README

EtherPets

A little pet that follows you around WEBFISHING: a wolf, a cat or a raccoon, in colours you pick. It keeps up with you at any speed, waits beside you, and settles down when you stand still for a while. Works on any server.

The pets

  • Wolf: trots after you, lies down beside you when you sit, gives a happy whine when petted and answers your bark with a short howl.
  • Cat: hops into your lap and curls up when you sit, purrs when petted and meows back at you.
  • Raccoon: doesn't walk, it rolls after you in little somersaults. When you sit it climbs up and drapes itself over your head. It chatters when petted and when you bark.

Using it

Press P or click the paw button (drag it anywhere, it remembers where) to open the pet menu:

  • Wolf / cat / raccoon buttons pick your pet.
  • Show my pet turns it on and off.
  • Answer when I bark: your pet answers your bark or meow (modded species too). Wait sets how long it waits before answering again, from 15 seconds to 10 minutes.
  • Size from 50% to 150%.
  • Ready-made looks for each pet, plus a colour picker for every part: fur, back, belly, muzzle, paws, tail tip, ear backs, eyes, eye shine, nose, mouth, inner ears and tongue (the raccoon's mask, face, front legs and tail rings, the cat's whiskers).
  • Type a name and press Save to keep a palette (up to 12). The palette's name floats above your pet. Palettes work on any kind of pet.

Petting

Walk up to any pet and use the game's interact key on Pet <name>. It comes over and you lean down and stroke its head, sized to fit your character, even a very small one.

Multiplayer

Your pet is shared through the Steam lobby, so everyone with EtherPets sees it exactly as you made it, and can pet it. Players without the mod don't see pets, and nothing changes for them.

CHANGELOG

2.12.19

  • Fixed: the pets menu no longer runs off the bottom of the screen the first time it is opened.

2.12.18

  • Fixed: the fox's new sounds were missing from the mod file, so they never played.

2.12.17

  • The fox's petting sound is now one smooth, continuous note with no vibrato.

2.12.16

  • New fox sounds, modelled on a real fox: a quick run of chirpy gekkers when it answers a bark and a few softer chirps when petted.

2.12.15

  • The curled-up fox sits a touch further forward on the head.
  • The fox has its own sounds: three sharp yips when it answers a bark, and a soft coo when petted.

2.12.14

  • The curled-up fox sits lower on its owner's head.

2.12.13

  • Curled up, the fox lies flat: its body is lowered and its legs and tail raised so all the bottom surfaces sit at the same level.

2.12.12

  • The fox's ears are back: rounder tips, a bit shorter, leaning apart so their bases sit on the head. (An earlier build had dropped this change.)

2.12.11

  • The curled-up fox now sits centred on your head (it was off to one side and behind), turned so its face looks out the same way you do.

2.12.10

  • The shine in the fox's eyes sits closer to the eye instead of sticking out.

2.12.9

  • Curled up, the fox turns its face inward and rests its snout on top of its tail.

2.12.8

  • Curled up, the fox stretches its neck out a little and rests its head lower, with its snout lifted.

2.12.7

  • The tips of the fox's ears are rounder.

2.12.6

  • The fox's ears lean slightly apart and sit fully on its head, with no edge hanging off the side.

2.12.5

  • The fox's front legs have an elbow now.
  • Curled up, the fox lies flat with its legs folded on the ground in the middle of its curl, and its slightly slimmer tail lets its head rest on top.

2.12.4

  • The fox's ears are smaller and sit snugly on its head.
  • Curled up, the fox turns the tip of its tail in toward its body and keeps all four legs tucked in the middle of the curl.

2.12.3

  • The curled-up fox now wraps its bushy tail round the front and lays its head on top of it, snout resting on the tail, like a real sleeping fox.

2.12.2

  • The curled-up fox keeps its ears standing up (and a little closer together, on top of its head), and its head now rests fully on top of its tail.
  • It sits flush on your head instead of floating slightly above it.

2.12.1

  • The fox's curl is reworked: it rests its nose on top of its tail, the tail tucked under its head, with its ears laid back and its front and back legs folded into the middle of the curl. It also curls up centred on your head now.

2.12.0

  • When you sit, the fox now crouches and pounces up onto your head, then curls up with its nose tucked under its tail, instead of lying down beside you.

2.11.1

  • The fox's snout is a bit shorter.

2.11.0

  • New pet: a fox. A slim body, a long snout, big pointed ears and a bushy tail with a white tip. Pick it with the new fox face button. Ready-made looks: Red, Arctic and Silver. Every colour area works like the wolf's (it also has its own neck, throat and tail tip), it lies down beside you when you sit, and it fetches the Pet Ball. It whines in a high voice and yips when you bark. Players with an older version of the mod see a fox as a wolf.

