README

Portal Warning

Bring Portal-inspired traversal into Content Warning: place a blue portal and an orange portal, see through the linked openings, walk or fall through, and carry your momentum out the other side.

Experimental beta, for Content Warning 1.24.0. All players in the lobby need this mod and the same version. Solo-host gameplay is tested; multiplayer synchronization is implemented but has not been verified with two players.

Features

  • A blue/orange portal pair for each player, placed on stationary, flat solid surfaces.
  • Live portal views using the game's Universal Render Pipeline.
  • Player traversal through walls, floors and ceilings, with velocity redirected by the portal orientation.
  • Content Warning's original walking, sprinting, crouching, jumping, gravity, drag and FOV. Source movement overrides have been removed.
  • A real Portal Gun pickup that spawns beside the video camera each time the camera is spawned at the surface.
  • The starting gun stays suspended beside the camera so it cannot fall off the narrow porch railing. After pickup, dropping or throwing it uses normal physics.
  • Uses the game's inventory slots, pickup interaction and drop/throw controls. Portals can only be fired while the gun is equipped.
  • An upright gun model anchored to the actual right hand, using the native inventory item and joint. No detached camera gun visual.
  • Optional official Portal world-gun model and texture loaded directly from your own installed copy of Portal, with an original procedural fallback.
  • Dual-colour crosshair, placement status and speed display.
  • Middle-mouse carrying for loose physics objects that your client owns. Host-owned loose objects can travel through portals too.
  • Switch back to Content Warning's usual equipment whenever you need to record or use an item.

Controls

Key Action
E Pick up the Portal Gun beside the video camera
1 / 2 / 3 Select the inventory slot containing the gun, or another item
Q Drop / throw the equipped gun (the game's normal control)
Left mouse Place the blue portal
Right mouse Place the orange portal
R Clear your portals while the device is equipped
Middle mouse Carry or release a loose physics object
Ctrl The game's normal crouch action
Space Jump
Shift The game's normal sprint action
WASD and mouse Use the game's normal movement and look controls

Keyboard and mouse are required for portal-device controls. The game's existing interactions, inventory, oxygen, health, recording and progression remain in place. The mod HUD leaves the game's survival information visible.

Install

For the Steam Workshop edition, subscribe to Portal Warning and launch Content Warning normally. It uses the game's native mod loader and does not require BepInEx. All friends need to subscribe and enable the same version.

For this Thunderstore edition, use Thunderstore Mod Manager or r2modman. Select Content Warning, install Portal Warning, and launch Modded. BepInEx is installed as a dependency. Everyone in a co-op lobby should use the same mod profile. Use one edition at a time; don't install both copies in the same game.

For a local ZIP, use the mod manager's Settings → Import local mod option and select the package. Install the dependency separately if your manager does not resolve dependencies for a local import.

This package adds one plugin DLL. It does not replace, patch on disk, or include any default Portal or Content Warning files. Runtime changes stop when the mod is disabled and the game restarts.

Configuration

After the first modded launch, edit BepInEx/config/peter.portalwarning.cfg inside your mod-manager profile, or use the manager's config editor. Restart the game after changing settings.

You can adjust the clear key, the HUD and portal rendering. For better performance, lower PortalViewResolution or turn off LivePortalViews. Old movement and FOV config entries from previous versions are ignored.

The Workshop edition uses default settings, with optional overrides as individual text files in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Landfall Games\Content Warning\PortalWarning. For example, PortalInstallDirectory.txt can contain your Portal install path, LivePortalViews.txt can contain false, and PortalViewResolution.txt can contain 256. No configuration files are written into either game's installation.

To use the official model, install the original Portal (2007) in a Steam library on the same PC. The mod searches Steam's library folders automatically. If needed, set PortalInstallDirectory to the full installation folder, for example C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Portal. The loader reads the VPK archives into memory without modifying or exporting them. Portal 2 and other Source models are not supported. Without a supported Portal installation, the original fallback model is used automatically. This changes the model and base texture; Valve's animations, shaders, sounds and arms are not imported.

Limits

  • This is an original adaptation of Portal's main traversal mechanics, not an exact copy of its engine, menus, animations or levels. It does not add test chambers, gels or Portal puzzles.
  • Surfaces must have enough flat space for the whole portal. There is no Portal-style material classification in Content Warning, so stationary solid surfaces are eligible.
  • Recursive portal rendering is not enabled. Live views are capped at 40 updates per second per visible portal.
  • Players stay upright during travel. Velocity follows the full portal rotation, but the character's body is not allowed to remain upside down.
  • Movement and ragdoll reactions use Content Warning's original controller. Native drag affects speed after portal exits.
  • Monsters do not traverse portals. Physics-object traversal is restricted to objects the host owns; other clients cannot take control of another player's objects.
  • Network portal synchronization is experimental. Use private modded lobbies. This mod is not marked compatible with unmodded lobbies.
  • Other mods that replace movement, gravity, player physics, FOV or camera rendering may conflict.
  • Select another inventory slot before using ordinary mouse-controlled equipment. G is no longer needed.
  • Custom item IDs depend on runtime registration order. Everyone should have the same mod profile and version; other custom-item mods may conflict. Multi-client item pickup and late joining have not been verified.

Credits and source

An unofficial fan mod. Portal is a Valve game; Content Warning is a Landfall game. No Valve or Landfall game code, textures, models, music or sounds are redistributed in this package. The fallback device, portal visuals, icon and synthesized tones are original. The optional official gun belongs to Valve and is read locally from the user's Portal installation.

The implementation was created with AI assistance and is disclosed as AI generated. Source is included in Source/PortalWarning-source.zip for inspection and rebuilding; it contains no game assemblies.
