README

PoseBox

A ReSkate plugin that bends your skater's bones: 200+ emotes, creatures, crazy physics, a bone editor, a pose editor with a timeline, an emote wheel, dance parties and duets with other players, silly boards and a shrink ray, all in its own F9 menu. It layers on top of your normal animation, and the poses show to other players too.

Install

  1. In the ReSkate launcher, GET MODS, find PoseBox and install it (or copy the mod's folder into your ReSkate Mods folder yourself).
  2. Start skating. The first time it loads, ReSkate asks you to approve its permissions (console, input, menu, overlay, skater.read, skater.animation, storage, events.skater, session.skaters, board, ui.screen, net.session, camera). Approve them.
  3. Press F9.

plugin list in the console shows it running; plugin reload <folder> reloads it.

The menu (F9)

F9 opens PoseBox's own menu down the side of the screen, with the game still showing beside it so you can watch what you pick. The tabs run down its left edge. Use the mouse; the wheel scrolls (or drag the scroll bar); right click a slider to put it back to normal; rest the mouse on a button to see what it does. F9, Esc or the X closes it. (PLUGINS > PoseBox in ReSkate's menu has a button that opens it too.)

While it's open the menu has your keys and mouse, so the skater rolls on without you.

Tab What's there
POSE EDITOR Make your own emotes on a timeline
EMOTES Classic, Goofy, Dances and Mine (your own), and a search box over every emote, creature and dance
DANCES The imported dances (Fortnite emotes and others), with their own search
CRAZY Cartoon physics, explode on bail, EXPLODE, rubber punch, and the crazy emotes
CREATURES Slenderman, Lizard, Spider, Ring girl and the rest, and Slenderman's stretch
BODY Your whole body: size (Ant to Titan), proportions (head, hands, arms, legs, torso, neck, feet, belly, chest) and the Morphs
BONES The bone editor: pose and tweak one part at a time
BOARD Board modes, paint, shape, trails and extras
PLAYERS Join what a player plays, dance party, duets and requests (see below)
WHEEL The emote wheel's pages: reorder, remove, clear
FX Effects that play with your emotes (see below)

Hover previews: rest the mouse on a dance and a card beside the menu plays it on a mannequin built from your skater's own skeleton (read from the dance's native clip).

SETTINGS (bottom of the tabs) has emote speed, who sees your poses, the status line, the keys and reset everything, and Look & feel: the menu's colour (8 presets, or any colour from the picker), its size (Small to Huge), which side of the screen it sits on, the game's menu sounds, and the animations.

The bar at the top shows what's playing, with Random and Stop.

Keys

Key Does
F9 Open / close the menu
F5 The emote wheel
F6 Next emote
F7 Previous emote
F8 Emote off
F10 Reset everything

Tiny, random, punch, explode and cartoon have no key until you give them one. Everything is rebindable on ReSkate's Binds page.

Controller: Back + D-pad up opens the menu, L3 + R3 (both stick clicks) the wheel. In the menu the right stick moves a pointer, A clicks, X right clicks, the d-pad scrolls, LB / RB change tab and B goes back. On the wheel the right stick picks a slice, A plays it, LB / RB change page and B closes it.

Console commands

emote list | <name> | off | next | prev | random
size <0.05-10> | ant | tiny | giant | titan | reset
bones on | off | reset the bone editor
board <mode> | rainbow | jelly | lava | reset
punch, explode, cartoon on|off, wheelsoff

Emote wheel (F5)

Up to 8 favourite emotes round the middle of the screen, on up to 4 pages: point at one and click, or press 1 to 8; Q / E, the mouse wheel or the dots up top change page. The middle stops what's playing, or accepts a duet request. Right click any emote in the F9 menu to put it on the page picked in EMOTES (or take it off): its badge shows its key, or "P2" when it's on another page. A full page spills onto the next page with room. F5 or Esc closes it.

The WHEEL tab shows each page's 8 slots with their keys: play one, move it earlier or later, take it off, or clear the page.

EMOTES also has a Recent row: the last five you played.