2.10.7

  • Pets follow you up and down: when you climb a ladder or ride a blue mushroom onto higher ground, your pet comes up onto it too instead of staying at the old height inside the ground. If it's ever left more than 5 m above or below you while you stand on solid ground, it pops back beside you.

2.10.6

  • Your pet waits half a second (was a second) before it runs after the ball.

2.10.5

  • Your pet watches the ball fly for a second before it runs after it, so it no longer snatches a short throw right out of the air beside you.

2.10.4

  • The ball leaves your hand when you throw it and comes back when your pet brings it back (everyone with the mod sees this).
  • No strength meter or arc while the ball is still out being fetched.
  • The strength meter fills half as fast (1.6 seconds to full).

2.10.3

  • While you hold the mouse button to throw, a dotted arc shows the ball's flight and a disc marks where it will land (only you see it). It uses the ball's own physics, so it lands right where the disc says.
  • Your pet makes its happy sound (the one it makes when petted) when it brings the ball back.

2.10.2

  • The ball is now called the Tennis Ball (no more "Microscopic" in front of its name).
  • A bar under the middle of the screen shows how hard you'll throw while you hold the mouse button; it turns orange at full strength.
  • Throws go twice as far.
  • The pet menu is back to its old width (the fetch hint is smaller and wraps).

2.10.1

  • Fetch! A Pet Ball is in your inventory: put it on your hotbar, hold it and click to throw it where you're looking (hold the mouse button longer and aim higher to throw further). It bounces and rolls, your pet races after it, grabs it, brings it back and drops it at your feet with a happy wiggle. A cat in your lap or a raccoon on your head hops down first. One ball at a time: throw again once it's brought back.
  • Everyone with EtherPets sees your throw and your pet fetching it. Players without the mod just see you empty-handed.
  • The ball is never written into your save, so removing the mod later can't break your inventory. (It steps out of the inventory for a moment while the pause menu is open and when the game autosaves.)

2.9.10

2.9.9

  • Everyone now sees your wolf lying on the same side of you. Your game picks the side and shares it (players on older versions still pick their own).

2.9.8

  • The description now notes that this mod was created with the assistance of AI.

2.9.7

  • The cat curled in your lap keeps its front paws still while it breathes.

2.9.6

  • The wolf lying beside you rests its whole belly on the ground; its back legs stay tucked where they were.

2.9.5

  • The wolf lying beside you gives a gentle tail wag.

2.9.4

  • The wolf lying beside you breathes more gently: its front paws stay on the ground, and its head and tail move less.

2.9.3

  • The wolf's Muzzle colour now covers its whole snout, like the cat and raccoon.
  • New Face colour area on every pet: the front of the head around the eyes. It starts as the head colour.

2.9.2

  • Fixed the raccoon facing the wrong way and floating far from your head (its model was off-centre in 2.9.0 and 2.9.1).

2.9.1

  • The wolf no longer leans slightly to one side.

2.9.0

  • Standard colour areas on every pet, in the same order: Body, Back, Belly, Front legs, Back legs, Paws, Tail, Eyes, Eye shine, Mouth, Tongue, Ear backs, Inner ears, Head, Muzzle, Nose.
  • Special areas: Neck, Throat and Tail tip (wolf and cat), Whiskers (cat), Tail rings and Mask (raccoon).
  • The raccoon has a back patch and ear backs; the cat has ear backs; the cat and raccoon have a little tongue.
  • New areas start as the colour they had before, so saved palettes and older versions look the same.

2.8.9

  • The colour pickers also fold away under a "Colours (N)" header, and it remembers whether you left it open.

2.8.8

  • The saved palette list now folds away under a "My palettes (N)" header, so the menu takes less room. It remembers whether you left it open.

2.8.7

  • The wolf's and cat's necks are no longer blocks: a smooth neck that tapers from the chest into the head, with a gentle arch on top and the belly colour along the throat.

2.8.6

  • The wolf and cat now sit like a real dog or cat: rump on the ground, the back legs folded with the knee up and forward and the feet flat on the ground pointing forward (they have a knee joint now), and a gentle breathing loop that no longer jumps when it repeats.

2.8.3

  • Fixed: after joining a server, other players sometimes didn't see your pet until you turned it off and on again. Your pet is now re-sent until the lobby has it.

2.8.2

  • Every part can now be coloured on its own: muzzle, paws, tail tip / tail rings, ear backs, the raccoon's mask and front legs, mouth, tongue, eye shine and the cat's whiskers, as well as fur, back, belly, eyes, nose and inner ears. The colour menu shows only the parts your kind of pet has. Older palettes still work.

2.7.5

  • First Thunderstore release: wolf, cat and raccoon pets, colours and saved palettes, names, petting, sitting with you, sounds and bark answers, shared with other players through the lobby.
