Dvergr Tidier
Hire a dvergr to keep your base's chests sorted. You feed him coins, he does the hauling.
What it does
Build a Dvergr Payment Chest and feed it coins. A dvergr shows up, walks your base and sorts every chest within 20 m, carrying the loads himself. He keeps working while there are coins in the chest and rests when they run out.
Unlocks in the Mistlands. The payment chest costs 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Black Marble and 4 Iron and is built near a Black Forge. Running costs: 1 coin per stack sorted.
- Sorts by category. Wood with wood, ores and metals together, hides with hides, weapons, armor, food, meads, trophies and so on (17 groups). Each chest is assigned to a group and keeps that job, so items don't get shuffled back and forth.
- Lets you decide where things go. Every chest in range of a payment chest gets a padlock button. Lock a chest and the item types in it become its filter: those items always go there and stay there. Anything else that ends up in a locked chest gets carried to where it belongs. Any unlocked chest then works as an intake chest. Dump your loot in one by the door and it gets put away.
- Carries things for real. He picks items up, puts his crossbow away and carries the load in his arms. You can take it from him with E, and he'll grumble and drop it.
- Plans ahead. If an item's chest is full of the wrong things, he takes those out first. Swaps and longer chains of moves are handled.
- Finds his way. He builds his own walking map of your base from what you can actually walk on, including stairs, upper floors, cellars and doorways. It doesn't rely on Valheim's creature pathfinding, which often fails inside bases. He opens doors (and closes them behind him), hops over stair lips, and teleports back to the payment chest if he ever gets stuck. The map is built in the background so the game doesn't hitch.
- Costs coins. 1 coin for each stack he delivers to its final chest. Shuffling items around to make room and putting things back are free. The chest holds up to 999 coins.
- Never loses anything. Every move puts the item in its destination before removing it from where it was. If he's interrupted, whatever he's carrying is saved and put back into a chest.
How to use it
- Reach the Mistlands. The Dvergr Payment Chest appears in the hammer's Misc tab once you've found its materials: 10 Yggdrasil wood, 10 black marble and 4 iron, built near a black forge. (Both are configurable.)
- Feed it coins: E adds 10, hold E fills it fast (about 10 seconds to full), Shift+E adds all your coins.
- A dvergr arrives and starts sorting the chests within 20 m. He checks for new work every 30 seconds.
- Optional: open a chest in range and click the padlock to lock in what that chest is for.
Your chests stay normal: you can open them, take things out and put things in as usual, locked or not. To keep a chest out of sorting entirely, put a sign within 1.5 m of it with #nosort in the text.
Installation
Install with r2modman or the Thunderstore Mod Manager; BepInExPack Valheim is installed automatically as a dependency. No Jötunn needed.
Manual install: put DvergrSorter.dll in Valheim\BepInEx\plugins\DvergrSorter\.
Multiplayer: every player and the dedicated server need the mod, all on the same version. The dvergr and the payment chest are shared world objects.
Like other mods, this marks your game as modded, as Iron Gate asks of mod authors.
Settings
BepInEx\config\com.chase.dvergrsorter.cfg (r2modman: Config editor)
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| SortRadius | 20 | How far around the payment chest he sorts, in metres |
| CoinsPerStack | 1 | Coins per stack delivered |
| RescanSeconds | 30 | How often he checks for new work |
| WalkToChests | true | Turn off for instant sorting with no walking (still costs coins) |
| CloseDoorsBehind | true | Close the doors he opened |
| UnreachableRetryMinutes | 3 | How long to skip a chest he couldn't reach |
| HeldItemScale | 2 | Size of the item he carries (capped at 1.2 m) |
| ItemBlocklist | Items he should never move, e.g. $item_coins |
|
| ChestRecipe / CraftingStation | Mistlands materials, black forge | What the payment chest costs and where it's built |
Custom groups: edit BepInEx\config\DvergrSorter.groups.txt to change the categories. Each line is a group name followed by item types and/or name patterns. Changes apply on his next round, no restart needed.
Console commands
Press F5 (start the game with -console). These aren't cheats and don't need devcommands.
dsort plan show what would move, without moving anything
dsort homes list which chest holds which group
dsort rehome reassign chest groups from scratch
dsort grid save a picture of his walking map to BepInEx\dsort_grid.png
dsort come make the dvergr walk to you (pathing test)
dsort forget clear his list of unreachable chests
dsort cleanup remove leftover dvergr ("cleanup all" keeps only the nearest chest's)
Known limitations
- Group sorting is based on item names and types; a few odd items may land in "Other materials". Fix them in the groups file.
- He can't use ladders or portals, and won't jump gaps. If you can't walk there, neither can he.
- Very large SortRadius values (40 m and up) make the map take longer to build. It runs in the background, but he'll walk the old way until it's ready.
- Tested on a dedicated server with one player. Several players using the same chests at once should be safe (nothing is ever deleted), but hasn't been tested much yet. Bug reports welcome.
Compatibility
Should work alongside most mods. Mods that change how chests or inventories work (extra container sizes, auto-stacking, crafting from containers) haven't been tested.
CHANGELOG
Changelog
1.2.5
- Fixed an extra dvergr turning up at the payment chest after every server restart. The game renumbers its objects each time a world loads, so the chest and its dvergr lost track of each other: the chest summoned a new one and the old one never left. They now remember each other by a saved key that survives restarts. Leftover dvergr from older versions are picked up automatically: one stays on as the chest's dvergr, and any others are sent away.
- The chest waits a few seconds after loading before it summons anyone, so a dvergr that is still loading in isn't replaced.
- Works on bases that move, such as one built on the back of Lyngbakr. The dvergr now plans his walking map and routes relative to what the chest is built on, so they move with it. Before, he kept rebuilding his map and walked to spots that had already moved away.
1.2.3
- Fixed players and creatures near a sorter base skidding, freezing or falling through the ground. When the dvergr dismissed itself (for example after a server restart), an error in that same update could stall the game's physics for every character until you relogged.
1.2.1
- Initial release.
