This mod requires the following mods to function
denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim
BepInEx pack for Valheim. Preconfigured with the correct entry point for mods and preferred defaults for the community.
Preferred version: 5.4.2351README
Cofferforge 0.2.2
Public beta for multiplayer use: the author has completed a successful hands-on test of the soft/hard lock update. Real multiplayer, dedicated-server ownership transfer and concurrent inventory access remain unverified. Back up saves and validate your server/mod combination in a disposable world before using valuable storage.
Cofferforge adds compact chest rows and direct chest-on-chest stacking, plus optional locks owned by the character that placed each chest.
Lock controls
Look at a closed chest and press Shift + E to cycle Unlocked -> Soft -> Hard -> Unlocked. The hover text shows the current state and the next action. Configure ToggleShortcut under [Locks] in BepInEx/config/SmeagsMods.Cofferforge.cfg. CycleOrder = HardFirst changes the cycle to Unlocked -> Hard -> Soft -> Unlocked; SoftFirst is the default.
| Mode | Manual access | Automatic crafting/building pulls | Automatic machines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unlocked | Vanilla rules | Normal Valheim Plus rules | Normal Valheim Plus rules |
| Soft | Anyone permitted by vanilla privacy and wards | Chest placer only | Machines placed by the chest placer only |
| Hard | Chest placer only, with vanilla restrictions | Chest placer only | Machines placed by the chest placer only |
Soft locks do not make personal chests public or bypass wards. Use an ordinary public chest when you want other players to open it manually. A player who can manually withdraw items can then use those items from their own inventory; soft locking only prevents automatic chest pulls.
Only the original placer character may change modes, and the chest must be closed. Ownership uses persistent character IDs, not display names, Steam accounts or the peer simulating a chest. Missing creators are never claimed by the first opener. Unknown machine creators cannot pull from locked chests. Locked personal chests remain discoverable by their placer's machines, subject to Valheim Plus's configured shared-ward checks.
Existing 0.2.0/0.2.1 locks remain hard locked when upgraded. The new mode is stored separately while both locked modes retain the legacy lock flag. Invalid/inconsistent mode data fails closed. Do not mix versions or downgrade with locked chests. EnableNewLocks = false prevents new locks/mode changes while allowing the owner to unlock an existing lock directly.
Supported storage and compatibility
All seven ordinary buildable chest prefabs in inspected Valheim 1.0.21: piece_chest_wood, piece_chest, piece_chest_private, piece_chest_barrel, piece_chest_blackmetal, piece_chest_grausten, piece_chest_warderobe.
Eight corner snap points allow compact rows and stacks. Rotate chests normally with narrow ends facing the aisle. Mixed sizes align at edges/corners within native collision/support limits. Walls and floors cannot use chests as structural support. Loot containers and unrelated storage are excluded. Vanilla inventories, stack sizes, recipes, costs, damage and recovery rules remain in effect.
Requires BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2351, the declared and tested dependency. Automatic access integration supports only the inspected Grantapher Valheim Plus 10.4.0.0 DLL (Thunderstore package 10.4.0). Unsupported binaries disable new locks and must not be used to protect existing locked storage. Without Valheim Plus, manual locks remain available; unrelated automatic-pull mods are unverified.
For manual installation, replace the previous Cofferforge DLL with plugins/Cofferforge/Cofferforge.dll under BepInEx. Keep only one Cofferforge DLL. No dependencies, game files, configs or private harness are included. Enable the desired Valheim Plus features in your profile. Valheim Plus is optional and is not installed by this package.
Every client and server needs matching compatible versions. There is no version handshake or anti-cheat guarantee. Unmodded/uncooperative clients may bypass these gameplay rules. Normal damage, destruction and drops still apply. Before removing/downgrading, unlock and empty chests, then dismantle upper rows or support them normally. Removing the mod removes lock enforcement and may collapse unsupported stacks.
