TNS Music Overhaul
Have you ever gotten tired of hearing the same few songs on repeat, hundreds of hours into a Valheim playthrough? This mod is for you.
TNS Music Overhaul replaces Valheim's music with a brand-new soundtrack of 317 original songs, about 17 hours of music, that follows the world around you. A clear morning in the Meadows sounds different from a stormy night in the Black Forest. Cinder rain in the Ashlands sounds different from ash rain. Resting by your fire in a mountain cabin sounds different from resting in a hut on the Plains.

How a song is chosen
When the game is about to play music, the mod looks at where you are, whether it's day or night, and the weather, then picks a song for that moment. Each set of songs plays in a shuffled order, so you hear every song before any repeats, and never the same song twice in a row. If the weather changes while a song plays, it fades out, and the next song matches the new weather.
Each biome has music for the weather it really gets:
| Biome | Weather with its own music |
|---|---|
| Meadows, Black Forest, Mistlands, Ocean | clear, rain, thunderstorm |
| Swamp | rain (it never stops) |
| Mountain | snow, blizzard |
| Plains | clear, rain |
| Deep North | clear, snow, blizzard |
| Ashlands | ash rain, cinder rain, mist, storm |
| The boiling sea | sea storm |
All of it comes in a day and a night version. Resting at your base plays music for the biome you built in, following the same weather and time of day, and sailing uses the Ocean music. At sunrise and sunset, one of the short transition pieces plays instead of Valheim's.
Bosses, dungeons and raids play their new music where there is some, and Valheim's own music everywhere else, until you add songs of your own (see Customizing). Dungeon music plays from the moment you step inside until you leave, as one continuous piece, even in Frost Caves, where the game itself only plays music now and then in certain rooms.
What stays the same
Valheim still decides when music starts, so the game keeps its familiar pacing, with one
exception: vanilla can leave you in silence for a long while, for example after you step out of
your base. The mod caps that wait at 60 seconds by default (MaxSilenceSeconds).
These keep Valheim's original music until you add songs of your own:
- The other bosses: Moder, Yagluth, The Queen, Fader and the Deep North's boss.
- Raids, and the dungeons without new music yet.
- Traders, camps, towers and ruins, which play their music from the world around them.
- Combat.
Installation
With a mod manager (recommended)
Install Music Overhaul by TrueNativeStudio with r2modman, Gale or the Thunderstore Mod Manager. That's it. BepInEx is installed for you.
By hand
- Install BepInExPack Valheim.
- Copy the contents of the download's
pluginsfolder (TNSMusicOverhaul.dlland the wholeMusicfolder) intoValheim/BepInEx/plugins/TNS-Music-Overhaul/. Keep the folders insideMusicas they are, since they decide when each song plays.
Client-side only
This mod only changes the music you hear. Everything happens on your own computer:
- Servers don't need it. It works on any server, vanilla or modded, dedicated or hosted.
- Friends don't need it. Everyone else in your game keeps their own music, whether or not they have the mod.
- It's safe to add or remove at any time. It doesn't touch your world or character saves.
Recommended: turn on Continuous Music
Unless Continuous music is on, Valheim goes quiet after each song and waits before starting the next. To hear the soundtrack properly, turn on Continuous music in Valheim's audio settings. With it on, the next song starts as soon as one ends.
The mod works either way. This setting only decides how much music you hear.
Customizing
Your music folder
All the music lives in one place, next to Valheim's own save files, and everything you do there survives mod updates:
C:\Users\<you>\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\TNS-MusicOverhaul
AppData is a hidden folder. To open it quickly, paste
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\TNS-MusicOverhaul into File Explorer's address
bar.
The first time you run the mod, it copies its own songs there. After that the folder is yours:
- Add songs. Drop
.oggor.wavfiles into the folder for the moment you want them to play, then restart the game. Other formats such as.mp3need converting first; the log names any it finds. - Remove songs. Delete the files. They stay gone, and updates won't bring them back.
- Updates add new songs and leave everything else alone.
File names don't matter; the folder decides when a song plays. When a folder holds several songs, one is picked at random each time.