Emote effects (FX tab)

Particles that play on your skater while an emote does: confetti, hearts, sparkles, fire hands, music notes, dizzy stars, smoke, money rain, bubbles, lightning, neon trails, feathers and spooky ghosts. Pick one for All emotes (Auto, the default, puts music notes on dances with music), or play an emote and pick one for This emote only. Hover a card to see it move. Amount: Low, Normal or Lots.

Pulse to the music (on unless you switch it off): while a dance's song plays, effects burst on its beat (a bigger burst on the first of every four), and the board's Disco, Neon and Police lights flash in time. The tools find each song's beat when they build the music (build_sounds.py, or build_sounds.py --beats plugin/dances for songs you already have).

Ghost echo (Off, While emoting or Always): a fading glow of your outline trails behind whatever part of you moves, cyan turning purple as it fades.

Other players running PoseBox see your effects on your skater, and you see theirs (switch that off with Players' effects). PoseBox draws them itself, over the world: ReSkate's own particle effects only work with effect assets built into the game's files, which a plugin can't ship. So they'd show through walls: instead, a few times a second PoseBox casts rays from the camera to the skater, and fades their effect out while a wall (or anything solid) is in the way.

Players: join, dance party and duets

These work with other players in your session who run PoseBox too (the PLAYERS tab lists them, with what each is playing).

  • Join: plays what that player is playing, at the same point in it, and keeps with them (in time, onto whatever they switch to, stopping when they stop) until you pick something yourself or press Joined again. No party needed.
  • Dance party: turn on Party. Whatever you start, players with Party on start too, kept in time; whatever they start, you play. Whoever starts an emote leads; stopping it stops the party's.
  • Duets: click a player's name, then a duet (High five, Hug, Handshake, Fist bump). They get a request on screen; when they accept (F5 wheel, or F9 > PLAYERS), you both turn to face each other and do it together. Arms stretch if you're far apart.
  • Share emotes: in POSE EDITOR, pick one of yours and Share with players here. Players with PoseBox get it under Shared with you and choose Keep (it joins their emotes) or No thanks.

Emotes

Emotes turn joints body-relative, place both hands with PoseBox's own arm IK (ReSkate's reach only drives one arm), shape the fingers, aim the face and bend the knees with leg IK.

Fingers. About 15 s after you spawn, PoseBox works out each hand's fingers (which is which, which way the palm faces, how each joint bends) and checks a quick fist. Emotes then use real hand shapes: fist, point, peace, thumbs up, horns, shaka, finger gun, open, flat, claw, OK and counting.

Elbows and knees always bend the way real ones can: PoseBox learns each one's hinge from your normal animation (once; it's saved between launches) and twists the upper arm or thigh to line it up with the bend it wants.

Creatures (Slenderman, Lizard, Dinosaur, Slug, Spider, Alpaca, Ring girl, Spider-walk, Gorilla, Frog, Penguin, Kangaroo, Cobra, Octopus, Ostrich, Flamingo, Dog, Cat, Turtle, Giraffe, Praying mantis, Goblin) bend the spine, stretch limbs with the slender rig, plant hands with arm IK, and keep each foot where it stands on the board when they crouch.

Imported dances (DANCES tab)

PoseBox can play dances converted from Unity humanoid animation clips (the .anim kind with muscle curves), such as emote packs you have. None come with it: the DANCES tab says so until you add some.

tools/ in the mod folder is the converter (Python 3): unpack each .unitypackage (a gzipped tar) into its own folder and run python3 -I tools/build_dances.py plugin/dances <pack folder> [more...] from the mod folder. Each dance drives every body bone a plugin can move: hips, spine to head, shrugs, hands (scaled to your arms, touching your body where the dancer's do), elbows and knees bending the dancer's way, feet (steps, toe taps, heel lifts), toes, and every finger joint. Ones with an intro play it once, then loop.

