README

Hearthkeeper

Version 1.0.0

Hearthkeeper is an inventory, storage, equipment, and base-supply utility for Valheim.

It expands Valheim's normal storage and inventory systems with automatic storage, chest consolidation, Restock, nearby crafting supplies, livestock feeding, automatic refueling, configurable chest rules and sizes, visual chest labels, optional stack-size adjustments, and the optional Equips + dedicated Equipment and Extra-slot system.

Hearthkeeper is designed to use Valheim's existing inventory, container, equipment, crafting, item-use, repair, upgrade, feeding, and processing systems wherever practical rather than replacing them with separate simulations.

A quick note about updates: When I push a new Hearthkeeper build, there may occasionally be a short period where the mod disappears from Thunderstore or r2modman while the update is being processed or reviewed. If that happens, don't panic — it should return once the update is cleared.

Features

Storage and sorting

  • Store Matching sends matching player inventory items to nearby eligible chests.
  • Store All sends eligible player inventory items into the currently open chest.
  • Consolidate Chests combines matching stock among nearby chests.
  • Consolidation prefers the chest already holding the greatest quantity of each item, with distance used to break ties.
  • Sort Inventory arranges the player's ordinary inventory.
  • Sort This Chest arranges the currently open chest.
  • Optional timed automatic consolidation and chest sorting.
  • Loaded ground drops can be automatically stored in nearby matching chests.
  • Hotbar, equipped items, protected slots, reserves, and Hearthkeeper's dedicated Equipment cells are respected.

Chest rules

Each chest can have its own Hearthkeeper rules.

Available controls include:

  • Reserve — Off, one item, one dynamic stack, or a custom quantity.
  • Manual Reserve Lock — prevents ordinary transfers below the reserved amount.
  • Accept Automatic Storage — allows Hearthkeeper's automatic storage systems to deposit into the chest.
  • Crafting / Restock Supply — allows eligible items to be used for nearby crafting, building, and personal Restock.
  • Livestock Feed — allows appropriate food to be supplied to nearby hungry tameable creatures.
  • Fuel Chest — designates the chest for automatic-refueling supply behavior.

Fuel Chests are kept separate from incompatible warehouse roles such as livestock feeding and crafting / Restock supply.

Reserved quantities are respected by Hearthkeeper's automatic withdrawals.

Crafting and building

Nearby eligible chests can contribute materials to Valheim's normal crafting and building systems.

Hearthkeeper does not bypass ordinary recipe, crafting-station, DLC, ward, placement, or other native requirements. It only extends the pool of eligible materials.

Crafting range is independently configurable up to 100 metres.

Player Restock

Individual player inventory slots can be marked for Restock.

  • Left Alt + Right Click marks or unmarks a managed stack.
  • Each marked slot manages one stack.
  • Multiple stacks of the same item can be managed by marking multiple slots.
  • The default behavior refills a marked stack whenever it is not full.
  • An advanced refill threshold is available through configuration.
  • Restock can run automatically or manually.
  • If a scheduled check is skipped because an inventory interface is open, Hearthkeeper performs an immediate check after the interface closes.

Livestock feeding

Feed-enabled chests can supply hungry tameable creatures that use Valheim's normal food system.

Hearthkeeper respects normal hunger, taming, ownership, and food eligibility rules.

Feed chests are protected from warehouse behavior that would immediately take the food back.

Automatic refueling

Automatic refueling is disabled by default and configured under:

14 Automatic Refueling

Supported categories include:

  • Fires and hearths.
  • Player-built torches.
  • Kilns.
  • Smelters.
  • Blast furnaces.
  • Windmills.
  • Spinning wheels.
  • Eitr refineries.
  • Compatible modded devices using Valheim's standard Fireplace or Smelter components.

Fuel, processing inputs, thresholds, refill targets, range, timing, and per-cycle limits are configurable.

Individual supported devices can also be excluded from or returned to automatic refueling.

