GhostWalk
A WoW-style "release spirit and run back to your corpse" death experience for Valheim.
When you die, instead of just respawning at your bed with a mad dash back to loot your grave, you rise as a spirit at your respawn point. You can fly or walk back to your body to recover your gear the normal way, or find the Spirit of Resurrection and pay a small price to come back to life on the spot.
What happens when you die
- You rise as a ghost. A translucent wisp takes the place of your character, the screen washes blue, and a pin marks your corpse on the map.
- You're safe. While a ghost you take no damage, can't be attacked, can't fight back, and (for the most part) enemies simply won't notice you.
- Get back to life one of two ways:
- Walk it off — make your way to your tombstone and loot it like normal. You're back to full ghost-free life the moment you do.
- Call the Spirit of Resurrection — a helper NPC that appears near your respawn point. Talk to it to revive on the spot instead of making the trip, at a cost (see below).
Features
- Ghost form on death — invulnerable, can't attack, no stamina drain, moves faster than normal.
- Grounded by default, fly when you want — you start out walking normally so you don't float through your own base; press Jump while grounded and flight kicks in (Space to rise, crouch to descend, move toward where you're looking). If you ever end up airborne without flying — fell off a ledge, got knocked off — flight switches on automatically so you're never stuck falling.
- Spirit of Resurrection — an NPC that lets you revive instantly instead of walking back to your corpse. Costs a small skill penalty and some durability on your equipped gear, plus a temporary debuff (see below). It also hands back whatever gear you were wearing when you died, straight from your tombstone.
- Resurrection Sickness — the price of an instant revive: reduced stamina regeneration, shorter food buff durations, and a temporary cap on your max health. Fades on its own after a while.
- Teleport back to the Spirit — don't want to open your grave? Alt-interact (or hold E, depending on config) on your tombstone, or press a dedicated hotkey (default Home) from anywhere, to instantly return to the Spirit instead.
- Enemies leave you alone — creatures across every biome, from a Meadows Boar to end-game bosses, are blocked from noticing, targeting, or chasing a ghost.
- The map doesn't fill in while you're dead — flying/walking around as a ghost won't reveal new areas of the map. If you play with shared map progression, teammates exploring while you're a ghost still shows up on your map as normal — only your own ghosted movement is paused.
- Other players see you as a wisp too — if they also have GhostWalk installed, your character model is hidden and replaced with the same glowing wisp on their screen while you're a ghost.
- Ghost music — drop an audio file next to the mod and it plays while you're a ghost, fading in on death and out on revive, and ducking the game's own music underneath it.
- Silent footsteps, frost aura, and a subtle screen tint round out the "you are not really here" feeling.
Almost everything above can be turned off or tuned in the config file if it's not your thing — see below.
Keybinds
| Action | Key | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Take off / start flying | Jump | Only while a ghost and standing on the ground. Not needed if you've turned off "fly on jump only" in the config (see below) — flight then starts immediately on death instead. |
| Fly up / down | Space / Crouch | Standard fly controls, once flight is active. |
| Loot your tombstone (normal revive) | E | Same as looting any container. |
| Talk to / force-revive at the Spirit of Resurrection | E | Only appears while you're a ghost. |
| Teleport to the Spirit of Resurrection | Alt + E (or hold E, depending on config) on your grave | Configurable which trigger is used. |
| Teleport to the Spirit of Resurrection (from anywhere) | Home | Configurable hotkey; works without needing to find your grave first. |
Requirements
- Valheim (BepInEx modded install)
- BepInEx
- HarmonyX (comes with BepInEx)
No other mods are required. If you're playing with others, everyone who wants to see ghosted players as a wisp (rather than a floating character model) needs GhostWalk installed too — the effect only shows up for people who have it.
Installation
- Install BepInEx for Valheim if you haven't already (most mod managers, e.g. r2modman/Thunderstore Mod Manager, do this automatically).
- Drop
GhostWalk.dllinto yourBepInEx/pluginsfolder. - Launch the game once to generate the config file, then adjust settings to taste (see below) — or use a config-editing mod like Configuration Manager in-game.
Configuration
Everything is adjustable from the BepInEx config file (or a config manager mod). Settings are grouped as:
- General — master enable/disable switch for the whole mod.
