LevelAtFeet
Fixes the hoe's Level Ground tool so it actually flattens terrain to the height you're standing at — even next to rocks, cliffs, or steep drops, where it normally gets stuck. Can also raise the game's hidden, permanent limit on how much terrain height can ever change.
The problem this solves
Vanilla "Level Ground" aims at whatever point is right under your cursor. That point shifts slightly with every click, so the ground never quite settles at one flat height — especially near obstacles. Two more vanilla quirks make it worse:
- Near a rock or cliff, the game can silently treat your click as "invalid" — nothing happens, no error message, you just keep clicking for nothing.
- Every point of terrain has a hidden, permanent limit on how far it can ever move from its original height. Once a deep pit or tall mound hits that limit, no tool can move it any further — ever. That's by design, not something more clicking fixes.
Features
- Levels to your feet — every click aims at the height you're standing at, not the point under your cursor, so clicks actually add up to a flat result instead of drifting.
- Never silently blocked — clicking near rocks or cliffs always registers now.
- Raises the hidden height limit (optional) — lets you fully level out deep pits and tall mounds instead of getting stuck partway forever.
- Resize on the fly — hold Left Ctrl (or whatever you set in the config) and tap ] / [ to shrink or grow the tool's radius (same convention as brush-size hotkeys in image/3D editors). A live circle is drawn around the ghost showing exactly how big an area will be affected, and an on-screen number updates instantly as you resize — the actual leveled area always matches what you see. The scroll wheel is untouched, so camera zoom always works normally. (Not arrow keys — on macOS, Ctrl+arrows are reserved by the OS for Mission Control / switching Spaces.)
This mod only changes terrain height. It does not destroy rocks, ore, trees, or anything else nearby — clearing those is still up to your pickaxe or axe, on purpose.
Installation
- Install BepInExPack Valheim.
- Place
LevelAtFeet.dllinBepInEx/plugins/LevelAtFeet/. - Launch the game — a config file is created automatically on first run.
Configuration
Config file: BepInEx/config/com.matviy.levelatfeet.cfg (appears after the first run).
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
LevelToPlayerHeight |
true |
Master switch for "level to your feet" + "never blocked near obstacles". Set to false to get vanilla behavior back. |
MaxStepPerClick |
1 |
How many meters the ground can change per click. Raise it (e.g. 1000) to flatten big drops or mounds in a single click instead of gradually. |
RemoveVanillaHeightCap |
true |
Raises the game's built-in lifetime height-change limit. Needs a game restart to take effect. |
MaxHeightDeltaLimit |
10000 |
The new limit, in meters, when the setting above is on. |
RadiusScrollEnabled |
true |
Lets you resize the tool by holding the key below and pressing ] / [. |
RadiusScrollKey |
LeftControl |
The key to hold while pressing ] / [ to resize. Change it here to whatever you like (LeftAlt, LeftShift, CapsLock, etc.) — this no longer uses the scroll wheel, so any key works fine, Shift included. |
RadiusScrollStep |
0.5 |
How many meters the radius changes per ] / [ press. |
RadiusScrollMin / RadiusScrollMax |
1 / 20 |
The smallest and largest radius you can scroll to. |
About
I made this for my own world and my brother's, mainly to stop fighting with lumpy building sites near rock outcrops — sharing it in case it's useful to anyone else.

BepInExPack Valheim.
- Закинь
LevelAtFeet.dllуBepInEx/plugins/LevelAtFeet/. - Запусти гру — файл конфігу створюється сам при першому запуску.
Налаштування — у файлі BepInEx/config/com.matviy.levelatfeet.cfg після першого запуску.
CHANGELOG
v2.4.4
- Fixed Raise Ground ("Насипати землю") not actually resizing at all — the on-screen number changed correctly, but the real mound was always the tool's plain default size regardless of what was shown, and switching tools didn't help. Now resizes for real, same as Level Ground and cultivating soil.
- Fixed Level Ground ("Вирівняти землю") showing a radius that didn't match the actually leveled area — the on-screen number/circle could reflect the grass-clearing radius instead of the real height-changing one (the two have different tool defaults under the hood). The shown size now always tracks the real leveled area.