Chest sizes and scrolling

Hearthkeeper can enlarge supported player storage while preserving existing contents.

Default vanilla chest tiers include:

  • Wooden chest — 7x4.
  • Personal chest — 7x5.
  • Reinforced chest — 9x6.
  • Black-metal chest — 10x8.
  • Ashwood chest — 10x8.

Larger inventories use horizontal and vertical scrolling where needed.

Chest resizing is growth-safe: Hearthkeeper does not silently shrink a chest that has previously been enlarged.

Chest names and visual feedback

Custom chest names can be displayed directly on supported chest surfaces.

The labels include:

  • Front and lid placement where appropriate.
  • Distance limits.
  • Facing checks.
  • Obstruction checks.
  • Configurable size.
  • Configurable Valheim-inspired colour choices.
  • Adjustable lettering glow.

Hearthkeeper can also briefly illuminate a chest when it receives items through automatic storage.

Chest-name colour and Activity Glow colour are configured separately.

Stack sizes

Optional stack-size adjustment is available under:

13 Stack Sizes

It is disabled by default.

Hearthkeeper supports:

  • A global stack multiplier.
  • An overall maximum.
  • Per-item overrides.
  • Compact K/M stack-count display for large values.

The displayed number may be shortened for readability, but the underlying item count is unchanged.

Before disabling Hearthkeeper's stack-size feature or removing the mod, reduce oversized stacks back within their normal limits. Valheim or another mod may otherwise split, clamp, drop, or mishandle stacks that remain above their normal maximum.

Equips +

Equips + is disabled by default.

It can be enabled under:

15 Equips +

Equips + adds Hearthkeeper's own dedicated inventory for equipment and additional carried items.

Dedicated Equipment slots

The Equipment row contains:

  • Head
  • Shoulders
  • Chest
  • Legs
  • Utility
  • Trinket
  • Main Hand
  • Off Hand

Equipment cells are type-restricted. Items that do not belong in a particular Equipment cell are rejected, including invalid items that Valheim might otherwise attempt to move into that cell during an occupied-inventory swap.

Extra slots

Hearthkeeper also provides 1–8 configurable Extra slots.

Extra slots are general-purpose storage rather than equipment-restricted cells.

The default number of Extra slots is 6.

Equips + hotkeys

Dedicated-slot hotkeys are configurable under:

10 Hotkeys

Default bindings are:

  • Left Shift + 1 — Main Hand.
  • Left Shift + 2 — Off Hand.
  • Left Shift + 3 — Extra Slot 1.
  • Left Shift + 4 — Extra Slot 2.
  • Left Shift + 5 — Extra Slot 3.
  • Left Shift + 6 — Extra Slot 4.
  • Left Shift + 7 — Extra Slot 5.
  • Left Shift + 8 — Extra Slot 6.
  • Left Shift + 9 — Extra Slot 7 when enabled.
  • Left Shift + 0 — Extra Slot 8 when enabled.

Keys and modifiers can be rebound independently.

Extra slots can hold ordinary items, including compatible food, mead, ammunition, tools, weapons, shields, bows, torches, and other usable items.

Hearthkeeper routes supported actions through Valheim's native item-use and equipment behavior wherever possible.

HUD display

Hearthkeeper provides native-style HUD previews for its dedicated slots.

  • Main Hand and Off Hand appear with a compact hotbar-style preview.
  • Extra-slot contents can appear beside the Guardian Power area.
  • Configured positions remain stable rather than compacting around empty slots.

Persistence and character preview

Dedicated items are persisted separately from the player's normal inventory.

Hearthkeeper restores their dedicated positions across normal save/load and world transitions.

Supported equipment can also appear on the character shown in Valheim's character-selection menu without moving those items back into ordinary player inventory.

Dedicated equipment participates in normal Valheim equipment behavior, including repair, upgrades, ammunition handling, carry weight, death handling, and tombstone recovery where applicable.

