This is an actual working fork of Aedonthorn's mod on Nexus
As of version 0.220.5 of the game, it works perfectly fine.

This mod overrides the 1–8 hotkeys and allows you to reassign them to any key code following Unity's Conventional Game Input scheme.
By default, the hotkeys are set to the vanilla values.
There is an option to hide the numbers over each toolbar item, and another option to show the new values.
Note: Showing new values depends on HideNumbers = true and will display the entire string. This may not be useful for inputs like "joystick button 0".
