README

GooCosmetics

Give your gear the look of items you have collected. Choose its model and particles separately. Keep its stats, upgrades, durability, and enchantments. No items are consumed.

Apply an illusion

  1. Open your inventory or a storage chest, away from crafting stations and other menus.
  2. Hover over your gear and press T. Press T over empty space to open the window with an empty Your item slot.
  3. Drag an item into Appearance, or use its Collection button to choose a saved look.
  4. Choosing an appearance also places its particles in Particles. Optionally choose a different source there.
  5. Click Apply Illusion.

Both donor slots start with a dimmed picture of your original item. Choosing a different donor shows its picture normally. Drag another item into a slot to replace the selection.

Collections

Your character remembers gear that passes through their inventory, even after selling, losing, or storing it. Pick up older stored gear to add it.

The appearance collection shows matching looks. The particle collection shows matching weapons you have obtained that have particles or lights. Particle donors follow the same type and attack checks as appearance donors.

Each collection opens in its own window: 4 columns, 6 rows, with Previous and Next pages. Hover over an icon for details. Standard gear appears in progression order, followed by modded gear alphabetically.

Use the search field to find a name. Click a cell’s star, or right-click the cell, to favorite it. Favorites only narrows the results to your starred looks. Favorites are saved with your character.

Opening one collection closes the other. Click a collection’s button again to hide it. Drag any window by its title bar. Press T to close all windows. Shortcuts pause while you type in search.

Particles

The particle section appears once your character has collected a weapon with particles. Choosing an appearance places its particles here; an appearance without particles leaves the slot on automatic. To use another source, drag a matching weapon into the slot or open Collection.

  • Original particles: turn on to use your own gear’s particles.
  • No particles: hide particles on that item.
  • Clear choice: return to the selected appearance’s particles.

The Original look and Original particles toggles sit below their Collection buttons. Turning one on restores the dimmed original icon; turning it off restores the last donor chosen for that slot. Each item remembers its applied selections.

Matching and removal

Weapon models need the same type and attacks. Shield types stay separate. Armor matches the same body part. Pickaxes are supported; hammers, hoes, and utility items are not.

Hover over your gear and press -, or click Remove Illusion.

Monster looks

Enemy weapons and Fallen Warrior gear can be worn as looks too. You unlock them by picking up an item, and items picked up before installing count.

  • Enemy weapons: 18 weapons of enemies and bosses, each unlocked by that enemy’s trophy. Lord Reto’s blade is unlocked by the Dyrnwyn hilt fragment.
    • Each fits only the weapon types it resembles.
    • Enemy staffs fit staffs that cast like the Staff of Embers; the Dvergr frost staff fits staffs that cast like the Staff of Frost.
  • Fallen Warrior and Shadow gear: picking up a Fallen Warrior orb unlocks recolored player weapons, shields, armor and capes. Each fits the same items as the gear it recolors.

Enemy weapons are posed and sized for a viking’s hand:

  • Melee weapons are never longer than the longest craftable weapon of their type.
  • Bows, crossbows and staffs only shrink when clearly oversized.
  • Your weapon keeps its attack range and swing trail.

Their particles join the particle collection. Collection cells show the unlocking trophy, hilt fragment or orb. Type goocosmetics monsters in the console to list every monster look and what unlocks it.

Undo

Click Undo to reverse your latest Apply or Remove in the current character session. Closing the window keeps that undo step; loading a character clears it. The affected item must still be in your inventory and retain the cosmetic change being undone.

Settings and multiplayer

Change shortcuts, name color (purple by default), name markers, and visibility of other players’ illusions in your mod manager’s configuration editor.

Use donor icons is a toggle in the illusion window. It changes inventory and hotbar pictures immediately and remembers your choice across characters and restarts. Default: off. Enemy weapons, which have no icons of their own, show a rendered icon in Valheim’s style. It is no longer a config entry; older saved choices are carried over automatically.

One collection at a time closes the other collection when you open one. Particles follow the chosen appearance places a chosen donor’s particles in Particles. Both are in the configuration’s Illusion window section and on by default. Type goocosmetics window in the console to show or switch them.

Allow mixing of unknown types lets unclassified weapons exchange looks and particles after the usual checks. Known types and equipment positions stay separate. Default: off. Disabling it keeps existing illusions visible.

Other players need the same mod version to see your illusions. Players without it see your original gear. Illusions also appear on your character in the main menu.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

0.0.3

  • Added monster looks:
    • 18 enemy and boss weapons, unlocked by picking up that enemy's trophy (Lord Reto's blade by the Dyrnwyn hilt fragment).
    • 50 Fallen Warrior and Shadow recolors of player gear, unlocked by picking up either Fallen Warrior orb.
    • Trophies and orbs picked up before installing count.
  • Enemy weapons fit only the weapon types they resemble:
    • Enemy staffs fit staffs that cast like the Staff of Embers; the Dvergr frost staff fits staffs that cast like the Staff of Frost.
    • They are posed and resized for a viking's hand, keep your weapon's swing trail and attack range, and their particles join the particle collection.
  • With Use donor icons on, items dressed in an enemy weapon show a rendered icon in Valheim's icon style. Collection cells show the unlocking trophy, hilt fragment or orb.
  • Added Illusion window settings, both on by default:
    • One collection at a time: opening one collection closes the other.
    • Particles follow the chosen appearance: choosing a donor also fills Particles with it.
  • Added the goocosmetics monsters and goocosmetics window console commands.
  • Removed the character preview; Undo remains.
  • Fixed clicking a collection cell's star, which did not favorite the look.
  • Button labels now always use Valheim's orange instead of sometimes turning grey.

0.0.2

  • Added a character collection that remembers acquired appearances after the donor item is sold, lost, destroyed, or stored.
  • Added separate appearance and particle collections with 4 columns, 6 rows, paging, name search, favorites, and progression ordering.
  • Added independent particle donors, with the same type and attack compatibility checks as appearance donors. Particles follow the selected appearance by default; the particle section hides when the character has no collected particle weapons.
  • Added Original look and Original particles toggles, dimmed original-item placeholders, and restoration of the last donor selected in the open editor.
  • Added a rotatable, zoomable character preview with Original/Selected comparison and one-step Undo for Apply and Remove.
  • Moved Use donor icons into the illusion window as an immediate, persistent client preference. Existing config choices migrate automatically and the old config entry is removed.
  • Added an opt-in setting for compatible unclassified weapon types while preserving known type and equipment restrictions.
  • Refined the inventory-style interface, separate draggable collection panels, and blocked-interface handling.

  • Added Apply/Remove controls, original-particle preservation, particle hiding, and saved per-item cosmetic choices.
  • Added optional donor icons, name colors and markers, and visibility controls for other players' illusions.
  • Supported equipped and main-menu character appearances, with original gear shown to players without the mod.