Important Equips + safety notice

Hearthkeeper shows an Equips + safety notice on the Valheim startup menu by default.

The popup includes an option to stop showing it. The notice can later be re-enabled through configuration.

Before disabling Equips + or removing Hearthkeeper, manually move your items out of Hearthkeeper's dedicated Equipment and Extra slots and back into ordinary inventory storage.

If Equips + is disabled while items are still stored there, those items remain in Hearthkeeper's dedicated inventory but may be hidden and unavailable until the feature is enabled again.

Avoid running multiple mods that provide overlapping dedicated equipment or extra-slot systems unless compatibility has specifically been confirmed.

Controls

Default general Hearthkeeper controls:

  • F6 — Store Matching.
  • F7 — Consolidate Chests while inventory is open.
  • F8 — Sort Inventory while inventory is open.
  • F9 — Toggle automatic refueling for the supported device under the crosshair.
  • F10 — Manual Restock.

All of these can be rebound under:

10 Hotkeys

Hotkeys are suppressed while typing, using menus or the console, teleporting, dead, or in a cutscene.

Installation

Hearthkeeper requires BepInExPack Valheim.

Install through a Thunderstore-compatible mod manager, or place:

Hearthkeeper.dll

inside:

BepInEx/plugins/Hearthkeeper/

The current configuration file is created at:

BepInEx/config/MaddCatter365.Hearthkeeper.cfg

Hearthkeeper includes migration support for older configuration and persistent-data identifiers where applicable.

For multiplayer, all players should use the same Hearthkeeper version and compatible configuration.

Compatibility

Hearthkeeper is primarily designed for systems built around Valheim's standard:

  • Inventory
  • Container
  • ZNetView
  • Fireplace
  • Smelter
  • equipment
  • crafting
  • item-use systems

Completely custom inventory, equipment, storage, crafting, or processing systems may require specific compatibility support.

Avoid running multiple mods that perform the same automatic storage, chest resizing, feeding, refueling, stack-size, or dedicated-equipment functions unless compatibility has been confirmed.

Tested alongside Hearthkeeper 1.0.0 development

Compatibility and regression testing has included:

  • Valheim 1.0.20
  • Multiplayer ownership behavior.
  • Save/load and world re-entry.
  • Death and tombstone recovery.
  • Character-selection equipment preview.
  • Native repair.
  • Dedicated-item upgrades.
  • Dedicated ammunition and item use.
  • Adventure Backpacks 2.4.0
    • equipped backpack behavior
    • nested carried weight
    • storage interaction
  • AreaPickup 1.0.1
    • area pickup/harvesting
    • player inventory delivery
    • Hearthkeeper livestock feeding
    • normal processing-device operation

Compatibility with a tested version does not guarantee compatibility with every future version of that mod.

Things being tested

Hearthkeeper 1.0.0 has received extensive development and gameplay testing, but it interacts with several of Valheim's inventory, UI, equipment, save, and automation systems.

Normal post-release gameplay will continue to watch for:

  • Unusual combinations of inventory or equipment mods.
  • Modded items with custom equip or upgrade behavior.
  • Additional modded storage and processing pieces.
  • Rare drag-and-drop or inventory-swap edge cases.
  • Future Valheim updates that alter inventory, equipment, UI, crafting, or save behavior.

If you find a problem, a BepInEx log from the affected session is extremely helpful when reporting it.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

1.0.1 — Hotfix

Fixed

  • Improved compatibility with death/inventory-retention mods that suppress Valheim's normal tombstone creation. Hearthkeeper's dedicated Equipment/Auxiliary inventory now follows that outcome instead of independently attempting its own death transfer.
  • Added load-time protection for existing oversized stacks when stack-size limits are reduced, preventing Valheim from truncating saved stacks to the newly configured maximum.

