README

Neon Tracers

Bright, customizable bullet tracers and cosmetic ricochets for BONELAB PC VR, with BoneMenu controls and individual player settings synchronized through Fusion.

The effects are visual only: bullet trajectory, speed, damage, ammunition and penetration are unchanged.

Features

  • Bright green tracers by default, plus red, amber and cyan.
  • Adjustable brightness, width and short/standard/long trail styles.
  • Every-round, every-N-projectiles and last-five-rounds modes.
  • Visual ricochets with an adjustable 0–100% chance in steps of 5.
  • Ordinary tracers disappear immediately at surface contact; successful ricochets retain their glowing flight and ending fade.
  • Optional custom starting distance, with the original tracer appearance as the default.
  • Fusion synchronization: everyone with the same mod version sees each shooter's settings and the same cosmetic ricochet path.

Requirements

Windows PC VR only. This build targets Steam/Meta PC BONELAB. Standalone Quest is not supported by this package.

Fusion is required even when playing solo. The package declares its dependencies for mod-manager installation and does not bundle their DLLs. The mod was built against BONELAB 1.744.58126, MelonLoader 0.7.3, BoneLib 3.1.4 and Fusion 1.14.3. The manifest uses the current maintained BoneLib package, 3.2.2.

Installation

Mod manager

Install through a BONELAB-compatible Thunderstore mod manager with the listed dependencies. Launch using the same profile where you installed the mod.

Manual installation

  1. Close BONELAB.
  2. Install MelonLoader, BoneLib and Fusion if needed.
  3. Copy Mods/NeonTracers.dll from this ZIP into the Mods folder beside your BONELAB executable.
  4. Keep only one copy of NeonTracers.dll; replace older copies instead of renaming them.
  5. Start BONELAB and open BoneMenu > Neon Tracers.

This is a code mod. Do not place it in the AppData folder used for SDK/avatar/map mods.

Fusion multiplayer

Everyone who wants to see the effects must use v0.3.3. Earlier versions use an incompatible settings format.

Your preferences apply to your own eligible gunshots. Other mod users see your selected appearance, frequency and ricochets. Their preferences do not replace yours.

No tracers disables only your added effects. You still see other players' enabled tracers. The firing client makes the ricochet decision and supplies the cosmetic path, so viewers do not roll their own chances or choose different bounce directions. Network latency can delay remote playback.

Open Fusion player settings > Refresh player settings to view other participating players' choices. Late joiners receive current settings and see subsequent shots; already flying effects are not reconstructed.

BoneMenu settings

Setting What it does
No tracers Turns off your added tracers and visual ricochets without changing anyone else's choice.
Every round is a tracer Gives every eligible projectile a tracer, unless last-five mode is active.
Last 5 rounds in magazine Only the final five shots get tracers, counting the chambered round. Overrides every-round and every-N modes while enabled. Default off.
Every N projectiles Selects every 1–10 projectiles when every-round and last-five modes are off.
Visual ricochets Enables cosmetic ricochet flights. Default on.
Ricochet chance (%) 0–100% in increments of 5. Default 25%.
Color Green, red, amber or cyan.
Style Short (0.7 m), Standard (2 m) or Long (5 m).
Brightness 1–50. Default 12.
Width (meters) 0.004–0.1 m. Default 0.03 m.
Custom start distance Enables the optional starting-distance adjustment. Default off, preserving the original appearance.
Tracer start distance (m) 0–10 m in steps of 0.25, used only with Custom start distance enabled. Initial custom value 1.5 m.
Fusion player settings Refreshable read-only list of other participating players' settings.

Settings are saved under [NeonTracers] in UserData/MelonPreferences.cfg.

Last-five mode

For a 30-shot load, shots 26–30 are tracers. Loads with fewer than five rounds make every available shot a tracer. All pellets from one shotgun shell use the same magazine snapshot. Reloading supplies a fresh count on the next firing event. No tracers always takes priority. Turning last-five mode off restores your saved every-round/frequency choice.

Guns that do not expose a standard magazine state or identifiable source gun are skipped in this mode rather than guessing their ammunition count.

Custom starting distance

With the override off, tracers follow the original projectile-based appearance; there is no fixed numeric start distance because visibility depends on bullet speed and frame timing.

With the override on, the chosen distance places a short, detached 0.22 m starting streak in front of the sampled muzzle. It lasts 12 ms of game time, then the normal moving tracer takes over. It does not draw a continuous barrel-to-target beam or change the actual bullet's flight. The choice and distance synchronize per player.

Compatibility and limitations

  • Targets standard BONELAB projectiles and modded guns using the same system. Custom projectile scripts, detached emitters, delayed shots after release, hitscan-only weapons and rockets may need additional support.
  • In Fusion, unidentified or unheld firing sources are skipped instead of borrowing a viewer's settings. In solo play, the original behavior also affects locally simulated standard NPC projectiles.
  • Ricochets require a confirmed projectile collision. Decorative water without bullet collision geometry cannot trigger them.
  • The ricochet chance applies once at the first collision of each selected visible projectile. Shotgun pellets roll individually. This is random chance, not a repeating pattern of exactly one bounce every four shots.
  • Cosmetic ricochet paths are planned against the shooter's geometry at impact and replayed by viewers. Objects moving into that path later do not recalculate it.
  • Actual bloom depends on the game's rendering settings. The mod does not add dynamic lights or change post-processing.
  • Native game effects and effects from other mods are not removed by No tracers.
  • Pooled visuals and network buffers are bounded. Extreme fire rates, slow motion or congestion can skip effects or reduce smoothness.

Troubleshooting

  • No BoneMenu entry: verify BoneLib and all dependencies are installed in the active profile.
  • Friends cannot see the effects: confirm everyone uses v0.3.3, is in the same Fusion lobby/level, and has the mod loaded.
  • No effect on a particular gun: test a stock pistol/rifle first, and turn off last-five mode to check whether the weapon uses supported projectile and magazine systems.
  • No tracers at all: turn No tracers off and enable Every round; last-five mode can otherwise exclude most shots in a full magazine.
  • An update seems unchanged: remove duplicate/renamed copies of NeonTracers and check the active mod-manager profile.

Check MelonLoader/Latest.log for Neon Tracers, Fusion per-player sync registered, or tracer effect/network errors.

To uninstall manually, close the game and remove Mods/NeonTracers.dll. With a mod manager, uninstall the package from its profile.
