Requirements
- BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350.
- GearAndStorage 0.5.13 or newer with its quest integration API.
- Install the same spawner and GearAndStorage versions on the server and all clients. This is not a server-only mod.
The mod manager installs the dependencies. This package contains only the spawner DLL; it does not bundle another GearAndStorage copy. Epic Loot is not required.
Hunting zones
- Each unfinished kill objective gets its own personal map circle, when suitable terrain can be found 500–1000 metres from where the quest becomes active.
- The search uses the target creature's natural biome and terrain rules. It visits nearer samples first, with 25-metre radial steps. It does not load distant terrain just to spawn enemies.
- Spawns begin only while the owner of the active quest is inside the circle, after a short streaming delay. Other players may join and fight after activation, but do not activate an inactive zone.
- Leaving pauses new spawns. Completing the kill objective, abandoning or completing the quest removes the circle and stops its spawns.
- Every spawner-created creature killed by any player inside its circle counts as one kill for that circle's objective, including stronger relatives and minibosses. Both the killer and victim must be inside. Ordinary world creatures keep GearAndStorage's normal prefab-based credit rules.
- Creatures are part of the shared world and visible to other players. A party member can kill a creature spawned for the quest owner; the kill advances the owner's quest once.
- Leftover creatures despawn after about 60 seconds without their active owner, or after wandering over 25 metres beyond the circle. Cleanup gives no kill credit or drops. Unloaded creatures are cleaned up when streamed back in.
- Live population is capped. After remote death or cleanup the conservative population record may delay replacements by up to 90 seconds.
- Zones persist with the character for the current world and quest attempt. A reaccepted quest gets a fresh attempt; old enemies do not advance it.
Difficulty in mod configuration
Edit BepInEx/config/mkova.GaSQuestSpawner.cfg, or use Configuration Manager. There is no separate difficulty menu in the game world. The server controls settings in multiplayer without overwriting the client's local file. Restart after editing configuration files.
- Easy: more basic target creatures, no elites. Up to 12 alive; batches of 3 every 12 seconds.
- Normal: mostly basic creatures with some stronger relatives, such as shamans in greyling hunts. Up to 14 alive; batches of 3 every 11 seconds.
- Hard: basic creatures, stronger relatives, larger enemies and elites. Up to 16 alive; batches of 4 every 10 seconds.
- VeryHard: mostly elite target creatures, plus one named miniboss per zone. Up to 18 alive; batches of 5 every 9 seconds.
Elites use level 3; minibosses use level 4 of an ordinary creature. They do not introduce new models or special abilities and are not imported Epic Loot bounty bosses. A miniboss is created once per zone, including if it later despawns.
Quest rewards never change. The quest JSON controls item and skill rewards. Creatures retain ordinary game/mod drop behaviour.
ZoneRadius defaults to 70 metres and supports 40–100 metres for new zones. FamiliesJson maps target prefabs to Strong, Large and Boss ordinary creature variants. Defaults cover greyling/greydwarf, skeleton, draugr, fuling, wolf and seeker families. Other targets fall back to stronger versions of themselves.
Bosses and supported creatures
Any quest containing a real boss prefab is excluded from hunting zones entirely. Boss summoning and altars remain unchanged. Putting a real boss into a family mapping does not allow it to spawn.
Land creatures with loaded natural SpawnSystem definitions are supported, including modded creatures with suitable rules. Water-only and dungeon-only targets are not supported. If no suitable point exists in the distance band, the mod reports it and retries after a minute; the quest remains completable normally.
Loaded base protection is checked before spawning. An unloaded base may not be detectable at initial map placement, so a marked area can still have blocked spawn locations when visited. Quest waves do not require the natural spawn time of day or progression key, but geographic checks remain in effect.
Quest creation
Use GearAndStorage's existing KillReqs with exact prefab names. No spawner-specific JSON fields are necessary. Place quest*.json directly in BepInEx/config/GearAndStorage/Quests/ on the server (or locally in single-player).
The package includes a Czech quest authoring cheatsheet in docs/CHEATSHEET_QUESTY_CS.md and opt-in JSON examples in docs/examples/. Examples are not automatically activated.
