This mod requires the following mods to function
denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim
BepInEx pack for Valheim. Preconfigured and includes unstripped Unity DLLs.
Preferred version: 5.4.2202README
Shield Sledding
Slide down hills on your equipped shield. Jump, press G to arm (in the air or right after takeoff), then land to start sledding. Speed follows the hill — shield tier affects durability wear, not how fast you go.
Works in multiplayer. Everyone playing needs the mod installed.

Install with r2modman
- Install r2modman.
- Pick Valheim and open the Default profile.
- Install BepInExPack Valheim if it is not already there.
- Either:
- Search Thunderstore for Shield Sledding and install it, or

Manual install
-
Install BepInExPack Valheim.
-
From the
Releasefolder, copy the ModdedWolf-ShieldSledding folder into Valheim:Valheim\BepInEx\plugins\ModdedWolf-ShieldSledding\You should end up with:
Valheim\BepInEx\plugins\ModdedWolf-ShieldSledding\ShieldSledding.dll -
Launch Valheim through BepInEx (Steam with the BepInEx launcher, or whatever you normally use).
Config shows up after the first run at:
BepInEx\config\ModdedWolf.ShieldSledding.cfg
How to use it
- Equip a shield that still has durability.
- Jump on purpose — walking off a cliff without pressing jump does not count.
- Press G while airborne or right after takeoff (changeable in config).
- Land to start sledding. By default any ground works; raise
MinimumSlopein config if you want steeper hills only.
Controls while sledding
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| A / D | Steer |
| W | Lean forward, small speed boost (ground or water only) |
| S | Brake (ground or water only) |
| Space | Jump — you stay in sled mode |
| G | Quit sledding |
| Esc | Quit sledding |
Sledding ends if you press G or Esc, get hit by a creature or player, sink in deep water (too slow to skim), die, or your shield breaks from wear. At 6 m/s or faster you can skim across water instead of swimming.
Combat & damage while sledding
| Hit type | What happens |
|---|---|
| Falls and impacts | No health loss — damage goes to shield durability instead |
| Creature or player attack | Knocked off the sled, staggered, no health loss |
While armed (after G, before landing), hits are blocked with no shield wear — you stay on your feet.
Configurable in ModdedWolf.ShieldSledding.cfg under [Damage]: AbsorbDamageToShield, EndSledOnCombatHit, StaggerOnCombatHit.
Shield wear (defaults)
All shields slide at the same speed — the hill sets your pace. Shield tier changes how fast durability drains (relative to Banded = 1.0×). Lower is better.
| Shield | Wear |
|---|---|
| Wood | 3.00× |
| Bone tower | 2.25× |
| Bronze buckler | 1.75× |
| Banded | 1.00× |
| Iron buckler | 0.80× |
| Black metal | 0.55× |
| Carapace | 0.45× |
| Flametal | 0.35× |
Modded shields use DefaultModdedWear in config, or add entries under CustomModdedWear.
Multiplayer
Movement runs on your client like normal Valheim walking. Other players see your sledding state over the network. Host and clients all need the mod installed — there is no separate server-only package.

CHANGELOG
1.0.7
- Fixed sinking into the ground while sledding (stronger terrain snap/rescue)
- Hardened sledding against rare crashes during physics and visuals
- Leaving a ramp no longer yanks you straight down to the ground mid-air
- WoodRamps is no longer a required dependency (optional companion mod, not required)
1.0.6
- Fixed multiplayer camera shake: shield-sled impact shake is local-only (no longer shakes every client's screen)
- Another Rebalancing
MinimumSlopedefault lowered to 8° (was 12); saved configs still on 12 migrate to 8 automatically- Blocking skill speed scaling works again: scales 0.80 at skill 0 → 1.7 at Blocking 100 (
BlockSkillSpeedScaleMin/BlockSkillSpeedScaleMax) for slope pull, coast estimate, and optional MaximumSpeed cap - Renamed Blocking skill scale keys to
BlockSkillSpeedScaleMin/BlockSkillSpeedScaleMaxso they appear next to each other in the config UI (oldMinBlock*/MaxBlock*names migrate automatically) - Fixed remote players' shields staying in their hands while sledding (feet pose sync via RPC + ZDO fallback; re-applies after VisEquipment updates)
- Added
MinimumSledSpeedPhysics config (default 2): ends sledding on ground when horizontal speed drops below it; skipped during startup, while airborne, and over water (set 0 to disable)
1.0.5
- Typing G while naming a map pin no longer triggers the shield-sled activation hint
- Space in text fields no longer starts a jump→G sled sequence
- Early-tier shield wear defaults doubled (wood through banded); iron and above unchanged
- Tower shields now wear slower than their matching non-tower counterparts (lower
[ShieldWear]multiplier); saved values still on the old tower defaults migrate automatically [ShieldWear]config range max raised to 10; saved values still on the old defaults migrate automatically[ShieldWear]entry order follows Valheim progression (Bronze before Bone; Banded with iron-age)- Banded shield flipped right-side up when sledding
- Tower shields centered under the player from mesh bounds (Wood/Iron/Bone/Blackmetal/Flametal — no longer stuck at the grip pivot)
- Serpent Scale, Black Metal, and Silver shields pulled back under the player
- Carapace Buckler sled orientation fixed (was sideways under the round-buckler pose); Carapace board unchanged
1.0.4
- Smoother sledding movement — feels more like normal walking/running
- Jump + G only starts sledding when a shield is actually equipped
- Fixed config options that weren't applying (friction, slope, snow friction, skill speed, shield wear, camera effects, and more)
- Speed FOV works again (it wasn't sticking before)
- Camera tilt and shake work again
- Sound effects and shield sparks work again
- Going uphill doesn't slam you to a stop as hard; FOV doesn't collapse so abruptly
- Fixed the mini-bounce when sledding on water
- Coasting distance restored after a friction fix made runs too short (friction settings still work)
1.0.3
- Fixed no damage on falls while armed when
AbsorbDamageToShieldis disabled
1.0.2
- Added
ShowActivationHintsconfig option to toggle on-screen sled hints
1.0.1
- Shield reparented to feet (equipped mesh, not a clone)
- Per-shield feet rotation (bucklers, flametal, tower shields)
- Jump + G to arm; run + G no longer arms
- Must land on a slope (12°) to start sledding; flat land blocked
- On-screen hints (MessageHud)
- Wall collision fix while sledding
- Config migration for MinimumSlope and shield wear defaults
1.0.0
- Initial release
