CityEditorSaveFix
A BepInEx (mod loader) plugin for Shadows of Doubt. Your city editor saves load again.
Saves made in a city built with the city editor sometimes stop loading with this error, even though the city is still on your disk:

CityEditorSaveFix finds the right city and loads it. No more renaming files in AppData by hand.
If CityEditorSaveFix saved your save, please leave a like on its Thunderstore page. It keeps me motivated to make more mods. Donations are welcome too:
How it works
A save remembers which city file it belongs to. For city editor cities, the game sometimes stores the wrong name, for example the save's own name (Marco PI Soddo 2026-...) instead of the city's (Soddo). The game then cannot find the city file and, because editor cities cannot be rebuilt from a seed, refuses to load.
The mod fixes this in three places:
- When you save: if the game is about to store a city name that has no city file, the mod stores the name of the city you are actually playing in. New saves load without any help.
- When the save menu opens: the game builds the suggested save name from the city name it has in memory, which it sometimes overwrites with the previous save's name, so names pile up ("Marco PI Marco PI Soddo ..."). The mod puts the real city name back first, so the suggestion is "Marco PI Soddo ..." again.
- When you load an old save: if the game cannot find the city, the mod looks in your
Citiesfolder for the city editor city whose name is part of the stored name. If there is none, it takes the city editor city that was saved last before the save was made.
The mod only steps in when the city name is wrong, so normal saves are never touched. Nothing is written to your existing saves or city files, so you can remove the mod at any time.
Saves that are already broken are rescued too. Just install and load.
Compressed saves and city files (.sodb and .citb, used when the game's compression setting is on) are handled the same way.
Stuck at "Creating evidence"? Cities made or changed with city editing or density mods can leave some citizens with a home but no matching resident record, and the game stops loading when it reaches them. The mod repairs those citizens while the save loads and writes each repair to the log.
Known gaps
- The city file itself must still exist in
AppData\LocalLow\ColePowered Games\Shadows of Doubt\Cities. A deleted city cannot be brought back. - For an old save, the fallback picks the city editor city saved last before the save. If you generated or edited another city editor city in between, rename the city file to the name in the error message by hand.
Install
Use Thunderstore Mod Manager or r2modman and install as normal. BepInEx is installed automatically.
To install by hand:
- Install BepInExPack IL2CPP version 6.0.755.
- Put
SoDCityEditorSaveFix.dllinBepInEx/plugins/CityEditorSaveFix/inside your existingBepInExfolder.
There are no settings.

CHANGELOG
Changelog
1.0.5
- Page text only, no code changes: links to my other mods, and "All my mods" now shows the modpacks too.
1.0.4
- Saves that stopped at "Creating evidence" load again. Cities made or changed with city editing and density mods can leave citizens with a home but no matching resident record, and the game crashed on them while loading. Those citizens are now repaired on load: they get the residence of their home, or, where the home has none, are set up without a resident record. Each repair is written to the log.
- Birthday cards for such citizens are built without the home link instead of stopping the load.
1.0.3
- Rescues saves when the game's compression is on. Compressed city files (
.citb) and compressed saves (.sodb) were not found, so those saves still showed "Missing city data". Reported by a player using cities from City Planner. - Writes a line to the log each time the game looks for a city editor city, to make any remaining problem easy to trace.
1.0.2
- The suggested name in the save menu no longer piles up the previous save names ("Marco PI Marco PI Soddo ..."): the real city name is put back before the menu opens.
1.0.1
- Also rescues saves whose stored name does not contain the city's name (for example a save named "Marco PI 2x2" in the city "Baltic"): the city editor city saved last before the save is loaded.
- New saves store the right city in the first place, so they load without help.
1.0.0
- First release. Saves from city editor cities that stopped loading with "Missing city data" load their city again.
