README

Rescue Claw item pull

The mod fixes the rescue claw's broken highlight detection and adds a fully working item-pull mechanic the base game left unfinished.

What it fixes

  • Highlight-through-walls bug: the crosshair used to light up on a character even through solid terrain, because the raycast's closest-hit resolution and the highlight flag were computed separately. Now the highlight only triggers on the actual closest hit.

What it adds

  • Pull loose items: the claw can now grab and reel in physical items lying on the ground — something the devs stubbed out (RPCA_RescueItem) but never implemented.
  • Backpacks included: works on dropped backpacks, not just small items.
  • Attached items: coconuts, kingberries, prickleberries and other kinematic/attached items get a quick reach-and-grab animation instead of a physics pull, and go straight into your inventory — useful for snatching food.
  • Item highlight: the shoot reticle changes color when aiming at a grabbable item, same as it already does for characters.
  • Configurable reticle color: the item-highlight color is adjustable in the BepInEx config (R/G/B sliders), so you're not stuck with the default.
  • Correct item-use consumption: pulling/grabbing an item properly consumes a claw charge, same as the existing pull types.
  • Multiplayer-safe: ownership transfer and pull state are handled correctly across clients — tested in a live multiplayer session, not just solo.

Compatibility

Client-side Harmony patches only. Works in any lobby.

Known issues

Animations are first‑person only, so other people will see the item pull by invisible force. Scout Cannon cannot be grabbed.