Stack Sizes

  • Split Stack Sizes into two independently configurable sections:
    • 13.a Stack Sizes — general items, including materials, ammunition, equipment, tools, trophies, and other non-consumables.
    • 13.b Stack Sizes - Consumables — non-ammunition consumables such as food, meads, and potions.
  • Consumables now have their own:
    • Enable toggle
    • Multiplier
    • Maximum stack size
    • Per-item overrides
  • Added LegacyMode for consumables. When enabled, consumables use the normal 13.a Stack Sizes rules as they did in Hearthkeeper 1.0.0.
  • General and consumable stack-size systems can be enabled or disabled independently.
  • Existing Stack Size configuration is migrated forward to the new 13.a / 13.b layout.

Diagnostics

  • Expanded Squirrel diagnostics for multiplayer container ownership, storage transfers, death compatibility, inventory placement, and crafting-placement troubleshooting.

Notes

  • Multiplayer and dedicated-server stability work is still ongoing. The additional diagnostics in this release are intended to help identify and verify remaining multiplayer-specific issues.

  • Phase 2 is planned as the next major development milestone.

0.1.14 Part1-LabelSurfaces-Fix1 (2026-09-29)

  • Corrects the wooden chest front reference independently of text rotation.
  • Uses actual readable mesh surfaces, or oriented mesh bounds for protected meshes, instead of interaction colliders for label placement.
  • Attaches lid text to the selected surface transform with an independent upward-facing reading frame.
  • Preserves font, glow, size settings, occlusion, NativeAttached and all gameplay.
  • Adds internal calibration notes and one diagnostic per prefab; in-game placement still needs testing.

0.1.14 Part1-CompactButtons-Polish2-TooltipFix1 (2026-09-28)

  • Removes the alpha-hit-test assignment rejected by native compressed/unreadable textures.
  • Contains tooltip initialization/text errors while preserving button interaction.
  • Preserves Polish2 visuals, layout, wording, FloatingLegacy and all gameplay services.
  • Debug rebuild, 20 compiled wiring checks and 6 fault-injection checks pass; live test pending.

0.1.14 Part1-CompactButtons-Polish2 (2026-09-28)

  • Separates the two player buttons around the vanilla display without changing size or anchoring.
  • Warms custom chest-icon foreground to #E89928; preserves artwork and frames.
  • Standardizes all seven native mouse-hover bindings and approved short labels.
  • Debug rebuild and 17 compiled UI wiring checks pass; in-game validation remains pending.

0.1.14 Part1-Backbone3-ButtonVisuals-Test2 (2026-09-28)

  • Five approved chest-side gold line icons, replacing the copied repair foreground.
  • Native ash background/states and validated Text-body tooltips with approved wording.
  • Preserves column/flyout layout, player-side buttons and all gameplay services.
  • Debug rebuild passed; native hover/click behavior still requires in-game verification.

0.1.14 Part1-Backbone3-CompactButtons-Test1 (2026-09-28)

  • Compact square native repair-style main action buttons with icons and shortcut tooltips.
  • Chest column stays inside the panel at its inner-right edge; old oversized backing and reserved width are removed.
  • Sort This Chest moves to the main column, retaining its operation; remaining flyout controls are unchanged.
  • Debug rebuild, matching PDB and source checkpoint. Core inventory/storage behavior remains unchanged from Fix1. See COMPACT_BUTTONS_TEST1_NOTES.md.

0.1.14 Part1-Backbone3-Fix1 (2026-09-28)

  • Registers the missing inventory reservation/transaction patch class and disambiguates Inventory.Load hooks.
  • Uses inspected EAQS 3.1.3 placement predicates to refill accepted special cells without bypassing restrictions; preserves storage-removal protection.
  • Retires departed R identities so chest/world returns do not drag personal homes to unrelated cells.
  • Corrects TMP initialization overriding sizing, single-line physical sizing, inherited model scale and inactive-mesh bounds.
  • Moves per-prefab label geometry to internal constants; retains visibility/colour/modest size/range as public controls and cleans retired config keys.
  • Preserves native font, pale-blue glow, occlusion, Feed, Preserve-X, naming and scrolling. 123 logic, 12 config and 19 artifact checks pass. Live visual/compatibility/multiplayer tests remain pending.

