance and projectile appearance are retained.
Startup and registration checks have passed; compiler/API checks also verify the current Projectile.Setup hook. Final crown appearance, every combat interaction and remote effect timing have not been exhaustively tested. See VALIDATION.md in the source archive for evidence and limits.
Credits and license
Built with Jotunn and Harmony. Uses cloned native Valheim assets at runtime. MIT license; see LICENSE and THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md. No game assets or dependency DLLs are included.
CHANGELOG
Changelog
1.0.5 - 2026-10-01
- Restore the SDK project and rebuild against Valheim 1.0.16, Jotunn 2.30.2 and BepInExPack 5.4.2351.
- Verify the current Projectile.Setup patch and external runtime API references, and review Jotunn registration/multiplayer contracts against its GitHub source.
- Clarify installation and staff effects. Lightning links damage enemies intersecting the segment when it forms; the visual does not check enemies crossing later.
- Preserve recipes, save identifiers, gameplay balance and existing crown/projectile appearance.
1.0.4 — 2026-09-12
- Add blue-white Iolite crown coloration with compact crackling arcs and sparks.
- Add Jade crown coloration and a small drifting poison haze around the top.
- Add a blood-red Bloodstone crown, subtle drips and floating pointed decorative particles around the top.
- Preserve the vanilla shaft, grip, bottom, lower gemstones and original model shape.
- Retain all 1.0.3 gameplay, compact fast Bloodstone fragments, instant Bloodstone ball impacts, doubled electric-ball lifetime, recipes, settings and package photo.
- Integrate the completed staff handoff and verify the release build, API compatibility and package contents. In-game visual validation remains pending.
1.0.3 — 2026-09-12
- Double Bloodstone shrapnel launch speed by default, from 28 to 56 metres per second. Add a synchronized speed multiplier so the increase also applies to existing configurations; 1.5 selects a 50% increase.
- Compensate motion-dependent shrapnel visuals to retain the compact red fragments introduced in 1.0.2 at the higher speed.
- Double Iolite secondary balls' natural flight lifetime. Primary timing, impact behavior, web-link chances, damage and link duration are retained.
- Keep Bloodstone's first-contact detonations, fragment flight lifetime and damage, Jade behavior, crafting recipes and package artwork.
- Rebuild against Valheim 1.0.12. See VALIDATION.md for build/API checks and the remaining in-game validation limits.
1.0.2 — 2026-09-11
- Make Bloodstone shrapnel particles 35% of their previous size, with substantially shorter motion stretch and trails. Visual particle lifetime and trail duration are 25% of their previous settings.
- Disable terrain bouncing on Bloodstone fracture balls so the native explosion and shrapnel callback run on the first terrain or enemy impact. Remove the spent ball immediately after impact.
- Preserve shrapnel launch speed, projectile lifetime, gravity, drag, collision radius, count, damage and red appearance. Iolite and Jade behavior is unchanged.
- Rebuild against the same Valheim 1.0.12 assemblies. Compilation, metadata checks and comparison of the unchanged shrapnel flight/damage instructions passed; final visuals and impact behavior still need an in-game check.
1.0.1 — 2026-09-11
- Rebuilt against Valheim 1.0.12 and updated dependencies to BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350 and Jotunn 2.30.0.
- Require Jotunn 2.30.0 or newer when loading the plugin.
- Pin the projectile setup patch to the verified six-argument signature and bind its arguments by position.
- Update build-path detection for current client/server folders and common Jotunn installation layouts.
- Resolve explicit game runtime references without importing unrelated Mono framework dependency conflicts into the build.
- Preserve the three staff mechanics, damage values, recipes, configuration keys, item identifiers and current package icon.
- Add a reproducible metadata compatibility audit. Compilation and API checks passed; in-game testing on 1.0 is still pending.
1.0.0 — 2026-08-25
- Added Iolite, Jade and Bloodstone variants of the Staff of Fracturing.
- Added bounded lightning chaining and same-shot lightning webs.
- Added owner-authored poison detonations, lingering haze and overlap-safe immobilization checks.
- Added blunt Bloodstone detonations and non-recursive piercing shrapnel.
- Added synchronized, server-authoritative balance configuration.
- Added Galdr table crafting and upgrade recipes, English localization, custom VFX styling and an original package icon.
- Added dedicated-server-safe content registration and strict client/server version compatibility.