Native clips (the best way to play them): with ReSkate Studio's reskate_cli, export the skater's skeleton, then build every dance as a real game animation with tools/build_clips.py (see tools/README.md). A dance then plays as a clip, posed exactly as Unity would pose it (Unity's muscle math, ported from civbb), feet on the ground where the dancer's are, and other players see it without PoseBox. On the board only the upper body dances (spine, arms, hands and fingers, straight from the clip), like the game's own board animations: your legs and hips keep riding (SETTINGS > Dances on the board: Whole body plays all of it, legs bent to keep your feet on the deck). In a dance party the clips follow the leader's clock, so everyone dances in time. Without clips, dances are posed bone by bone. The console's clip <name> plays one clip by hand.

Songs: if the packs have the dances' music, add it with python3 -I tools/build_sounds.py plugin/dances <pack.unitypackage or folder> [more...] (needs ffmpeg). A dance's song plays while you dance it (its intro, then its loop), and players with PoseBox and the same songs hear it from where you are. SETTINGS > SOUND turns your music and players' music on or off and sets the volume. ReSkate keeps at most 32 different sound files a run, so after about 16 to 32 different songs PoseBox says so: reload it to hear more.

Keep converted dances and songs to your own game: they're their makers'. Eyes, lips and jaw can't follow (the visible face ignores poses).

Body shape and Morphs

The BODY tab is your whole body, both sides at once. Size is the shrink ray. Proportions sets head and hand size, arm, leg, torso and neck length, feet size, belly and chest. It stacks on top of every emote, shows to everyone and saves itself. Longer or shorter legs move your hips so your feet stay on the board; belly and chest swell that part of you while the bones above keep their size. Mutate! rolls a random body; Normal shape puts it back. Lengths wait until your skeleton is measured: ~10 s the first time, then moments (the measurements are saved and reused).

Changing your shape (top of BODY and BONES) lists everything changing your shape right now as chips: size, each proportion, a morph that's playing, and the bone editor. Click a chip to go where it's set; its x puts it back (for the bone editor, turns it off and keeps your edits).

Morphs (same tab): Big head, Balloon head, Pinhead, Headless, Exorcist, Head spin, Owl, Floating head, Giraffe neck, Clown hands, Swole, Stick figure, Noodle, Hover, Vibrate, Yo-yo size, and Chibi, Stilts, Stubby legs, Gorilla arms, T-rex arms, Clown shoes, Beer belly, Gym bro, Hunchback, No neck, Lopsided and Meltdown.

Bone editor

The BONES tab, for posing and tweaking one part at a time (BODY is for the whole body). Pick a body part (head, neck, chest, lower back, hips, shoulders, upper arms, forearms, hands, thighs, shins, feet, toes) and a ring on your skater shows which one it is (blue on its mirrored pair). Then set:

  • Hand shape (hands): fist, point, peace, thumbs up, rock on, shaka, finger gun, open, flat, claw, OK
  • Rotate (tilt, twist, lean) and Move (up to 5 m; past ~1.9 m the parent bones take the rest, so the limb or neck stretches out)
  • Size and Length. Where a BODY slider changes the same part (head, hands, arms, legs...) it says so: the two multiply
  • Looping effect: Wobble, Sway, Spin, Pulse, Grow, Shake, Bounce, Vibrate, Flail, Blink, Twist, Roll, Twitch, Breathe, Bob, Orbit, Drift, Heartbeat, Glitch, with amount, speed and a delay (give the other side a delay to move in turn)

Tools: Mirror edits both sides at once; Copy / Paste a part's settings; To other side copies this part across once; Random part; Chaos! scrambles a handful of parts; Undo (30 steps); Reset part / all. Quick setups: Alien, Noodle arms, Hip shake, Heartbeat, Glitchy, Big foot, Bobble body, Rock star. Saved setups: 5 named slots. Changed parts lists what you've edited; click one to jump to it.

Edits stack on top of whatever emote is playing (sizes multiply, turns and moves add), save themselves and come back next launch. Console: bones on, bones off, bones reset.

Pose editor

The POSE EDITOR tab makes your own emotes by posing your skater with the mouse and keyframing it on a timeline.

