README

BeastTribes Reimagined

Based on the original Beast Tribes mod. Full credit for the original work goes to EossFox, Snarling Fox and DerSpieleentwickler. This is a standalone rework; install Reimagined by itself, without the original Beast Tribes mod or its compatibility shim.

Play as a fox, grey fox, wolf, lynx, leopard, panther, snow leopard, lizard or dragon. The rework brings digitigrade feet, reshaped armor, Vanity and transmog support, moving tails and ears, dragon wings, and hairstyle-specific positioning. Both body types are supported. Beast skills and perks carry over, including lizard diving and dragon flight.

Choose your species

Choose a species on the character creation screen and see its bonuses before creating your character. The choice is saved with that character and locked after creation. Existing characters without a saved species get a one-time choice on the character selection screen.

Press B in game to see your species, bonuses and settings. On a single-player world, or as a server admin, you can change a species with the console commands below. A server admin can also allow everyone to change their own species from the B menu with beastTribes.allowSpeciesChange true; the default is locked.

beastTribes.speciesMenu Open the admin species editor for yourself
beastTribes.speciesMenu "Player Name" Edit an online player's species
beastTribes.setSpecies "Player Name" lynx Set an online player's species directly
beastTribes.players List online players and their IDs
beastTribes.setSpecies #123456:42 viking Use an ID when names are duplicated
beastTribes.listSpecies List available species and aliases
beastTribes.allowSpeciesChange true Allow players to change their own species
beastTribes.allowSpeciesChange false Lock player changes again

Run these from the in-game console or, for direct commands, the dedicated-server console. Admin commands require server admin rights. Names with spaces need quotes; #id values change when a character reconnects or respawns. Species changes are saved to the character.

Hair positioning

Adjust hair forward/back, up/down and left/right during character creation. The position updates in the preview and is saved separately for each character, species, body type and hairstyle. Switching hairstyles restores each one's saved position. Hair movement does not move the beard.

You can also change the current hairstyle's position in game with BepInEx Configuration Manager, if installed, or edit the mod's config files manually. The current editor is on the character creation screen; a barber station editor may come later.

Armor and Vanity

Supported armor sets use beast-shaped models, including digitigrade leg armor. The rendered Vanity choice is used for armor fitting, so transmogs are supported. Azu Extended Player Inventory is supported, including its Vanity slots and beast character preview.

Requirements

  • BepInExPack for Valheim
  • Jotunn (JVL) 2.30 or newer
  • Optional: BepInEx Configuration Manager for editing offsets and physics settings in game
  • Optional: Azu Extended Player Inventory for its inventory and Vanity features

Use the same Reimagined version on the server and participating clients. Dynamic Bone is included in the plugin; no separate download is needed. The menu and settings are available in English, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil) and Russian.

Known issues

  • Roughly a third of the armor sets have been reshaped for beast bodies so far. The rest can clip or retain their human shape. More sets are in progress, with an estimated 1 to 4 weeks for the current pass.
  • Lizards and dragons have differently shaped feet. They do not have separate foot armor models yet, so foot armor can clip.
  • Some textures have small imperfections. I am still learning the modeling work and plan to fix them.
  • Tail, ear and wing physics on ragdolls still need tuning and may change in a future update.

Credits

BeastTribes Reimagined is based on Beast Tribes. All credit for the original mod goes to EossFox, Snarling Fox and DerSpieleentwickler. Thank you for the work that made this rework possible. Additional original-mod credit: Jaryic. Reimagined bodies, armor refits and implementation: Arctic Fox. Dynamic Bone: Will Hong.

CHANGELOG

Changelog

1.2.1 — 2026-09-28

  • Corrected EosFoxx's name in the original Beast Tribes credits.

1.2.0 — 2026-09-28

  • Added playable male and female dragons. Double-tap Jump in the air to take off, flap to climb, Run to speed up, and Crouch to descend. Flying drains stamina; flapping trains Dragon Flight and costs less as the skill rises. Dragon wings sway while grounded and flap in flight. Dragon feet may clip through shared armor while fitting is unfinished.
  • Fixed the male dragon preview showing a second, purple pair of wings.
  • Restored the dragon wing membrane texture and made both sides visible.
  • Fixed remaining gaps in male dragon wings and twisted female dragon limbs in character creation and gameplay.
  • Fixed dragon armor sleeves, belts and other separate armor meshes collapsing into the body and disappearing.
  • Restored BT 1.2's flight system, including its body animations, wing transitions, lift, climbing, braking, folded-wing free fall and auto-flight. Holding Jump repeats flaps; exhausted dragons can continue gliding. The original wind/flap sounds and flight display are restored. Removed the added body tilt that could fight the flying pose and disturb the camera.
  • Added playable male and female lizards with Lizard Diving. Crouch to dive, Jump to rise and Run to swim faster. Diving trains the skill, lowers underwater stamina costs and improves slow surface recovery. Armor fitting around lizard feet is still being worked on.
  • Choose your race during character creation, with its bonuses shown beside the appearance controls.
  • Race is now saved with the character and stays the same across worlds and restarts. Existing characters without a saved race get a one-time choice on the character-selection screen.
  • The B menu now shows your race, bonuses and settings. Race changes after creation are available through the new admin editor and console commands.
  • Added hair-position sliders, fine-adjustment buttons and Reset to beast character creation. Changes show immediately, with ten adjustment steps either side of the default position.
  • Hair positions save per character, race, body type and hairstyle. Adjusting hair no longer moves the beard; matching versions also show this separation in multiplayer.
  • Fixed the invisible Viking preview when switching races during character creation. Hair stays attached when changing beast models and follows the head during idle animations.
  • Tails and ears now use Dynamic Bone, with the same starting settings as the BT compatibility shim. They also move on beast corpses as the body tumbles and settles.
  • Physics tuning uses new Dynamic Bone sections. Previous physics settings remain saved separately.

1.1.0 — 2026-09-23

  • Fixed the right ear of leopards, panthers and snow leopards stretching away from the head whenever the ears moved.
  • Iron and Flametal armour now fit beast bodies too.

1.0.1 — 2026-09-22

  • Fixed the inventory preview of Azu Extended Player Inventory showing a regular viking instead of your beast.
  • Fixed hair offsets doing nothing. Hair, beard and helmet offsets now each move only their own item, so moving the helmet no longer drags the hair along.
  • Fixed viking eyes showing through the beast head when a mod that adds eye colours is installed.
  • Skill levels from BeastTribes 1.2 characters now carry over (BeastTribes 2025.11 characters already did).

1.0.0 — 2026-09-22

  • First shared build (friends-and-testers release, not on Thunderstore yet).
  • Tails and ears move: tails swing and lag behind you, ears hold their pose and twitch as you move. Everything is adjustable live in the Configuration Manager under "TailPhysics", and it feels the same at every frame rate.
