World and Performance: all mods and settings

Smoother sailing, vein mining, less fog and smoke, fewer lights from glowing plants, autosaves at quiet moments and an optional lag report.

Below: every mod in this pack in detail, with all its settings and their defaults.

How it works

  • Open the settings (F1). At the top, 0 - Sub-mods has a switch for every mod in this pack: turn on only what you want. Switching one off removes it right away, no restart.
  • Below that, every mod has its own settings, under its name.
  • F1 needs a config manager mod, e.g. ConfigurationManager by shudnal (included in Digi Modpack). Without one the mods still run with their default settings, and you can change the settings in r2modman: Config editor → digi.valheim.world.cfg.
  • Upgrading from the separate DigiTeam mods: your settings are copied over automatically the first time. Remove the separate ones (a mod that is still installed separately is skipped here).
  • Mods that need another mod only start when that mod is installed; the rest work without it.
Mod What it does Needs Default
Sailing Tweaks Tailwind while steering, faster ships, no wave damage and more. - on
Vein Mining Hold Left Alt while mining: when one piece breaks, the whole ore deposit breaks, with full XP. - on
Fog Reducer A fog and a brightness slider per biome, plus ones for the Mistlands mist, the Ashlands heat blur and cave haze. - on
Smoke Reducer Less smoke from fires, less steam from ovens and fewer Ashlands fire puffs, for better FPS. - on
Pickable Lights Glowing thistle, mushrooms, Jotun Puffs and Magecap stop adding real lights, for better FPS. - on
Smart Save The autosave waits for a quiet moment instead of freezing the game mid-fight. - on
Lag Meter Writes a short performance report to the log every 10 seconds, to find what causes lag (off by default). - off

Sailing Tweaks

Switch: F1 → 0 - Sub-mods → Sailing Tweaks (on by default).

Sailing quality of life, every part switchable.

Features

  • Always tailwind while you steer (optionally only with the sail up), and an optional minimum wind strength.
  • Faster sailing and rowing (the sail's tilt is compensated, so the ship does not heel over more).
  • No wave-slam damage (capsizing and the Ashlands' burning sea still hurt).
  • Push ships by hand: walking into a ship pushes it much harder, to turn or launch big ships.
  • Hide your sail so it does not block the view, and reveal more map while at sea.

Settings (F1)

In F1 these are under Sailing Tweaks - ..., below the switches.

1 - Wind

Setting Default What it does
Always tailwind on While you steer a ship, the wind always blows from behind.
Only with sail up off Tailwind only while the sail is up; while rowing you get the real wind.
Minimum wind strength (%) 0 While you steer, the wind is always at least this strong. 0 = normal (no wind can leave you stuck). (range 0 to 100)

2 - Speed

Setting Default What it does
Sailing speed multiplier 10 Push from the sail, times this. The ship gets faster, but less than this number, because water slows a fast ship down more. (range 1 to 20)
Rowing speed multiplier 2 Rowing power, times this (forward and backward). (range 1 to 10)

3 - Ship

Setting Default What it does
No wave damage on Ships take no damage from slamming into waves. Capsizing and the Ashlands' burning sea still hurt.
Stronger push on Walking into a ship from outside pushes it much harder, so you can turn or launch big ships by hand.
Push strength 4 How hard you push a ship by walking into it (higher = moves faster). (range 1 to 20)

4 - View

Setting Default What it does
Hide sail off Hide the sail of the ship you are on while it is up, so it does not block your view. Only on your screen.
Map reveal radius at sea 2 How far around you the map gets uncovered while you are on a ship, times this. (range 1 to 5)

Vein Mining

Switch: F1 → 0 - Sub-mods → Vein Mining (on by default).

Hold Left Alt while mining an ore deposit with your pickaxe. When the piece you are mining breaks, the rest of the deposit breaks with it, and everything it drops lands at your feet.

Features

  • Works on copper, tin, iron, silver, obsidian, black marble and other ore deposits (or on every rock, if you like).
  • Pickaxe XP for the whole deposit, as if you had mined every piece yourself (with an XP multiplier).
  • Your pickaxe only wears down for the hits you made; optionally for the whole deposit.
  • Works with mods that change rock drops (Star Level System, Epic Loot mining effects, ...): every extra piece is broken by an ordinary hit through the game's own code, so their changes apply. Changes no game code.
  • Two ways to trigger it: when the first piece breaks (default), or on your first hit.
  • Quiet: no hit sound or damage number for every piece, just the break effects. Optional message "Vein mined: 23 pieces".
  • Configurable key and controller button (default: press the left stick), or always on.