  1. + New emote, then Open in the pose editor. The menu makes way for a side panel and a timeline, and handles appear on your skater.
  2. Drag the handles: hands, feet and Look move across the screen (the mouse wheel pushes them nearer or further; the arm and leg IK follows). Chest: drag to bend and twist, right drag to lean. Hips: drag up and down to crouch, sideways to turn, right drag to tilt. Elbows and knees (the small rings): drag one to point it, which turns the way the arm or leg bends; keyed like the rest. Shoulders: drag up and down to shrug, sideways to swing them forward or back. Chest and Lower back bend, twist and lean separately (arch, hunch, curve). Shift + drag the hips to slide them (weight on one leg), Shift + drag Look to tilt the head. Look around: drag empty space to orbit your skater, the wheel zooms, middle drag pans; Front / Side / Back / Reset views in the panel. Leaving the editor gives the game its camera back.
  3. Timeline: click the track to move the playhead, then pose: a keyframe appears there (or the one there changes). Drag a keyframe to retime it (it snaps to 0.05 s; hold Shift for none). Right click the track to add a key, or a key to delete it. < Key / Key > jump between keys. Key here, Delete key, Copy / Paste / Mirror a pose, Stand up (back to standing), Undo, and a hand shape per hand, keyed too. Ease sets how a key moves on to the next: Auto (the Smooth setting), Linear, Smooth, Ease in, Ease out, Hold (a square on the timeline: it holds its pose, then snaps) or Bounce (past the next pose and back). Gizmo: the part you clicked gets arrows (W, move along one axis: red right, green up, blue forward) or rings (E, turn about one axis); Q hides it. Hands, feet, hips and Look move; hands (the wrist), feet, chest, lower back, hips, shoulders and Look (head tilt) turn. The side panel has three tabs: Selected (sliders for the part you clicked, or a list of parts to pick from), Keys (keyframe tools and easing) and View (camera, onion skin, rig lines, the controls panel). Turn a hand or foot: click its handle, then use the sliders (wrist up / down, side to side and twist, and its hand shape; a foot's toe up / down, turn and roll, and its toes up or curled), or hold Shift and drag the handle (right drag: the other way). A hand left Natural carries on along the forearm.
  4. Play to preview; Loop, Smooth and Length in the panel. Done goes back.

Onion skin shows ghosts of the keys before and after; Rig lines join the handles to the body (both in VIEW). The Controls panel in the top right lists every mouse move and key (Hide folds it away). Keys: Space play / pause, K key here, Del delete the key, Left / Right previous / next key, Home back to the start, M mirror, Ctrl Z undo, Ctrl C / V copy / paste.

Your emotes are saved, show in EMOTES > Mine, and can go on the wheel. Friends without your emote don't see it in a dance party.

Slenderman / stick figure

ReSkate's scale is one number per joint, so it can't thin a bone without also shortening it. The slender rig scales the body thin from the hips, then pushes every joint (and the twist helpers the skin rides on) further along its bone so each bone stretches back out, and raises the hips so your feet stay on the board. It measures your skeleton once, about 10 s after you spawn.

Crazy

Everything here shows to other players.

  • Cartoon physics: squash on landings, stretch in the air, jiggle on turns, Naruto run when you're fast, coyote time when you hang in the air.
  • Explode when you bail, and an EXPLODE button: you fly apart and pull back together.
  • Rubber punch!: your arm stretches up to ~4 m to punch the nearest player within 6 m (or the air).
  • Crazy emotes: Rubber punch, Stalker (your neck creeps out to the nearest player's head), Keep exploding, Headless horseman, Moon head, Tornado, Slinky, Balloon pop, Mr. Fantastic, Handstand, Copycat, Wet noodle, Head pat, Clingy hug, High five, Selfie stick, Pancake, Breakdance, Ghost, Lift-off, Periscope, Jack-in-the-box.

Limits

  • Only one plugin can pose the skater at a time; while another mod is posing, PoseBox doesn't take effect.
  • ReSkate's pose takes 64 joints and lets a plugin read 32 at once, so a few things wait their turn (the hand scan, the hinge measuring) and the dances use 54 joints.
