This mod requires the following mods to function
denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim
BepInEx pack for Valheim. Preconfigured with the correct entry point for mods and preferred defaults for the community.
Preferred version: 5.4.2350README
GearAndStorage
Equipment, storage and selected quality-of-life features in one standalone Valheim mod.
Report a bug or suggest a feature · Browse existing reports · Player and Server Guide
English and Czech reports are welcome. Include client/server versions, reproduction steps, relevant settings and mods, and logs or screenshots.
Install the same version on the server and every client. Single-player and player-hosted worlds are supported too. This is not a server-only mod.
GearAndStorage does not require ValheimPlus, EquipmentAndQuickSlots, Jotunn or an external quest mod. It replaces selected features, not every feature of those mods. Some interface text and the generated example quest are currently in Czech; configuration descriptions are in English.
Equipment and inventory
- Equipment slots arranged around the body: head, chest, legs, cape, trinket and two fixed utility slots.
- Up to six quick slots. The first three default to Left Alt + Y / X / C, including Czech QWERTZ layouts.
- Adjustable normal inventory rows and container dimensions.
- Item stack increases from +0% to +500%, in steps of 50%. Unstackable equipment stays unstackable.
- Item weight reduction: 0%, 25%, 50%, 70% or 100%.
- Base carry capacity adjustable in steps of 50; equipment bonuses remain separate.
Chests, crafting and production
- B: quick-stack matching items into nearby accessible chests. A chest must already contain that item type. Equipment and quick slots are protected; the hotbar is protected by default.
- Crafting and building from chests: one switch and one range for crafting, upgrades and building. Materials are taken from the player first. Station requirements, recipe knowledge and placement restrictions still apply.
- Furnace feeding: optionally supplies coal and accepted raw ores from chests within a fixed 10 metres. Does not feed wood, food or refined ingots.
- Production storage: separate switches for smelters, blast furnaces, charcoal kilns, windmills, spinning wheels, eitr refineries, ordinary cooking stations, iron cooking stations, ovens, fermenters and sap collectors. Shared adjustable range, default 10 metres.
- Beehives and honey are excluded from production storage.
Production output can use existing stacks and empty chest slots. Output that cannot be stored follows the normal drop behaviour; fermenters and sap collectors wait for room before automatic extraction. Food waiting for chest space can still burn. Automatic cooking collection does not award personal cooking XP or bonus portions. Crafting devices requiring a recorded player crafter remain manually operated.
Multiplayer ownership: crafting/building requires accessible, closed chests owned by the crafting client. Production automation requires the machine and chest to be loaded and owned by the same game instance. Quick stack can request ownership and waits for the matching inventory revision. Private access and wards are respected. Open chests, gravestones and occupied wagons are excluded. Unloaded bases are not continuously simulated.
Shared building areas
Optionally connect workbenches into a building network. A new workbench's centre must be within an existing connected workbench's range. A stonecutter inside the network expands the connected workbench range, with defaults of 20 m base / 40 m connected.
The area is the union of the workbench circles. Connected station building permissions are shared; crafting recipes, upgrades, repairs and roof/fire requirements are not. Removing a bridge workbench can split the network.
Portal rules
Optional biome switches allow configured restricted items through portals. Hanging a boss trophy on the sacrificial stones can permanently unlock the corresponding biome's transport rules for everyone in that world. Killing the boss or hanging a decorative trophy does not unlock it. Item and trophy lists are configurable.
From 0.5.8, the inventory's cannot-teleport badge and tooltip also follow GearAndStorage unlocks. Server setting and world-unlock changes are reflected without changing the item's original prefab data.
Quests
L opens the quest journal. Accept one quest at a time, track objectives beside the minimap, switch quest lines and review completed quest names in a separate history panel.
After rewards are granted, an eight-second notification shows the completed quest and its rewards.
The journal includes an optional auto-accept next quest toggle (off by default). After rewards are granted, it accepts the next pending quest in the completed quest's line, including across journal pages. It stops at a locked quest or the end of the line, and does not reaccept abandoned quests. This local preference is saved in BepInEx/config/GearAndStorage/QuestPreferences.cfg, independently of server settings.
- Server-controlled JSON definitions with prerequisite ordering.
- Gather and kill objectives, item rewards and native Valheim skill rewards.
- Gather progress counts items acquired after accepting a quest; those items are not consumed.
- Rewards are granted automatically when objectives are complete and the rewards fit in the normal inventory. Missing reward prefabs or insufficient space keep the quest pending.
- Progress is stored with the character and follows that character between worlds.
- No external MMO XP integration or dependency on another quest system.
The mod generates a small example quest on first run. This release does not include a campaign or other authors' quest packs. Use exact item prefab names in your quests. Optional items from another mod require that mod to be installed.
Installation and configuration
Install with a Thunderstore-compatible mod manager, or install BepInEx for Valheim and copy plugins/GearAndStorage/GearAndStorage.dll to BepInEx/plugins/GearAndStorage/.