- Ghost — the core death/ghost-form experience: movement speed, invulnerability, flight (including whether it requires jumping to start), stamina, map-exploration pausing, enemy targeting, corpse pin, and how close to your body you need to respawn before ghost mode is skipped entirely.
- Visuals — the wisp model, its tint color, the screen wash, and the frost aura.
- Music — ghost-form ambience: on/off, volume, and whether the game's own music is muted while it plays.
- Revive — tombstone-looting behavior and the teleport-to-Spirit failsafe (which key/interaction triggers it).
- SpiritOfResurrection — whether the Spirit NPC is available at all, and the cost of using it (skill loss, durability loss, and the strength/duration of Resurrection Sickness).
If something doesn't look right after a game update, check the BepInEx log (LogOutput.log) — GhostWalk is built to keep working even if a few individual features can't find what they're looking for on a new game version, and it logs a line explaining exactly what it skipped rather than failing silently or crashing.
Multiplayer
GhostWalk is a client-side mod — install it on whichever clients you want the experience for. It doesn't require the server or other players to have it, though a couple of features (seeing other ghosted players as a wisp) only work for players who also have it installed.

CHANGELOG
GhostWalk v1.4.3
- Minor tweaks.
GhostWalk v1.4.2
- Trying to configure the flight mode to turn off when the player is grounded. Sorry for the constant updates.
GhostWalk v1.4.1
- Added the mechanic to return to ground speed once the player lands from flight.
GhostWalk v1.4.0
Fixed
- Enemies outside the Meadows still targeting the ghost. Creatures in the Plains, Black Forest, and other biomes - along with bosses - could still notice, chase, and lock onto a ghosted player even though weaker Meadows creatures (Greydwarf, Boar, Neck) were correctly ignoring them. Root cause: a creature can end up targeting someone through several different paths (its own scan, a pack-mate's alert, a boss's own targeting logic), and only one of those paths - the creature's own scan - was being blocked. A new patch now hooks the actual point where a target gets assigned (
SetTarget), so the ghost can't be locked onto no matter which path tried to do it. Diagnostic logging was added alongside it so any remaining edge case shows up clearly in the log instead of silently failing. - Map still revealing new areas while ghosted, in some configurations. The exploration-blocking patch is now resolved by scanning for the right game method at runtime instead of assuming one exact signature, and logs plainly if it can't find a match - so a future game update can't silently disable this feature without at least a clear warning in the log. (Shared map progression from other players, when enabled, is intentionally left untouched - your own ghost simply stops adding new fog of its own.)
Changed
- Ghost flight no longer starts automatically. Previously, flight switched on the instant you became a ghost, which meant floating through floors and walls of your own base while just trying to walk around. Ghost form now starts grounded - normal walking, normal collision - and flight only switches on once you press Jump and leave the ground, matching how you'd expect a "hop up and fly off" trigger to work. If you're airborne without flying for more than a second (walked off a ledge, got knocked off), flight kicks in automatically so you're never stuck falling with no way to catch yourself. The old always-fly-immediately behavior is still available by turning off the new
Ghost > FlightOnJumpOnlyconfig option.
Added
- New config option:
Ghost > FlightOnJumpOnly(default: on).
GhostWalk Update v1.3.9 Minor tweaks. Still trying to figure out why map is being explored while in ghost form.
GhostWalk Update v1.3.8 Updated to prevent map exploration while in Ghost form.
GhostWalk Update v1.3.7 Added the ability to fly while in Ghost Form. This should alleviate the issue with cross water tombstones and no portal access. Removed Stamina Drain while in Ghost Form.
GhostWalk Update v1.3.6 Changed the text and keybind for the Teleport from Tombstone back to the Spirit of Resurrection. New Keybind is 'Home' Have yet to test if changing the keybind works at all. But this is working in the right direction.
GhostWalk Update v1.3.5 --- Still testing, would of tested in a closed environment but my options are limited right now. Update and use at your own risk Added Ghost Wisp form to replace the playermodel during the 'Ghost Walk' Added a penalty when using the Spirit of Resurrection to cap HP at 25 for the 15 minute duration. Attempting to fix the teleport back to the Spirit of Resurrection.