Notes

  • Only the player who mines needs the mod. "Drops near you" and the quiet effects work on deposits your game looks after: when you play alone or host, or when you were the first player near the deposit.

Settings (F1)

In F1 these are under Vein Mining - ..., below the switches.

1 - Vein mining

Setting Default What it does
Enabled on Turn vein mining on or off.
Key LeftAlt Hold this key while mining with a pickaxe to mine the whole deposit.
Controller button JoyLStick Hold this controller button while mining to mine the whole deposit (JoyLStick = press the left stick). None = keyboard only. (options: None, JoyLStick, JoyRStick, JoyLBumper, JoyRBumper, JoyLTrigger, JoyRTrigger, JoyDPadUp, JoyDPadDown, JoyDPadLeft, JoyDPadRight, JoyButtonX, JoyButtonY)
Always on off Mine whole deposits without holding the key.
When the deposit breaks WhenFirstPieceBreaks WhenFirstPieceBreaks: mine one piece as usual, and when it breaks the rest of the deposit breaks with it. OnFirstHit: the whole deposit breaks on your first hit. (options: WhenFirstPieceBreaks, OnFirstHit)
Works on OreDepositsOnly OreDepositsOnly: copper, tin, iron, silver, obsidian, black marble and other ore deposits. AllRocks: every rock you can mine with a pickaxe, big stones too. (options: OreDepositsOnly, AllRocks)
Also counts as ore Obsidian, SoftTissue, BlackMarble Item names (comma separated) that make a rock an ore deposit. Items with "Ore" or "Scrap" in their name always count.
Max pieces 200 Most extra pieces that break at once. (range 1 to 1000)
Max distance (m) 30 Only pieces up to this many meters from the piece you hit break with it. (range 1 to 100)

2 - Skill and durability

Setting Default What it does
XP for the whole deposit on Get Pickaxe XP for every piece, as if you had mined each one yourself. Off = XP only for the hits you made.
XP multiplier 1 Multiplies the XP for the extra pieces: 1 = the same as mining them by hand. (range 0 to 5)
Durability for the whole deposit off Your pickaxe wears down as if you had mined every piece yourself. Off = only the hits you made wear it down.

3 - Drops and effects

Setting Default What it does
Drops near you on Everything the deposit drops lands at your feet instead of all over the deposit. Works on deposits your game looks after: when you play alone or host, or when you were the first player near the deposit.
Hit effects for every piece off Hit sounds and damage numbers for every extra piece. Off = only the break effects, quieter and smoother (on deposits your game looks after, as above).
Show message on Show "Vein mined: 23 pieces" in the top left corner.

Fog Reducer

Switch: F1 → 0 - Sub-mods → Fog Reducer (on by default).

Less fog, your way: one slider per biome, plus one for the thick Mistlands mist clouds.

Features

  • A fog slider for every biome: Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain, Plains, Ocean, Mistlands, Ashlands, Deep North, and one for anything else (modded biomes). 100% = vanilla, 0% = no fog.
  • A separate slider for the Mistlands mist particles (the clouds you walk through), which are not fog.
  • A brightness slider per biome (50-300%, 100 = vanilla): scales the light in the shadows and the sun or moon while you are in that biome, e.g. to see around you in the dark Ashlands. Fades between biomes like the fog.
  • Ashlands mist: the Ashlands weathers (most of all the misty one) add their own mist clouds on top of the fog. A separate slider for those, like the one for the Mistlands mist.
  • Ashlands heat: the shimmering heat haze in the air all around you, which makes everything look smeared and wobbly, gets its own slider (off by default; also less for the graphics card to draw). And when you heat up (running in the sun, near lava, in the hot sea) the game blurs the whole screen: one slider for that blur (off by default) and one for the whole heat screen effect, including the hot screen edges. The heat and its damage are not changed.
  • Caves and dungeons: a slider for the thick drifting mist in the Ashlands' Morgen caves, and one for the cloudy dust haze around you inside dungeons (burial chambers, sunken crypts, Morgen caves and more; the tiny dust specks stay). Fewer clouds also means less for the graphics card to draw.
  • When you cross into another biome the fog fades to its new level over a few seconds instead of popping.
  • Changes apply instantly from Configuration Manager (F1).