The first launch creates:
BepInEx/config/GearAndStorage/
GearAndStorage.cfg
Quests/
quest_example.json
Progress/
Place your quest definitions in Quests/quest*.json. Progress/ is only for optional one-time imports; ongoing progress is saved in the character profile.
The server controls gameplay configuration and quest definitions. Client overrides apply only during the connection and do not permanently overwrite personal settings. Keys and interface positions remain local. A missing or mismatched GearAndStorage version is rejected during connection.
Key settings:
Crafting.CraftFromChests: crafting, upgrades and building from chests;Crafting.ChestRangedefaults to 20 m.QuickStack.Enabled,QuickStack.RangeandQuickStack.ProtectHotbar.Furnaces.AutoFeedCoalAndOre: fixed 10 m input range.Production: eleven separate station switches andChestRange. No honey switch.Stacks.IncreasePercent,Weight.ReductionPercentandWeight.BaseCarryCapacity.Workstations.SharedBuildArea,BaseBuildRangeandConnectedBuildRange.Quests.EnabledandPortals.UnlockOnTrophyAtAltar.
Crafting/building from chests, furnace feeding, production storage and shared building areas are off on a fresh installation. Stack and weight changes default to zero. Quick stack and quests are enabled; altar-based portal unlocks are enabled. Review the settings before starting an existing world.
Compatibility and updates
Do not run overlapping inventory/equipment extensions together. EquipmentAndQuickSlots, ExtraSlots, AzuExtendedPlayerInventory and ExtendedPlayerInventory are marked incompatible. GearAndStorage refuses to start while ValheimPlus inventory functionality is enabled. Disable overlapping features in other mods as well.
Items use the native player inventory with slot metadata. Private inventory formats from other mods are not automatically imported. Move equipment and quick-slot items to normal inventory before removing the mod. Before uninstalling or downgrading, split oversized stacks to vanilla limits; older versions do not provide the same preservation on load. Back up characters, worlds and configuration before changing inventory mods.
Version 0.5.9 passed six automated suites covering inventory preservation, payments, station settings, quests, configuration sync, portal display, delayed chest ownership and optional Epic Loot material access. Automated network tests use simulated transport; compatibility with every server setup or third-party mod is not guaranteed.
Epic Loot crafting materials (optional)
When Epic Loot exposes its inventory provider API, GearAndStorage supplies nearby chest materials using Crafting.CraftFromChests and Crafting.ChestRange. The player inventory is spent first. Only items classified as Material are supplied; equipment stored in chests is not offered for enchanting or dismantling. Epic Loot files are not modified, and no Epic Loot dependency is required. Unsupported API versions are skipped with a log warning.
Crafting, upgrading and building request chest access automatically. In multiplayer, wait for ownership and the corresponding inventory data to arrive. Open, inaccessible and out-of-range chests remain excluded. Update GearAndStorage on the server and every client together.
CHANGELOG
Changelog
0.5.17
- Added recipient-aware quest kill routing for GaS-QuestSpawner multiplayer hunts. A party member's kill can now advance the exact quest attempt belonging to the player who owns the active hunting zone.
- The same spawned kill may also advance the killer's own active objective when it requires the zone's target creature.
- Existing accepted quests and saved progress are migrated automatically; players do not need to abandon and reaccept a quest.
- Requires the matching GaS-QuestSpawner 1.0.3 for the new shared hunt behavior. The author verified the two-player scenario in game.
0.5.16
- Added eight craftable coin pouch tiers, from Meadows to Deep North, with original inventory icons and a dedicated pouch slot next to leg equipment.
- Coin stacks hold 10,000 coins independently of the general stack multiplier. Pouch capacities are 10,000 / 20,000 / 30,000 / 40,000 / 50,000 / 60,000 / 80,000 / 100,000 coins. Stored coins add no weight; the pouch itself weighs 1.00–2.75.
- Optional automatic deposit for ordinary picked-up coins and quest coin rewards. Overflow uses normal inventory. Complete quest rewards still wait if they do not fit.
- Standard coin counting and payment can spend coins from the equipped pouch. Supports the native trader and Epic Loot's standard coin payment path.
- Click the equipped pouch to drag coins directly with the native inventory cursor; Shift uses the game’s stack-splitting dialog. No separate pouch window. Supports normal inventory, partial stack merging and open chest transfers. Canceled or rejected moves preserve the balance. Withdrawn coins stay in normal inventory after closing it.
- Fixed coin drags disappearing on the next inventory update when no chest is open, including after confirming a split amount. The native closed-container cleanup now preserves valid local pouch cursors; cancellation and invalid sources still clear normally.
- Removed the prototype pouch window and its input-blocking overlay. Cached Epic Loot reflection lookups instead of repeating them during tooltips and effect queries.
- Ctrl + right-click upgrades the equipped pouch at a workbench with the next tier's materials, preserving its balance. Swapping pouches transfers coins; an oversized remainder must fit in normal inventory or the swap is refused.
- Pouch contents persist with the item through saving, transfers and ordinary tombstone recovery. Full or unreadable pouches cannot be deleted with the inventory trash button.
