Grongus's Vanilla Overhaul

This is a comprehensive overhaul for GTFO, designed to improve balancing and general quality control.

Detailed information for every section of changes can be found in the WIKI page. Anything not listed there has not been changed. Vanilla stats are listed in (brackets) for comparison.

Why This Mod Exists

GTFO is a great game, but it can be very janky at times and it's not very well-balanced, at least on the players side. And that's not just my opinion, it's the general opinion of almost anyone who's played this game long enough. The biggest issues are, in particular...

  1. Firearm balance is extremely poor. There is a massive gap in power between the meta picks and the underdogs, automatic weapons in particular suffer from this - almost all of them are objectively bad.
  2. A lot of reload sequences are poorly calibrated or just outright missing things - leading to many guns have odd delays after the reload animation is complete before they can fire, ammo counts not updating when the mag is inserted (particularly egregious on the Bullpup Rifle and Sniper), or just not dropping empty mags like they're supposed to.
  3. Many firearm models have improperly placed magazines, which have been tweaked to look better visually for immersion's sake.

What I Hope To Achieve

I want to tweak both ends of the spectrum - toning down the overpowered weapons, while bringing the underperformers up to snuff. The goal here is to provide a more diverse usable arsenal for players, and remove any case of weapons being objectively bad, or players saying "Oh, don't take that gun/tool/etc."

I take the difficulty of GTFO very seriously, and my balancing keeps that difficulty in mind. Every change here has been mulled-over and tested in gameplay to ensure it feels natural.

Additionally, I wanted to fix the many things that bothered me that the devs didn't seem to care about - as stated above, things like broken reload sequences or poorly-fitting models. I value immersion in my games, this game especially so, so I've fixed just about everything that I can at this point.

Closing Thoughts

I made this by myself, occasionally consulting my friends for their opinions along the way. I'd like to imagine I have decent balancing takes about GTFO after ~800 hours, but who knows.

Regardless, I believe it's a massive improvement over vanilla. If you have feedback, I can be reached on Discord - GrongusPlays.