Notes

  • Client-side and visual only: every player can choose their own levels.
  • Fog also hides distant terrain loading in; at 0% you may see more pop-in far away.

Settings (F1)

In F1 these are under Fog Reducer - ..., below the switches.

Ashlands

Setting Default What it does
Mist particles 50 The mist clouds of the Ashlands weather (thickest when it is misty), which come on top of the fog: 100 = normal, 50 = half, 0 = none. The fog itself is the Ashlands slider under Fog per biome. (range 0 to 100)

Ashlands heat

Setting Default What it does
Heat blur 0 The wobbly, blurred screen when you heat up in the Ashlands (running in the sun, near lava, in the hot sea): 100 = normal, 0 = no blur. The heat itself and its damage are not changed. (range 0 to 100)
Heat screen effect 100 The whole heat screen effect (the blur and the hot screen edges): 100 = normal, 0 = off. Off also saves one full-screen pass on the graphics card. You still hear the sizzling and see the burning particles around you when you heat up. (range 0 to 100)
Heat haze in the air 0 The shimmering heat haze in the air all around you in the Ashlands, which makes everything look smeared and wobbly: 100 = normal, 0 = none. Less haze is also less for the graphics card to draw (every haze particle draws what is behind it again). (range 0 to 100)

Brightness per biome

Setting Default What it does
Meadows 100 How bright it is in the Meadows (the light in the shadows and the sun or moon): 100 = normal, 150 = half again as bright, 200 = twice as bright. (range 50 to 300)

Mistlands 100 How bright it is in the Mistlands (the light in the shadows and the sun or moon): 100 = normal, 150 = half again as bright, 200 = twice as bright. (range 50 to 300)
Ashlands 100 How bright it is in the Ashlands (the light in the shadows and the sun or moon): 100 = normal, 150 = half again as bright, 200 = twice as bright. (range 50 to 300)
Deep North 100 How bright it is in the Deep North (the light in the shadows and the sun or moon): 100 = normal, 150 = half again as bright, 200 = twice as bright. (range 50 to 300)
Other / unknown 100 How bright it is in biomes added by other mods: 100 = normal, 200 = twice as bright. (range 50 to 300)

Caves and dungeons

Setting Default What it does
Morgen cave mist 50 The thick drifting mist in the Morgen caves of the Ashlands: 100 = normal, 50 = half, 0 = none. Fewer mist clouds is also less for the graphics card to draw. (range 0 to 100)

Other / unknown 50 Fog in biomes added by other mods: 100 = normal, 50 = half, 0 = no fog. (range 0 to 100)

Mistlands

Setting Default What it does
Mist particles 50 The thick Mistlands mist you walk through (not the same as fog): 100 = normal, 0 = none. (range 0 to 100)

Smoke Reducer

Switch: F1 → 0 - Sub-mods → Smoke Reducer (on by default).

Every smoke puff from a fire, oven or kiln is a separate physics object that lives about 13 seconds, and the game keeps up to 100 of them around you, often trapped under roofs. At a base with many fires that costs noticeable FPS.

Features

  • Fires spawn smoke puffs less often (default: half as often).
  • Fewer puffs alive at once (default 50 instead of 100); the oldest fade out first, as the game itself does.
  • Less steam and smoke from the food in ovens and cooking stations (default: half). The oven's mouth no longer fills the room with steam.
  • Fires burn exactly as before; smoke columns are just a bit thinner.
  • The Ashlands' spreading fire (burning ground and burning buildings): fewer flame puffs and sparks, fainter smoke clouds rising from it, and fewer of the puffs it throws each time it burns something (default: half each). Visual only: the fire still burns, spreads and hurts as before (its smoke clouds still rise, since fires choke on their own smoke; you just see less of them), so keep some flames to see where it is.

Notes

  • Client-side; smoke is not shared between players.

Settings (F1)

In F1 these are under Smoke Reducer - ..., below the switches.