- With Epic Loot installed, each equipped tier grants one fixed passive through Epic Loot's effect system. The pouch remains usable without Epic Loot. No boss-key checks are added to recipes.
- English, Czech and German interface text follows the game language.
0.5.15
- Added English, Czech and German localization following the game language, with English fallback for other languages.
- Localized the equipment and quest interfaces, built-in example quest, notifications, trash controls, and Configuration Manager setting labels/descriptions. Custom quest text remains authored content; configuration keys and saved progress are preserved.
- Fixed the inventory trash tooltip attempting to instantiate a missing template when hovered.
- Quest item rewards now fill compatible existing stacks before using new normal-inventory cells. This applies to coins and other stackable rewards. The complete reward waits if space is insufficient; no partial reward is granted. Equipment and enchanted/custom metadata are preserved.
- Trash behaviour and coin stacking verified in game by the author. Automated reward, inventory, quest and localization checks passed.
- Refreshed the main description in English and highlighted GaS-QuestSpawner, the optional companion that adds personal hunting zones to kill quests. It requires GearAndStorage and leaves quest rewards and normal boss summoning unchanged.
0.5.14
- Added a final inventory-layout recovery guard before the game's invalid-position item drops. Preserves equipment and overflow items after inventory resizing; skips destructive validation during character loading. Addresses the world-entry armor-drop report; the reporter's exact environment has not yet been reproduced.
- Recovering remembered equipment from a tombstone now equips it after the transfer completes, including the second utility slot and trinket. Already-worn replacement equipment takes priority. Ordinary loot and quick-slot items are not auto-equipped; native equip restrictions still apply.
- Validated production inventory hooks with real Harmony against game doubles, including repeated inventory shrinking, full inventory, coordinate-clone and fallback transfers, loading and temporary equip restrictions. The author confirmed in game that equipment worn before death automatically equips after tombstone recovery. World-entry armor-drop confirmation remains pending.
0.5.13
- Added an inventory trash button with explicit item/quantity confirmation and cancellation. Supports partial stacks; protects equipped, dedicated-slot and native quest items.
- Revalidates item identity and state before deletion; no recycling rewards.
- Added the quest integration API and per-acceptance identity needed by GaS-QuestSpawner (initially developed in local 0.5.12).
- Added deletion transaction tests. New trash UI awaits in-game verification.
0.5.11
- Fixed crafting/building material counts flickering or chests becoming unavailable when nearby players share the same storage. Reading crafting materials no longer requests or transfers chest ownership.
- Refresh nearby chest candidates every three seconds and immediately before native crafting/placement validation. Explicitly save chest inventories after consuming materials, including through the optional Epic Loot provider.
- Fixed clipped resource totals in recipe labels, including the available counts added by My Little UI. Long numbers stay on one line and the font scales to fit.
- Crafting deductions were checked in game by the author and a tester; the reported apparent underpayment was traced to clipped digits. Added exact flint-axe payment checks for materials split between the player and chests and for batch crafting.
- Temporary crafting trace logging is disabled. Existing settings and quest files are preserved. Update the server and every client together.
0.5.10
- Fixed chests remaining unavailable after a denied ownership request.
- Retry missing transfer acknowledgements using the original request ID and owner; acknowledgements can be replayed without saving inventory again.
- Refresh ready chest inventories during crafting scans while preserving the inventory revision checks.
- Added throttled chest-access diagnostics and regression tests for denial recovery and lost acknowledgements. Functionality confirmed in game by the author.
0.5.9
- Crafting, upgrading and building automatically request access to nearby closed chests and wait for ownership and matching inventory data. Manual opening is no longer required to request access.
- Added optional Epic Loot crafting-material support through its inventory provider API. Uses the existing crafting switch and range; equipment in chests is excluded. Epic Loot is not required, and unsupported API versions are skipped.
- Prevented forwarding a pending crafting handoff before its inventory revision arrives, and cleaned up invalid pending containers.
- Added checks for delayed data, untrusted responses, stale handoffs, exact item identity, material payments and operation without Epic Loot. All six automated test suites passed.
0.5.8
- Added an eight-second on-screen quest completion notification showing the quest title and granted rewards, including item quantities and localized item names.
- Added a local quest-journal toggle to automatically accept the next quest in the same line after rewards are granted. Defaults to off and is saved independently of server settings.
- Fixed the cannot-teleport inventory badge and tooltip for materials unlocked by GearAndStorage.
- Inventory display and portal passage now use the same per-item rules, reading current server settings and world trophy unlocks without changing shared item prefabs.
- Preserved vanilla permissive world/portal behavior and special quest-item restrictions.
- Added regression checks for manual and trophy unlocks, settings/world changes, mixed inventories and the installed game's inventory/tooltip patch targets.
0.5.7

- Equipment layout with trinket and two fixed utility slots.
- Left Alt + Y/X/C quick slots and B quick stack.
- Configurable inventory, containers, stack sizes, weight and carry capacity.