0.1.14 Part1-Backbone3 (2026-09-28)

  • Moves L protection to persistent item identities and R to one maintained item plus a reserved empty home; migrates older marks.
  • Makes L/R mutually exclusive; moves R to top-center; adds native placement/move/swap/load guards.
  • Feed forces Crafting / Restock Supply OFF and leaves it OFF after Feed is disabled; preserves Backbone2 ground pickup behavior.
  • Hardens timed Feed exclusions at candidate, transfer and arrangement boundaries; adds automatic transfer/eligibility and optional animal-feed diagnostics.
  • Migrates Sorting config to Consolidation without discarding persisted values; adds 1.5-second manual cooldown.
  • Uses the valid native TMP font for inactive-created world text, surface placement, lid parenting, per-prefab profiles, pale blue glow, throttled occlusion and angle/distance fade.
  • Preserves shared Preserve-X, naming input, viewport and EQS integration. 114 logic checks and 9 real BepInEx migration checks pass. In-game visual/Harmony testing and real host/guest validation remain pending.

0.1.14 Part1-Backbone2 (2026-09-27)

  • Defaults Restock threshold to 100%, keeping one managed stack per marked slot and multi-chest aggregation.
  • Queues UI-blocked due scans for immediate refill on close and restarts the personal timer.
  • Renames the existing withdrawal permission Crafting / Restock Supply.
  • Removes the independent ground-pickup button; Feed OFF restores normal pickup and Feed ON blocks it locally.
  • Adds hard host checks to the timed warehouse scheduler and execution entry point only.
  • Adds per-slot Restock diagnostics and clones native TMP text for markers to avoid missing-default-font warnings.
  • Retains Preserve-X semantics; 81 deterministic checks pass. In-game validation remains pending.

0.1.14 Part1-Backbone1 (recovery checkpoint, 2026-09-27)

  • Adds the complete Part 1 module structure on top of stabilization.3.
  • Rebinds scroll callbacks across changing chest sizes and adds fixed native chest actions.
  • Adds explicit naming submit/cancel handling and chest-attached front/lid inscriptions.
  • Adds persistent Alt-click slot locks, Restock marks, a shared protection helper and inventory adapter API.
  • Adds manual/optional automatic one-stack-per-marked-slot Restock using existing eligibility/reserve rules.
  • Adds per-chest ground pickup rules; Feed forces pickup off on that chest.
  • Packaged immediately on first successful full-project compile. Runtime validation and visual tuning remain pending; no Part 2 work included.

0.1.14 stabilization.3 (intermediate test, 2026-09-26)

  • Gives wide chest grids a native-style horizontal scrollbar and correct full content width.
  • Anchors slots from the top-left instead of centering an oversized grid into a clipped viewport.
  • Reserves separate scrollbar gutters and reaches the last row and column through bounded scrolling.
  • Uses the actual masked viewport for gamepad selection visibility on both axes.
  • Restores original UI transforms when Hearthkeeper is disabled or unloaded.
  • Retains the existing chest panel footprint and all stabilization.2 storage behavior.
  • Adds nine deterministic viewport checks; 56 total pass. Live Unity visual/input validation remains pending.

0.1.14 stabilization.2 (intermediate test, 2026-09-26)

  • Replaces distance-first consolidation with per-item, highest-starting-quantity-first routing.
  • Fills matching accepting chests consecutively in rank order; distance breaks equal-count ties.
  • Keeps Preserve-X stock in its source chest, retaining its matching-item identity.
  • Allows mixed-item chests to receive one item and donate another; revisits item groups when transfers free additional slots.
  • Applies the same ranking to timed Auto-Sort, retaining its Feed-chest exclusions.
  • Carries forward all stabilization.1 fixes. Chest viewport resizing and pickup-radius mod compatibility are still pending.