Empty folders never leave you in silence:
- A weather folder borrows another weather's songs from the same biome and time of day, then falls back to Valheim's music.
- An Ashlands folder borrows the ash rain songs, the everyday weather there.
- A home folder uses
HomeRest\Fallback, then Valheim's own home music. - Everything else plays Valheim's own music for that place.
Raids: Valheim gives every raid one of four levels of music, and Tier1 to Tier4 replace
those levels. A folder in Raids named after a single raid, such as foresttrolls, plays for that
raid only. Raid songs loop for as long as the raid lasts.
Places: traders, camps, towers and ruins play their music from the world, so the game still
decides when it starts, how far it carries and how it fades. Extra holds lesser places the mod
has no songs for. With LogChanges on, the log names each place as you walk up to it, and a
folder named after a place or its music works too.
Anything else: make a folder in Special named exactly like one of Valheim's tracks. Every
name is listed in vanilla-music.txt, and every weather in vanilla-weather.txt, both in
BepInEx/config/TNS-Music-Overhaul/.
To put the music somewhere else, set MusicFolder at the top of
BepInEx/config/TNS-Music-Overhaul.cfg to any path you like, such as D:\ValheimMusic, then start
the game. Everything moves across, your own songs included, and several profiles can share one
copy. If the new folder already has music in it, nothing is moved or overwritten and the mod simply
plays from there. Mistype the path, or point it at a drive that isn't there, and the music stays
where it is, with a warning in the log.
To get the mod's songs back, reinstall the mod in your mod manager, then launch the game. The
mod only has its songs to give while they're sitting in its own folder, which is right after an
install or update; from then on the music folder is the only copy. For a completely clean start,
delete the music folder and installed-songs.txt before launching.
Settings
Settings are in BepInEx/config/TNS-Music-Overhaul.cfg, which is created the first time you start
the game with the mod. Mod managers can edit it in their config editor.

Troubleshooting
- Long silences: Valheim pauses between songs. The mod keeps each pause to at most
MaxSilenceSeconds(60 by default). Lower it for more music, or turn on Continuous music. - Still hearing the original music: check
BepInEx/LogOutput.logfor a line likeLoaded 338 track(s). If it says 0, the songs never reached your music folder. Reinstall the mod in your mod manager and launch again to put them there. Also check that the biome isn't listed inDisabledBiomes. - A song you added doesn't play: only
.oggand.wavfiles play. The log names any other audio files it skipped. - Other music mods: mods that also replace Valheim's music may conflict with this one. Use one music mod at a time.
- Wrong song for the weather: the log records the weather for every music change. Please include those lines when reporting it.

Future plans
- Music for the remaining bosses, dungeons and raids.
- Music for traders and places: Haldor, Hildir, the Bog Witch, camps, towers and ruins.
- Combat music. New music for when something is trying to kill you, without cutting in over every small fight.

