Global Config Redirect

Share BepInEx config files across all your profiles

Quick Start

  1. Install this mod to one of your modded profiles and launch the game once.
    • A profile with configs you actually want is a good choice.
  2. A folder will be created at %APPDATA%\GTFO.GlobalConfigRedirect\config where all your global config files will be stored.
    • By default, all config files in the profile you installed this mod to will be copied to the global folder.
  3. You can copy over other configs you wish to be global to the global folder.
  4. Optionally, you can set up an editor profile to edit the global configs in your mod manager (see below).

What it does

This mod adds a preloader patcher to BepInEx that redirects plugin config files (<profile>/BepInEx/config/*.cfg) to a single global folder.

Default global config folder: %APPDATA%\GTFO.GlobalConfigRedirect\config

On first use, if a redirected file doesn't exist globally yet, it is copied from the current profile. Profile copies are never deleted or modified.

Limitations

  • Only files opened through BepInEx ConfigFile are redirected. Mods writing their own JSON / other files into the config folder or other custom locations are not managed.
  • BepInEx.cfg and other preloader patchers' configs stay in the profile.
  • Your mod manager's config editor shows the profile copies, NOT the global ones.
    • Edit the global folder manually, or set up an editor profile (see above).
  • If you are installing mods/modpacks that ship their own configs and require them to function correctly, you need to exclude them from the redirect in the Include/Exclude settings, or else they will be redirected and may not work as intended.
    • However, per-profile configs will never be overwritten or deleted, so you can always revert to the profile copy if needed.

Config

BepInEx/config/io.takina.gtfo.GlobalConfigRedirect.cfg (this stays per-profile):

Setting Default
Enabled true
Global Folder (empty = default) environment variables are expanded
Include ** comma-separated globs, relative to the profile config folder (Skins.cfg, *.cfg, Hikaria/**)
Exclude (empty) wins over Include
Copy Existing true grabs missing global files from the profile

Glob syntax (case-insensitive, \ and / both work as separators):

Pattern Matches
* any characters within one file/folder name
? one character within a name
** anything, across folders
**/ zero or more folders (**/Foo.cfg matches Foo.cfg and a/b/Foo.cfg)

Everything else is literal. [...] classes and {a,b} alternatives are not supported; list alternatives as separate globs instead.

Editing global configs in your mod manager (optional)

Mod managers only edit the config folder of the selected profile. To edit the global configs with the mod manager's config editor, make a dedicated "editor" or "global" profile whose BepInEx/config folder is a link to the global folder. This profile is only for editing; you never need to launch it, and it isn't needed for the redirect to work.

Folders can't be hard-linked. Use a junction on Windows and a symlink on Linux; both act like a shortcut the mod manager can't tell apart from a normal folder.

  1. Launch the game once with this mod installed so the global folder exists and is populated.
  2. Create a new profile in your mod manager (e.g. Global Config). You might want to install the BepInEx pack.
  3. Close the mod manager.
  4. Open the profile folder (e.g. in Gale: File -> Open Profile Folder) and delete the BepInEx/config folder.
  5. Create the link as below, then reopen the mod manager.

Placeholders: <profile> is the editor profile's folder, <global> is the global folder.

Windows

Default <global> is %APPDATA%\GTFO.GlobalConfigRedirect\config. In a Command Prompt (no admin needed; replace <profile> with the editor profile's path):

mklink /J "<profile>\BepInEx\config" "%APPDATA%\GTFO.GlobalConfigRedirect\config"

To remove the link later (removes only the link, not the global files):

rmdir "<profile>\BepInEx\config"

Linux (Proton)

The game runs in Proton, so <global> is the AppData/Roaming/GTFO.GlobalConfigRedirect/config folder inside GTFO's Proton prefix, not in your Linux home. Find it once, then:

ln -s "<global>" "<profile>/BepInEx/config"

To remove the link later (no trailing slash, or rm targets the folder contents):

rm "<profile>/BepInEx/config"

Notes

  • Remove the link before deleting the editor profile. Deleting a profile through some tools can follow the link and delete the global configs too.
  • BepInEx.cfg and this mod's own config are never redirected, so editing them in the editor profile does nothing for your other profiles. Edit those per profile.
  • Changes made in the editor profile apply to every profile on its next launch. A running game won't notice them unless the mod in question reloads its config.
