Realism — BONELAB code mod
Realism 3.3.0 is a MelonLoader DLL mod for BONELAB. BoneMenu has separate pages for Ear Ringing, Muzzle Flash, Sparks, Smoke, and Bullet Tracers.
Muzzle Flash styles
The Muzzle Flash page has an Enabled toggle and five mutually exclusive style toggles. Standard stays the original default. The other four styles deliberately use different 3D silhouettes and smoke behavior:
- Compact Burst: a bright radial starburst around a hot core; minimal smoke.
- Tapered Cone: a bright white-hot core and a long tapered 3D flame plume; more, longer-lived smoke.
- Split Jet: a brighter irregular forked flare with four branching tongues; smoke drifts apart.
- Smoke: a fuller smoke-only plume, with no flash, sparks, or muzzle light.
The separate Smoke page enables or disables the extra smoke behind the flame styles. The Smoke style emits its own fuller plume and never creates a muzzle flash, sparks, or muzzle light while Muzzle Flash is enabled. Changes apply on the next shot.
Other effects and Quest performance
Ear ringing has a separate enable toggle and 0–100% volume setting. The tone rises with nearby shots and fades smoothly. Sparks, additional Smoke, and Bullet Tracers each have their own enabled toggle.
When BONELAB exposes the live projectile, its tracer follows the projectile position and velocity. Other shots use a muzzle-direction fallback tracer. Effects are rendered locally for the player who has Realism installed.
Standalone Quest uses lower spark and smoke counts, caps the number of active sparks, puffs, and tracers, and disables non-Standard effect shadows and their brief muzzle lights, plus tracer-tip lights. Standard keeps its original muzzle mesh and light. Recoil, hand shake, and ear muffling are not included.
Map changes clear transient effects and refresh the BoneLib gun-fire hook. Effects are created at runtime and need no external assets. Bloom depends on the game's active post-processing settings.
Requirements and install
- PC/PCVR: BONELAB with MelonLoader and BoneLib.
- Quest standalone: BONELAB patched with LemonLoader for Android and a Quest-compatible BoneLib build.
Copy Realism.dll to the BONELAB Mods folder. Open BoneMenu → Realism → Muzzle Flash and select the profile you want. The check mark shows the active style. Quest quality reductions activate automatically through Unity's mobile-platform flag; performance has not been measured on a physical headset.
Build
Install the .NET 6 SDK and run this from the project folder, setting MelonLoaderDir to BONELAB's MelonLoader/net6 directory:
$env:MelonLoaderDir = 'C:\Path\To\BONELAB\MelonLoader\net6'
dotnet build .\Realism.csproj -c Release
The built DLL is written to bin/Release/net6.0/Realism.dll. The project uses runtime reflection for BoneLib and Unity game types, so it does not need BONELAB's generated assemblies at build time.
