README
Wire's Helmet Hider
Double-tap the emote button to hide or show your equipped headpiece. Hold the emote button to open the normal emote radial. You can also set a custom toggle hotkey to return the emote wheel button to vanilla behaviour.
The headpiece is only hidden visually while remaining equipped, so its armor, set bonuses and other equipment effects continue normally.
Input
By default, double-tap the emote button to toggle the headpiece and hold it to open the emote radial.
Set Custom Toggle Key to any hotkey to toggle directly with that key instead. With a custom hotkey set, the emote button is left completely vanilla.
The double-tap window and emote hold duration only apply when Custom Toggle Key is None.
Hidden state is synchronized through the player ZDO so other players running the mod see it as well.
The helmet toggle plays a quick cosmetic equip animation (0.22 seconds by default) before changing visibility. Interrupting it applies the change immediately; the brief animation is synchronized to other players through Valheim's native animation system.
Switching, removing or genuinely equipping another headpiece returns it to visible. Turn this off in config to keep the hidden state while changing headgear. Hidden/Shown state persists throughout logouts and game restarts.
Disclaimer: the code is AI-assisted since I barely know C#. Not fully AI nor human.
CHANGELOG
Changelog
0.2.4
- Fixed a console spam, oopsies
0.2.3
- Helmet-hidden state now persists per character across world reloads, game restarts and the character-selection preview. Hidden characters are stored by Valheim's stable numeric player ID in a separate file under BepInEx/config: wire.valheim.helmethider.hidden.txt.
- File format uses one bare player ID per line: 123456789. Presence means hidden. Showing a helmet or equipping, unequipping or swapping a headpiece (when Reset on headgear change is enabled) removes the corresponding entry.
- The in-memory state updates immediately, but the file is only rewritten after a successful character save (including normal logout)
0.2.2
- Headpiece toggles briefly play the shared Valheim equip pose ("equipping"), without queuing an actual equipment action or slowing movement. The actual helmet visibility change is delayed until the cosmetic animation ends; interruption by attacking or starting a real equip action applies it immediately. Short animation duration (0.08–0.40 seconds, default 0.22 seconds) before actually toggling the hide state, animation can be cancelled and does not impair any controls or movement as it's purely visual.
- Hidden state resets on actual headgear change, swap or removal by default. Disable the reset option to keep helmet hidden across equipment changes.