Verification and limits
The exact 0.2.2 DLL passed 483 native checks in a closed disposable Valheim 1.0.21 world: both lock modes' normal/single-ingredient crafting and exact costs, native building requirement/consumption paths, matching/foreign machine auto-input and fuel, unknown-owner oven/fireplace refusal, wards, busy chests, modifier-first shortcut hints/actions and native input gating. All seven chest types were covered for migration and access policy. Six public types additionally passed native foreign-player open/take-all RPCs and exact-count manual split/deposit, while automatic pulls stayed denied with the GUI open. Personal-chest privacy remained intact. Existing chest placement/support regression checks passed.
Seven save fixtures and 35 normal-restart checks verified all three modes, creator identities, manual/automatic access and exact contents. Together with seven save preparation checks, this totals 525 native checks, zero failures. The same DLL also passed 1,934 offline policy assertions and a compiled-code routing audit. No production code change followed the runtime tests.
Still unverified: real two-client/dedicated-server ownership transfer and concurrent inventory races/disconnects; unrelated mods; every machine variant and production timing. The author reports that the latest update works perfectly in hands-on testing; this does not establish multiplayer coverage. Automated tests did not synthesize physical keyboard/mouse input. The local tests simulate distinct persistent creator identities within one process; they are not multiplayer proof. Building resource methods were exercised directly rather than a complete player-driven placement session. Manual split/deposit used native inventory methods, not automated physical mouse input.
Test owner/nonowner actions on disposable clients first, including changes during a craft timer and a restart. Do not treat these tests as a cross-peer inventory transaction or anti-cheat guarantee.

CHANGELOG
0.2.2
- Add configurable owner locks to all seven supported buildable chest types. Shift + E cycles unlocked, soft and hard; CycleOrder can reverse the locked-state order.
- Soft locks retain manual access under vanilla privacy/ward rules while restricting supported automatic pulls to the placer and matching-creator machines. Hard locks also restrict manual access.
- Preserve existing lock data as hard locked; reject stale/invalid state changes and retain native access, ownership and busy-chest checks.
- Integrate with the inspected Grantapher Valheim Plus 10.4.0.0 binary, including cached counts and actual consumption. Valheim Plus remains optional.
- Display modifiers first in the shortcut hint and show the next lock action.
- Retain the approved icon, MIT license and chest stacking behavior. Exact delivered DLL: 525 native checks and 1,934 offline policy checks passed. Author's hands-on retest accepted.
- Multiplayer/dedicated ownership and concurrent inventory access remain beta limitations; no anti-cheat guarantee.
Versions 0.2.0 and 0.2.1 were private development iterations; 0.2.2 is the packaged lock update.
0.1.2
- Update the package icon to the approved artwork revision, with two blue-highlighted chests and an open upper-right space.
- Icon-only packaging update. Runtime DLL version 0.1.1 is byte-identical to the tested 0.1.1 release; gameplay, dependencies and validation caveats are unchanged.
0.1.1
- Public beta: automated native checks and the hands-on reinforced-chest snapping retest passed. Multiplayer/dedicated-server ownership transfer and exact resource/refund/item-drop counts remain unvalidated.
- Reduce the chest snap layout from 18 grid points to eight corners, preventing automatic half-width snap positions inside neighboring chests.
- Stabilize automatic preview alignment on flat floors and chest tops; aim at a chest side to continue its row at the same height.
- Permit that automatic chest-to-chest row alignment without relaxing tilt restrictions for manual/free placement, slopes or unrelated pieces.
- Keep the existing chest-only support behavior, closed dimensions, inventories, costs and permissions unchanged.
- Add native hammer-preview sweep tests across compact lower and upper rows.
0.1.0
- Initial implementation: compact native snapping and direct chest stacking for all seven current buildable chest types.
- Scoped support exceptions keep walls, floors and other pieces from using chests as foundations.
- Mixed-size bottom/top grids preserve closed geometry and vanilla collision checks.
