Odin's Long Drop
Twenty metres is a long way down. Odin did the sums so you don't have to.
- Look before you leap. Stand at a ledge and look down, and a small readout
beside your crosshair shows the drop and the damage the landing will do. Prefer
one line under the crosshair, with the health you'd have left? That's
Style. - Red means no. If the fall would kill you, the readout turns red and Odin says so, once. "22 metres. About 100 damage. You have 60. Odin would take the stairs."
- Mid-air, too. Already falling? The readout shows what's coming. It's too late to change your mind, but at least you'll know.
No keys, no items, nothing to build. Jump if you must. Odin just wants it on record that he mentioned it.
When the readout shows
- At a ledge. You're near an edge, looking down, and the drop below is more than 4 metres: the point where the game starts to hurt you. Cliffs, rocks, and the floors, walls and roofs you built all count, and so do slopes too steep to stand on: Odin follows the ground along your crosshair to where it levels out.
- While falling. Once you've dropped more than 4 metres.
- Not otherwise. Walking about, climbing stairs, walking down a slope or hopping off a bench: nothing.
How Odin works it out
The same way the game does. Below 4 metres a fall is free. From there, every metre costs a little more, up to 100 damage at 20 metres; it doesn't get worse after that, it just doesn't get better either. A Feather Cape, or anything else that softens landings, is counted exactly as the game counts it.
Slopes follow the game's rule too. Anything steeper than 38° can't be stood on; the game slides you down it. So a gorge that steep counts as part of the drop, from where you'd leave level ground to where it levels out again, or to where you're aiming if that comes first. That's the worst case: slide down without ever leaving the ground and the game only charges you for the bits where you did.
Client-side only
Only you need it. It measures the ground below you and does arithmetic: no new items, no network messages, no world data. Works in single-player, on dedicated servers and with friends who don't have it.
Configuration
Settings live in BepInEx/config/hevyh2o.valheim.odinslongdrop.cfg. If you have a
Configuration Manager mod installed, you can also change them in game (usually F1);
this mod doesn't need one.
| Setting | Default | Controls |
|---|---|---|
Enabled |
true | Master switch. |
ShowAtLedge |
true | Show the readout when you look down from an edge. |
SlopeAngle |
38 | Ground steeper than this, in degrees, counts as part of a drop, 20 to 80. 38 is the game's own limit for standing on a slope. |
LookDownAngle |
14 | How far below level, in degrees, you look before Odin checks the drop ahead, 5 to 60. |
ShowWhileFalling |
true | Show the readout while you fall. |
MinDrop |
4 | Smallest drop worth showing, in metres, 1 to 20. |
WarnIfFatal |
true | Odin's one line when the fall would kill you. |
Units |
metres | metres or feet, for the sailors among you. |
Style |
BesideCrosshair | BesideCrosshair: the drop and the damage in two short lines, just left of the crosshair. BelowCrosshair: one line under it, with the health you'd have left as well. |
TextScale |
1 | Size of the readout and Odin's line, 0.5 to 2. At 1 they match the game's own HUD, which already follows your screen and the game's GUI scale. |
DebugLog |
false | Write each readout and warning to the BepInEx log, for bug reports. |
Things to know
- Water and soft ground. The readout measures to the first surface below you. A lake might save you. Odin wouldn't bet your bag on it.
- It warns, it doesn't stop you. No invisible railings. Your legs, your choice.
- Not a fall-damage changer. If you want falls to hurt less, Crystal's GracefulLanding or AstralBeauty's FallRoll do that. Odin's Long Drop leaves the damage alone and tells you about it beforehand.
- Found a bug or have an idea? Tell Odin in
Odin's Tavern. The
ravens read every note; your
BepInEx\LogOutput.loghelps them read faster.
Also from Odin's tavern
Odin's Thread: a faint trail on your map and minimap of every step you took, fading with age, with your deaths and portal hops marked. If the thread stops at a cliff edge and a little cross sits at the bottom, Odin did warn you.
Odin's Nudge: alt-tabbed while something eats you? Odin flashes the taskbar and knocks when you're hurt, an enemy closes in, a raid starts or chat says your name. For the falls you weren't there for.
Odin's Latch: Odin shuts the doors you opened when it matters: an enemy close, nightfall or a raid at your base. One shuts the door, the other points out the drop beyond the balcony.
Odin's Second Hand: bow out and an enemy close, Odin swaps in your best melee weapon for it, and hands the bow back once it's gone. Handy for whatever is waiting at the bottom.
Odin's Free Refills: no stamina costs while the coast is clear, normal costs once a threat is near. Climbing back up is on the house.
Odin's Wanted Posters: look at a creature and press E for its health, weaknesses and drops. Know what hits harder than the ground.
Odin's Almanac: press K for a forecast of the next weather changes in your biome. Rain makes the cliff path no shorter, only wetter.
Odin's Saga: sleep or log out and Odin reads you the saga of your day; press J for a lifetime of deeds. "Fell 22 metres, as advised against" is a deed, technically.
Odin's Hearth: press N at home for your comfort level and the cheapest piece to build next. Build a second floor. Then read the readout from it.
Odin's Pantry: press P for your foods, what you could cook right now, and Odin's pick for your biome. More health means more drops you walk away from.
Odin's Raven Returns: after you die, a raven guards your grave; press H to see where it is and what killed you. The raven will put "the ground". Odin will put "told you".
Odin's Drunk Cam: drink a mead and the world sways; the more meads, the more it sways. Odin suggests reading the readout before the third mead, not after.
Odin's Weapon Memories: every weapon remembers what it has done and earns a name from it. Your legs have memories too, mostly of landings.
Odin's Stone Whispers: Odin whispers when a Rock or Mysterious Rock is near; press 9 and he turns your gaze to it. If it's at the bottom of a cliff, take the long way round.
Odin's Dusk Horn: a low horn before nightfall, and press Home for the time to dark and the way to your bed. Hurrying home in the dark is how cliffs get you.
Odin's Knot: log out and Odin asks what you were doing; log back in and he reads it back. Press ' to retie it. "Find the way down" is a fine thing to tie a knot about.
CHANGELOG
Changelog
0.1.0
- First release: a small readout shows the drop and the damage the landing will do. Red when the landing would kill you.
Style(BesideCrosshair): two short lines just left of the crosshair, the drop ("12 m") and the damage ("~50 dmg").BelowCrosshairputs one line under the crosshair instead, with the health you'd have left as well.- At a ledge (
ShowAtLedge, on): standing at an edge and looking down over a drop of at leastMinDrop(4m). - While falling (
ShowWhileFalling, on): once you've droppedMinDrop, measured from the top of the fall, as the game measures it. - The game's own fall-damage sums: free up to 4 m, rising to 100 at 20 m, with the Feather Cape and other landing-softening effects, and the world's damage setting, counted as the game counts them.
- When the landing would kill you, Odin says so in one line, once per drop (
WarnIfFatal, on). TextScale(1, 0.5 to 2) sizes the readout and Odin's line. At1they follow the game's own HUD scale (screen height and the game's GUI scale setting), so they stay the same size on ultrawide screens.- Ledges off cliffs, rocks with rounded edges, and player-built floors, walls and roofs
are found reliably. Slopes too steep to stand on (over
SlopeAngle,38°, the game's own limit) count as part of the drop, followed along the crosshair to where they level out. Walkable slopes don't count. LookDownAngle(14°): how far down you look before the ledge readout checks.Units(metresorfeet). No keys, no items, no network messages.
