Odin's Hearth

Odin has opinions about your house. He's walked in, sat in every chair, poked the fire and looked at your rugs. Now he'll tell you what he thinks, and what to build next.

Press N at home to see:

  • Comfort level: the number the game uses for your Rested bonus
  • Sheltered / near a fire / rested: yes or no for each, how long your Rested bonus has left, how long resting here would give you, and if you can't rest, why not (wet, cold, no fire, something hunting you)
  • Counting: every piece adding comfort, and how much
  • Not counting: the pieces nearby that don't, and why. A plain bed when the dragon bed already counts, a second copy of the same banner, a fire that's gone out
  • Cheapest next step: the one piece you could build to raise your comfort for the least effort, with its recipe, how much of each material you're carrying, and whether you can build it right now. Plus a couple of runners-up
  • Road to max comfort: the highest comfort you could reach in this spot with the pieces you know, the shortest list of pieces that gets you there, and every material for the lot, checked against your pack. One shopping list for the whole room
  • Fires: how long each comfort fire will keep burning, and how much fuel would fill it. A fire that goes out stops counting, so you'll know before it does
  • Better spot: if there's a sheltered spot a few steps away where comfort is higher, which way and how far. Sometimes the fix is to stand by the other wall
  • A one-line remark from Odin, keyed to how well you live. Live in a box and he'll say so. Build a mead hall and he'll try to move in

The panel stays up for 20 seconds, then fades away over another 5. Press N again to put it away sooner, or while it's fading to keep it a while longer.

The panel is never taller than half the screen. In a big base there's more to say than that, so scroll with the mouse wheel (or PageUp/PageDown) while it's open. The camera stays put while you scroll.

No item to craft, no book to read. Stand by the fire, press the key, and find out what one more piece of furniture would do for you.

How comfort is worked out

Valheim works comfort out from where you stand. You start at 1. A roof and walls add 1, and only then does furniture count: every comfort piece within 10 metres adds its value, but only the best piece of each kind counts. One bed, one chair, one table, one fire, one banner, and so on. Two of the same piece count once.

The hearth asks the game's own comfort code for your level, then replays the same rules on the same pieces to show which ones are counting. Piece values and kinds come from the game's data, not a built-in list, so furniture added by other mods is counted, ignored and suggested exactly like vanilla furniture, and the panel stays right after Valheim patches rebalance things.

For the next step, the hearth tries every comfort piece on every build tool the game knows about, adds each one to the room on paper, and keeps the ones that raise your level. "Cheapest" means the fewest materials you'd still have to go and get. Ties go to the smaller recipe, then to the bigger gain.

The road to max takes the best piece of each kind you could still improve on (the cheapest one, if several are equally good), plus every ungrouped piece that would add something, and lists them cheapest first. Building them all gets you the number at the top.

The better spot is found by trying standing places within about 6 metres that you can see from where you are, with the game's own shelter test and comfort count at each.

Configuration

Settings live in BepInEx/config/hevyh2o.valheim.odinshearth.cfg. If you have a Configuration Manager mod installed, you can also change them in game (usually F1); this mod doesn't need one.

Things to know

  • It's about where you're standing. Comfort is counted from your position, 10 metres around you. Stand where you'd sleep or sit by the fire, then press N.
  • Fires have to be lit. A hearth or brazier only gives comfort while it's burning. The panel lists cold ones under "Not counting" so you know to feed them.
  • Outside, the next step is always a roof. Furniture doesn't count until you're sheltered, so that's what the panel suggests. It also tells you what the spot would be worth with a roof.
  • Building needs a crafting station. If the cheapest piece needs a workbench or forge you're not near, the panel says so.
  • Your eyes only. The panel is drawn on your screen. Works in single-player and multiplayer, and nobody else needs the mod.
  • Materials are counted from your pack. Chests don't count. Empty your pockets into the workbench chest and the numbers will look worse than they are.
  • Fancy a different take? Jumpingmushroom's ComfortAudit is a thorough, well-made comfort breakdown, with build-menu icons, a placement preview while you build, and materials counted from nearby chests too. Odin's Hearth is the tavern's version: the whole road to max comfort as one shopping list, fire fuel timers, the better spot in the room, and Odin's running commentary. Both read the game's own rules, so pick whichever suits you.

Odin's Free Refills: no stamina costs while the coast is clear. The hearth gets you Rested; the refills make sure you don't waste it on the walk to the mine.

Odin's Wanted Posters: look at a creature and press E to see its health, weaknesses and drops. Know what's outside before you leave the fire.

Odin's Drunk Cam

Odin's Drunk Cam: drink a mead and the world sways; the more meads, the more it sways. Purely visual, with an intensity slider and an off key. Best enjoyed sitting by the fire.