Ashlands fire

Setting Default What it does
Fire flames (%) 50 The flame puffs and sparks of the spreading fire in the Ashlands (burning ground and burning buildings): 100 = normal, 50 = half, 0 = none. Visual only: the fire still burns and hurts, so keep some flames to see where it is. (range 0 to 100)
Fire smoke (%) 50 The smoke of the spreading fire: the smoke clouds it sends up (made fainter; they still rise, since fires choke on their own smoke) and the puffs each time it burns something: 100 = normal, 50 = half, 0 = none. (range 0 to 100)

Smoke

Setting Default What it does
Spawn interval multiplier 2 Fires make smoke this many times less often: 2 = half the smoke, 1 = normal. Less smoke = better FPS. (range 1 to 5)
Max smoke puffs 50 Most smoke puffs around you at once (normal 100); the oldest fade first. Lower = better FPS. (range 10 to 100)
Oven and cooking steam (%) 50 Steam and smoke from food in ovens and cooking stations (cooking, done and burnt food): 100 = normal, 0 = none. (range 0 to 100)

Pickable Lights

Switch: F1 → 0 - Sub-mods → Pickable Lights (on by default).

Glowing pickables like thistle, yellow mushrooms and the Mistlands' Jotun Puffs and Magecap each carry a real light. A field of them adds dozens of lights the GPU has to draw every frame. This mod switches those lights off.

Features

  • The plants still look glowing; they just no longer light up their surroundings.
  • Choose which pickables (by internal name). Default: thistle, yellow mushrooms, Jotun Puffs and Magecap. Others that glow and can be added: blue cave mushrooms (frost caves), Royal Jelly, glow worms.
  • Changes apply right away, no restart.

Settings (F1)

In F1 these are under Pickable Lights - ..., below the switches.

General

Setting Default What it does
Lights off on Glowing pickables (thistle, yellow mushrooms, Jotun Puffs, Magecap) still glow, but no longer light up their surroundings. Better FPS where many of them grow.
Pickables Pickable_Thistle, Pickable_Mushroom_yellow, Pickable_Mushroom_JotunPuffs, Pickable_Mushroom_Magecap Which pickables lose their light, by internal name (the one the spawn console command uses), comma-separated. Others that glow: Pickable_Mushroom_blue (frost caves), Pickable_RoyalJelly, Pickable_GlowWorm.

Smart Save

Switch: F1 → 0 - Sub-mods → Smart Save (on by default).

Valheim autosaves every 30 minutes, wherever you are, and on a big world that freezes the game for a moment. Smart Save keeps the interval but waits for a quiet moment.

Features

  • Saves right away while the inventory, map or a menu is open, while sitting or in bed, or after standing still for a few seconds with no creature chasing you.
  • Never saves in the middle of a fight, while running or while sailing.
  • Never more than a few minutes late (configurable), so no progress is at risk.
  • Adjustable save interval and an optional "Autosaving..." message.

Notes

  • The host's game decides when the world is saved, so the host needs this mod.

Settings (F1)

In F1 these are under Smart Save - ..., below the switches.

General

Setting Default What it does
Wait for a quiet moment on When the autosave is due, wait until you are not fighting, running or sailing. Off = save on the dot, like normal.
Save every (minutes) 30 How often the world is saved. Normal is 30. (range 5 to 120)
Wait at most (minutes) 5 If no quiet moment comes, save anyway after this long, so no progress is at risk. (range 1 to 30)
Standing still counts after (s) 3 Standing still this long (with no creature chasing you) counts as a quiet moment. (range 1 to 30)
Show save message on Show "Autosaving..." in the top left corner when the autosave starts.

Lag Meter

Switch: F1 → 0 - Sub-mods → Lag Meter (off by default).

A diagnostic tool for finding out why a place lags. Every few seconds it writes a line to the BepInEx log (BepInEx/LogOutput.log).

What it logs

  • FPS, ms per frame, worst frame and garbage collections.
  • Loaded point lights (and how many cast shadows), smoke puffs, fires burning, building pieces, plants, network objects and physics bodies.
  • Milliseconds per frame spent in the main game systems (scripts, object streaming, network, building support, plants, fires, smoke, grass, terrain).
  • Once a minute: the 25 most common loaded object types and which objects the lights belong to.

How to use

Stand where it lags for a minute, then walk somewhere that does not lag for comparison, and read the [Lag] lines.

Notes

  • Client-side. Measuring costs a little performance; disable or remove it when done.

Settings (F1)

In F1 these are under Lag Meter - ..., below the switches.

General

Setting Default What it does
Enabled on Measure and log. Turn off (or remove the mod) when done.
Interval (seconds) 10 Seconds per log line. (range 2 to 120)
