README

Huntsman for BONELAB (Fusion compatible)

A port of the Garry's Mod "Huntsman" addon to BONELAB as a MelonLoader mod. It's a giant spider with procedural animation that crawls on floors, walls and ceilings and hunts the closest player.

The big change from the original: it kills on contact. The GMod version grabbed you, carried you to a lair, wrapped you in a cocoon and fed on you. All of that is gone. When it reaches you, lunges at you, pounces on you or drops on you from the ceiling, you die. Then it runs away for 10 seconds (fleeing up walls, onto ceilings, into gaps) before hunting again. Shooting it while it flees still hurts it, but it won't turn around. Set the time with Run away after kill in BoneMenu or FleeTime in MelonPreferences.cfg (0 = no fleeing).

Requirements

  • MelonLoader 0.7+
  • BoneLib
  • LabFusion (optional; without it the mod works in single player)

Every player in a Fusion lobby needs the mod installed.

Install

Everything (model, textures, Fusion support) is in a single Huntsman.dll.

  • Mod manager: import dist/Huntsman-1.1.1.zip (Thunderstore Mod Manager / r2modman → Settings → Import local mod). It pulls in MelonLoader, BoneLib and Fusion as dependencies.
  • Manual: copy Huntsman.dll into your Mods folder.

package.ps1 rebuilds the zip; build.ps1 -Install copies the DLL into the Thunderstore "Default" profile.

Use

Open BoneMenu, then Huntsman:

  • Spawn in front of me / Spawn somewhere hidden (12-40 m away, out of sight if possible)
  • Remove all huntsmen
  • Speed, health, damage per shot, max huntsmen, volume
  • Kill even when invincible: on by default. If the level or the lobby has death turned off, death is turned on for about 10 seconds so the kill still happens.

Shoot it to hurt it (default: 600 health, 30 per shot). Settings are also in UserData/MelonPreferences.cfg under [Huntsman].

Multiplayer (Fusion)

  • The host runs every spider's AI and sends its position and state to everyone about 20 times a second. Everyone else smooths that out and runs the leg animation on their own machine.
  • Clients can spawn and remove spiders from the menu; the request goes to the host.
  • Each player's own machine checks whether their shots hit and tells the host.
  • When the host decides a spider got someone, that player's own game kills them. After a kill, the spider ignores that player for 8 seconds (RespawnGrace) while they respawn.
  • Players who join late get the spiders that already exist.

Sounds

The original used Half-Life 2 sounds, which can't be shipped here, so it's silent by default. To add sounds, put .wav files in UserData/Huntsman/Sounds/ named after a key (hiss1.wav, hiss2.wav, step.wav ...). If a key has several files, one is picked at random. Then press Reload sounds. Keys: step chitter hiss talk pounce kill thud pain death stinger.

What carried over and what didn't

Ported as-is: the procedural animation (foot placement, tetrapod gait, planar FABRIK leg IK, body tilt, palps, abdomen), wall/ceiling crawling, wrapping around ledges, squeezing under gaps, anti-stuck handling, following footstep trails, hearing gunfire and running, ambushes from ceilings and walls, stalking and flanking, freezing when watched, pouncing, zigzagging when shot, dodging, and the death curl.

Removed:

  • Grab, carry, cocoon, feeding and rescue: replaced by the instant kill.
  • Lair webs, trap webs and draglines.
  • Huss mode. It was only triggered by shooting the spider while it held someone.
  • Hunting NPCs. It only hunts players.
  • Flashlight eye-shine and the "presence" drone.

Changed:

  • Units: Source units became metres (1 unit = 2.54 cm). Speeds are halved again because Source moves everything about twice as fast as BONELAB does. It still runs about twice as fast as a sprinting player. Use the Speed setting to change that.
  • Pathing: it uses the level's Unity NavMesh when there is one, instead of GMod's navmesh.
  • Climbing: only static level geometry (colliders without a rigidbody) can be climbed. It walks through loose physics props.

Build from source

powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File build.ps1 [-Profile <profile folder>] [-Install]

This needs Visual Studio Build Tools (C#) or the .NET SDK, and needs the game to have been run once with MelonLoader, BoneLib and Fusion installed, so the reference assemblies exist.

Troubleshooting

  • The texture looks scrambled: set FlipTextureV = false in MelonPreferences.cfg.
  • The spider is invisible: check the MelonLoader log for [Huntsman] using shader ... or no usable lit shader found.
  • Debug = true logs every state change.