- Fixed grass clearing actually happening in a bigger radius than what gets leveled/raised — not just a display issue, the real cleared area was bigger by a fixed amount at every size, including the default. Grass now always clears in exactly the same radius as the real height change.
v2.4.3
- Removed "remembered size" (added in v2.4.1/v2.3.12): keeping your chosen radius across putting the tool away and picking it back up turned out to have a broken edge case when switching between different ground tools (Level Ground ↔ Raise Ground/mounding, cultivating soil) — the on-screen number could keep showing your last size (e.g. 2–10) while the real, effective radius had already silently reset to 1. Rather than keep chasing edge cases in that logic, every fresh equip now simply starts at that tool's own default radius again, same as before v2.4.1. Live resizing with
RadiusScrollKey+]/[while holding a tool is unaffected.
v2.4.2
- Version bump only, no functional changes from v2.4.1.
v2.4.1
- Consolidated release. The resize/indicator work across v2.3.4–v2.3.13 tried several approaches (square mode, a pixel-exact vertex outline, a "won't-change" red/yellow outline) before settling on the simplest one that actually worked well — see below for what's in now.
- Live circle indicator showing the exact tool radius, resizable from 1–10m with
RadiusScrollKey+]/[. - Your chosen size was remembered across putting the tool away and picking it back up (removed again in v2.4.3, see above).
- Grass/texture clearing around a "Level Ground" click now follows your resized radius too, not just the tool's default.
- Fixed the indicator getting stuck on screen after switching away from the ground tool, and resizing past the min/max limit requiring extra clicks to reverse direction.
- Fixed still being able to reach radius 20 on an existing install: an old config file with
RadiusScrollMax=20saved from a previous version was never being corrected. The 1–10 range is now enforced directly by the config system itself, so an old saved value out of range is automatically pulled back into 1–10 — no manual config edit needed. - Fixed the shown radius not matching reality on tools other than "Level Ground" (e.g. cultivating soil) — the shown number could stay stuck higher than what was actually happening once you scrolled down, and only re-equipping the tool made it show the real size. The mismatch came from using the wrong tool's own default size as the reference point when clamping; it now always uses the size that actually applies to the tool in your hands.
v2.3.3
- Fixed the real reason resizing did nothing at all with
[/](and, it turns out, would have done nothing with any second key): the way the mod checked "is Ctrl held" internally required that no other key be pressed at the same time — so the moment you pressed[or], that check itself said "Ctrl isn't held" for that instant, and the resize code never even ran. Fixed by checking the key directly instead.]/[now actually work.
v2.3.1
- Fixed radius resize being unusable on Mac with the default setup: v2.3.0's Up/Down arrow keys collide with macOS's own system-wide shortcuts (Ctrl+Up/Down open Mission Control / Application Windows), so the OS ate the keypress before the game ever saw it. Switched to
](bigger) and[(smaller) — same convention as brush-size hotkeys in image/3D editors, and nothing any OS reserves.
v2.3.0
- Fixed the real bug behind "the number changes but nothing actually happens": resizing only ever updated the on-screen preview, not the actual area the tool affects when you click. Now the real leveled/smoothed area always matches the number shown.
- Changed how you resize: instead of the mouse wheel, hold the key (
RadiusScrollKey, Left Ctrl by default) and press ↑ / ↓. The mouse wheel is no longer touched at all, so it can't fight with camera zoom anymore — and any key works fine forRadiusScrollKeynow, Shift included.
v2.2.3
- Minor cleanup only (no behavior change from v2.2.2) — confirmed working via testing. Tip: if you rebind
RadiusScrollKey, avoid Shift — on both Windows and macOS, holding Shift while scrolling is commonly treated as a horizontal-scroll gesture, which means the game (and this mod) never sees the scroll at all. Left Ctrl (the default) works reliably.
v2.2.2
- Fixed the mouse-wheel radius resize actually not working. The previous two versions couldn't correctly find the tool's radius setting internally, so nothing happened no matter which key you scrolled with — this wasn't a hotkey problem after all. It's fixed now.
v2.2.1
- Changed the radius-resize key from Left Alt to Left Ctrl (still changeable in the config), because Left Alt already does something else for ground tools in vanilla and could get in the way.
v2.2.0
- Added: resize the tool's radius with the mouse wheel (hold a key + scroll). Shows the new radius on screen since there's no visual circle to watch.
v2.1.1
- Cleaned up internal debug logging before the public release — no gameplay change.
- Fixed the default step size in a fresh config to match the intended behavior (1 meter per click, gradual leveling).
- Corrected the description: this mod only changes terrain height. It does not destroy rocks, ore, or trees.
v2.0.0
- Found and fixed the real bug: "Level Ground" often failed to fully flatten terrain, especially near rocks and cliffs, because of how the vanilla tool actually works internally. This is the fix that made leveling reliably work.
v1.4.0 – v1.9.0
- Added stump/rubble clearing alongside rock clearing in the tool's radius.
- Raised the game's hidden height-change limit so deep pits and tall mounds can be fully leveled over time.
v1.0.0 – v1.3.0
- Initial release: levels to your feet, never blocked near obstacles, and clears rocks/ore in the tool's radius with drops preserved.