CHANGELOG
Changelog
1.1.1
A round of fixes from your reports. Thanks to NeTan and Morwynd!
- Dungeons keep their own music. Burial Chambers and other dungeons were playing the biome's music instead of their own, or instead of your dungeon songs.
- Frost Caves play music the whole time you're inside, as one continuous piece. The game only played it now and then, in certain rooms.
- Every song in a folder plays before any repeats. Stepping in and out of your base, or sunrise and sunset, could make a song get skipped.
- Sea storm music plays whenever a sea storm hits, sailing or not, and keeps going when you start or stop sailing.
1.1.0
The biggest update yet: 317 original songs, about 17 hours of music. That's nearly three times the soundtrack, and it now reaches every biome, every base, three bosses and three dungeons.
Every biome has music now
- Mistlands, Ashlands and Deep North get their own songs for every weather, day and night.
- The Ashlands follow their real weather. Ash rain, cinder rain, mist and storms each have their own music, instead of being lumped into clear, rain and thunderstorm.
- The boiling sea around the Ashlands has its own sea storm music, and sailing there uses it too.
- Folders now match the weather each biome really gets. The Swamp only ever rains, the Mountain only snows, and the Plains never storm, so songs that sat in folders that could never play have moved to ones that do. An empty folder borrows another weather's songs from the same biome before falling back to Valheim's own music.
Home music for every biome
- Resting at a base plays music for the biome it's built in. A mountain cabin in a blizzard sounds nothing like a hut on the Plains, and each biome's home music grows a little more uneasy the further you travel.
- The original home songs now live in
HomeRest\Meadows.HomeRest\Fallbackplays for any biome whose home folder is empty.
Bosses, dungeons and raids
- New boss music for Eikthyr, The Elder and Bonemass.
- New dungeon music for Burial Chambers, Frost Caves and Sunken Crypts. Sunken Crypts had no music of their own before: theirs now starts the moment you step inside and stops at the door. The Infested Mines work the same way once you add songs.
- Raids use the game's own four levels of raid music. Add songs to
Raids\Tier1toTier4, or to a folder named after one raid for that raid only.
Your own music, anywhere
Folders are ready for your own songs wherever Valheim plays music:
- Every boss, dungeon and raid level, in
Bosses,DungeonsandRaids. - Traders, camps, towers and ruins in
Locations: Haldor, Hildir, the Bog Witch, greydwarf and fuling camps, Dvergr towers and dig sites, the Charred Fortress and the Ashlands ruins. The game still decides when these play, how far they carry and how they fade. - Lesser places in
Extra: abandoned villages and cottages, stone circles, and the short cue when you discover a point of interest. - Any other track in the game by its exact name in
Special. Every name is listed invanilla-music.txt.
Empty folders hold a short note on what goes there, and play Valheim's own music until you fill them.
Fixes
- Fixed: the same song repeating forever. With Valheim's Continuous music setting on, the first song picked would loop instead of moving on through the folder. Thanks to Morwynd for the report and the log that tracked it down. Now the next song starts as soon as one ends.
- Boss, dungeon and raid songs play at full volume. They took on the much quieter volume the game uses for its own boss music.
- Silences are as short as
MaxSilenceSecondssays. They could run about twice as long before.
If you're updating from 1.0.x
- Your music moves to a new home, next to Valheim's own saves:
AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\TNS-MusicOverhaul. It moves on its own the first time you launch, your own songs included. If you pointedMusicFoldersomewhere yourself, it stays there. - Mistlands and Ashlands are switched on. If you'd still rather hear their original music, add
them to
DisabledBiomes. - Songs you put in the old Ashlands folders (
ClearDay,RainyNightand so on) keep playing whenever the new weather folders are empty. - The old general home folders (
HomeRest\ClearDayand so on) aren't used anymore. The same songs now live inHomeRest\Meadows, so you can delete the old ones. - Folders for weather a biome never gets (like
Mountain\ClearDayorSwamp\ThunderstormNight) aren't loaded anymore, which saves memory. The mod's own songs from them are already reinstalled in the right folders, and the log names any of these folders that still have songs, so you can move your own and delete the rest. - The raid
Tierssetting is gone. Raids follow the game's own levels now.
1.0.5
Your music can live wherever you want now. Thanks to YaBoiN8 for pointing out that 400 MB of songs in the config folder makes mod manager profile exports and syncing painful.
Choose where your music lives
There's a new setting at the very top of BepInEx\config\TNS-Music-Overhaul.cfg:
MusicFolder = ...\BepInEx\config\TNS-Music-Overhaul\Music
Point it anywhere, say D:\ValheimMusic, and restart the game. Put it outside your profile and
exports and syncing get small again, and several profiles can share one copy. Leave it alone and
nothing changes.
Safe to get wrong
- Your songs come with it. The whole folder moves, not just the mod's own songs.
- Nothing is overwritten. If the new folder already has music, both are left alone and the mod plays from the new one.
- Typos are harmless. A path that can't be used leaves your music where it is and writes a warning to the log.
Also in this update
- The config file is tidier: the folder setting sits at the top,
LogChangesmoved to[Troubleshooting], and settings left over from older versions are cleared out.
1.0.4
If this update deleted music you added yourself, I'm sorry. Updating replaces the whole mod folder, so anything inside it was lost and can't be recovered. It won't happen again.
Your music has a new home
All music now lives in BepInEx\config\TNS-Music-Overhaul\Music, a folder mod managers never
touch. The first time you launch, the mod copies its songs there and clears out the old folder.
That folder is yours
- Add songs. Drop
.oggor.wavfiles into the right folder and restart. - Delete songs. They stay gone, and updates won't bring them back.
- Updates only add new songs and leave everything else alone.
- Want the original songs back? Reinstall the mod in your mod manager, then launch.
1.0.3
- Night music in the Meadows. Valheim has no music of its own there at night, so these songs never got the chance to play. Now they do, and the same goes for any other moment the game left silent. Dungeons and crypts keep their quiet.
- Fewer long silences. Stepping out of your base no longer leaves you in minutes of silence.
The next song starts within 60 seconds, adjustable with
MaxSilenceSeconds(0 keeps Valheim's own pacing, which waits 5 to 8 minutes). - Cleaner log output: no more mentions of sailing music while you're on land.
1.0.2
- A Discord server for bug reports, questions and song suggestions, linked from the mod's page.
1.0.1
- Fixed: installing through a mod manager loaded no songs, so you got Valheim's own music with
the sunrise and sunset pieces missing. The mod manager was flattening the
Musicfolder. Update and the whole soundtrack plays as intended.
1.0.0
- First release: 112 original songs, over 5 hours of music. Every biome gets its own music for day and night in clear, rainy and stormy weather, plus new music for sailing, resting at your base, and sunrise and sunset.
