README

Photo Mode

A standalone photo mode for Banjo: Recompiled. Freeze the world, move the camera freely and save the shot as a PNG. It works with the original characters and does not require the Tooty & Kazooie mod or Asset Expansion Pak.

Requirements

  • Windows.
  • Banjo: Recompiled 1.0.2 or newer. The standalone release was tested in game on version 1.0.2.

Install

  1. Close the game.
  2. Extract the ZIP and copy both photo_mode.nrm and photo_mode.dll into your active mods folder. On Windows, the usual path is %LOCALAPPDATA%/BanjoRecompiled/mods.
  3. Launch the game and enable Photo Mode in the Mods menu.

The DLL must stay beside the NRM. Do not enable this alongside an older Tooty & Kazooie build that already includes photo mode: both replace the same game loop. To use both mods, pair Photo Mode with the color-picker-only Tooty & Kazooie edition. Close its outfit picker before opening photo mode.

Controls

Press D-pad Down during normal gameplay to enter photo mode. Press it again or choose Done to return to the game. Entry is blocked during transitions, death and cutscene maps.

Action Xbox-style controller Keyboard / mouse
Move camera Left stick W / A / S / D
Look around Right stick or mapped C buttons Arrow keys
Raise camera RB or right trigger E
Lower camera LT Q
Move faster Hold LB Hold Shift
Take screenshot A F12 or Take screenshot button
Hide / show guide B H
Exit D-pad Down Done button

The guide also lists N64-style controls: R/Z for height and L for faster movement. The camera can travel horizontally and vertically while the world stays frozen. Audio may continue.

Screenshots

The guide hides before capture and returns afterward unless you chose to keep it hidden. Screenshots use the game's displayed client area without window borders or the cursor. Game HUD elements may remain visible.

Keep the game in the foreground and fully on screen when taking a picture. The default folder is Pictures/Banjo Recompiled Screenshots. Use Open folder to view the images or Change folder to select another destination. Your selection is saved in %LOCALAPPDATA%/BanjoRecompiled/photo-mode.ini.

Compatibility and scope

This mod replaces the game's main loop to stop gameplay updates while continuing rendering and UI callbacks. It can conflict with other mods that replace that same loop or use D-pad Down. Depth of field and background blur are not included.