Validation
The original gameplay was tested by the author, including successful quest completion and cleanup. Version 1.0.2 adds shared party kill credit; live two-client verification is still recommended. Automated tests cover difficulty, distance sampling, zone boundaries, party credit, quest-attempt isolation and the real GearAndStorage kill-credit relay. Builds use the author's installed Valheim assemblies.
CHANGELOG
Changelog
1.0.7
- The server now controls every gameplay setting in multiplayer: enabled state, difficulty, zone radius, distance range, creature families, biome overrides, large-creature limits and aquatic creatures.
- Clients receive and display the server values. Local Configuration Manager edits are immediately reverted while connected.
- The network handshake requires the exact 1.0.7 mod version so an older test DLL cannot silently use different rules.
1.0.6
- Added strict vanilla creature-to-biome rules. Draugr hunts now select Swamp terrain, greydwarfs select Black Forest, wolves select Mountains, fulings select Plains, and later creatures follow their native biomes.
- Every individual quest spawn is checked against the biome saved with its hunting zone, including circles that cross a biome border.
- Existing saved zones are revalidated and automatically relocated when their biome is wrong or the configured rule changes.
- Added the server-synced
BiomeOverridesJsonsetting. Unlisted modded creatures continue to use their loaded naturalSpawnSystemrules. - Added water-zone support for aquatic targets such as leeches. Water depth and the target's native spawn rule are checked for both zone selection and each spawn.
- Fixed the failed-search notice to display the effective server-synced distance range instead of the old hard-coded 500–1000 m text. Search attempts now log their target, range, biome and aquatic mode.
1.0.5
- Changed star ranges to Easy 0, Normal 0–1, Hard 1–2 and VeryHard 2–4.
- Added reduced spawning for configurable large creatures. Defaults include trolls, abominations, stone golems, lox, seeker brutes, gjalls and large Ashlands/Deep North creatures.
- Added
SpawnDistanceMinandSpawnDistanceMaxconfiguration entries. New hunting zones use this range; existing zones keep their saved position.
1.0.4
- Fixed multiplayer difficulty mismatches. A personal hunt now uses the easier value of the server policy and the quest owner's local setting, so an Easy owner can never receive elite, miniboss or 2–4-star spawns because of a stale or mismatched remote policy.
- Added explicit log entries for the server, owner and effective quest-zone difficulty to make profile and server configuration problems visible.
- Existing hard spawns disappear through the normal zone cleanup; newly created waves immediately use the corrected effective difficulty.
1.0.3
- Fixed multiplayer hunt credit routing. A party member's kill now advances the exact quest attempt that owns the active zone.
- The killer also receives progress for the zone's target when their own active quest requires the same creature.
- Spawned creatures now use difficulty-based stars: Easy 1, Normal 1–2, Hard 2–3, VeryHard 3–4.
- Existing accepted quests and hunt zones remain valid; abandoning and reaccepting is not required.
1.0.2
- Shared party credit: a player who kills a spawner creature inside the active circle now advances the quest owner's matching kill objective. The old owner-only restriction is removed; non-player attackers and kills outside the circle remain rejected.
- The quest owner still controls activation. A party member may join an already active hunt, while leaving the zone pauses new waves as before.
- Distance behavior is unchanged in this patch: the nearest suitable sampled point in the 500–1000 m band is selected. Future versions can expose a server setting for a narrower or dynamic band after multiplayer feedback.
1.0.1
- Localization only: English, Czech and German follow the game's selected language; other languages use English for mod-owned text.
- Localized interface labels, notices and Configuration Manager labels/descriptions. Configuration keys, saved values and gameplay remain unchanged.
- Automated localization and regression checks passed. In-game language/layout verification is pending.
Česky
- Pouze lokalizace: angličtina, čeština a němčina podle jazyka hry; pro ostatní jazyky se u textů modu použije angličtina.
- Přeložené rozhraní, hlášky a názvy/popisy nastavení v Configuration Manageru. Klíče konfigurace, uložené hodnoty a herní pravidla se nemění.
- Automatické lokalizační a regresní kontroly prošly.
