README

GnomeRider

Tame dogs and ride them in Burglin' Gnomes.

Throw a toy at a dog and he calms down for the rest of the round — no more hunting, no more biting. Walk up, press G, and you're riding him.

Features

Taming

  • Toy taming – any item tagged as a Toy (Bear Toy, Billiard Ball, Ball Toy…) that touches a dog tames him. No keybind, no menu — just throw or drop a toy at him.
  • Permanent for the round – once tamed, he stays tamed.
  • Calms down – a tamed dog stops hunting, stops growling, and settles in place instead of roaming.
  • Can't bite – biting is disabled for tamed dogs, so they're safe to be around.
  • Wakes up – taming a sleeping dog gets him on his feet.

Riding

  • Mount / dismount with G near a tamed dog. An on-screen prompt appears when you're close enough.
  • Steer with WASD (camera-relative) — the dog turns and runs with his real run animation.
  • Sprint by holding Left Shift.
  • Jump with Space.
  • Seated on his back, anchored to a spine bone so you move with him.

Host / solo only. Dog behaviour and movement are server-authoritative, so riding works when you're the host (which you always are in solo play). Other players won't see you riding.

Installation

  1. Install BepInEx 5 for the game.
  2. Place GnomeRider.dll into BepInEx/plugins/.
  3. Launch the game. The config file is generated automatically.

Controls

Action Default
Mount / dismount G
Steer WASD / arrow keys
Sprint Left Shift
Jump Space
Debug dump to log F9

All keys are rebindable in the config file.

Configuration

BepInEx/config/com.odinplus.gnomerider.cfg

Tame

Setting Default What it does
StayAfterTame true Tamed dogs settle down and stay put.
FollowPlayer false Tamed dogs follow you instead. Ignored while StayAfterTame is on.
FollowStopDistance 3 How far from you a following dog stops.
ToyTouchRadius 1.5 How close a toy must get to tame him.
ItemCategoryMask 4 Which item categories tame a dog (bitmask). 4 = Toy. Food=1, Canned_Food=2, Toy=4, Weapon=8, Utensil=16, Drink=256 — add them together to widen, or -1 for any item.

Ride

Setting Default What it does
MountKey G Mount / dismount.
MountRange 4 How close you must be to mount.
RideSpeed 12 How fast the dog moves.
TurnSpeed 180 How quickly he turns (degrees/sec).
SprintKey / SprintMultiplier Left Shift / 1.8 Hold to run faster.
JumpKey Space Jump.
JumpForce 9 Jump height (upward speed).
JumpGravity 20 How fast he falls back down.
SeatBoneName Spine_02 Which bone you sit on. See the [bones] list in the log for alternatives.
SeatHeight -0.05 Vertical seat adjustment.
SeatForward 1 Slide the seat along his back (+ forward).
CameraForward 0.35 Push the first-person camera forward while riding so your own body doesn't clip into view.
CameraUp 0 Raise or lower the camera while riding.
ShowMountHint true Show the on-screen mount prompt.
PauseBrainWhileRiding true Pause the dog's AI while you steer, so it doesn't fight you.
UseRootMotion false Move via the run animation instead of direct control. Off by default — direct control is more reliable.

Debug

Setting Default What it does
VerboseLogging false Extra logging (dog state, animator info).
DumpKey F9 Dump the nearest dog's components and state to the log.
PauseBrainOnTame false Disable the dog's AI on tame.
FollowViaTarget true When following, point the dog's own AI at you rather than steering him directly.

Tuning the seat

If your gnome sits too low, too far back, or clips into the camera:

  1. SeatForward slides you along his back — the most useful dial.
  2. SeatHeight raises or lowers you.
  3. CameraForward pushes the camera past your own body without moving the gnome.
  4. SeatBoneName changes the anchor bone entirely. Press F9 and check the [bones] lines in the log for the available bones and where each one sits.

Notes & known limitations

  • Host / solo only. Riding and taming aren't synced to other players, I haven't tested this in MP.
  • The rider is pinned, not posed. The gnome has no sit or ride animation (his controller has 59 clips and none of them are sitting), and the game poses riders in vehicles with FinalIK targets authored per-vehicle. So the rider is held in place rather than properly seated, and legs may clip into the dog. CameraForward hides most of it.
  • Jumping lands at the height you took off from, so hopping off a ledge won't drop you down to the lower ground.
  • Taming lasts for the round; dogs reset when a new round starts.