0.1.14 stabilization.1 (intermediate test, 2026-09-26)

  • Includes the local open chest in manual Consolidate while keeping other players' open chests excluded.
  • Excludes Feed chests only from timed Auto-Sort consolidation and arrangement.
  • Uses native amount-and-cell transfers with actual moved-count accounting; avoids copy-first partial-transfer duplication.
  • Enforces Preserve-X in shared withdrawal helpers and avoids automatic placement into empty external equipment cells.
  • Fixes the cached text-input visibility race and protects rename confirmation/cancellation frames.
  • Adds manual Consolidate diagnostics and a distinct startup build label.
  • Retains the HUD layout; new HUD, locks, equipment, restock, search, and label polish remain later milestones.

0.1.14 Test Build

  • Restores the functional Chest Rules button beside the chest so the flyout can be opened and closed.
  • Removes the nonfunctional button-shaped Chest Rules heading from inside the flyout and closes the resulting empty space.
  • Moves Store Matching and Sort Inventory into a vertical group to the right of the player inventory so the chest window cannot cover them.
  • Prevents Valheim's inventory-close routine from responding to E or I while the chest-name prompt is active.

0.1.13 Test Build

  • Removes zero-quantity item records after protected or automatic chest removals and cleans up existing zero stacks encountered by those paths.
  • Removes the redundant Chest Rules toggle button; the attached rules panel now opens with the chest interface.
  • Blocks normal player controls while the chest-name text prompt is active.

0.1.12 Test Build

  • Fixed nearby crafting and building access so the locally opened eligible chest can be counted and consumed from.
  • Fixed AutoFeed so food is delivered through the creature's consumption callback instead of spawning a loose item that the player could pick up.
  • Fixed Reserve-protected amount transfers so a fully reserved stack cancels the transfer instead of allowing a zero-quantity move transaction.
  • Restored the internal plugin and assembly version to match the build version.
  • Replaced the package license with the MaddCatter365 Noncommercial Mod License.

0.1.11

  • Added readable Nordic-styled lettering for custom chest names displayed on closed chests.
  • Added a warm cream label color with a dark offset outline for improved readability.
  • Retained the front-face label placement and configurable display range.
  • Removed the incompatible material-emission glow call for improved Valheim-version compatibility; the receiving-chest point light remains available.

0.1.7

  • Added configurable automatic refueling for standard fires, hearths, and torches.
  • Added separate automatic fuel and input-material loading for standard processing devices.
  • Added configurable supply range, cycle interval, device budget, per-device transfer limit, refill thresholds, and target levels.
  • Added F9 to exclude or re-include the supported device under the crosshair.
  • Restricted automatic refueling to player-built, accessible, network-owned devices and eligible standard containers.
  • Made all automatic fuel and input withdrawals respect chest reserves.

0.1.6

  • Made Store Matching process the local player's open matching chest directly before searching closed warehouse chests.
  • Continued excluding containers opened by other players.

0.1.5

  • Added an optional timed automatic sorting cycle with configurable minutes.
  • Automatic cycles consolidate matching stock and arrange eligible chests.
  • Automatic sorting waits while inventory or chest interfaces are open.

0.1.4

  • Added optional Equipment and Quick Slots 3.1.2 integration through its public runtime API.
  • Protected equipment, quick, and custom slots during Store Matching, Store All, and Sort Inventory.
  • Kept Equipment and Quick Slots a soft dependency rather than a requirement.

0.1.3

  • Added Store All for the currently open chest while protecting hotbar and equipped gear.
  • Allowed the Store Matching hotkey during ordinary gameplay with inventory closed.
  • Suppressed hotkeys while typing, using menus or console, teleporting, dead, or in a cutscene.
  • Made personal sorting preserve equipped items and added Store All to chest glow feedback.
