The Floods
Watch the horizon. Prepare the coast. Survive what comes ashore.
The Floods is a rare extreme-weather mod for Valheim. It turns the coast into something worth watching: a calm voyage can become uncertain, a familiar shoreline can change, and dark weather may carry more meaning than it first appears.
This README deliberately keeps part of the experience hidden. The world is more interesting when players discover its warnings for themselves.
V0.8 update
The Floods now uses a quieter, more natural random water-cycle system.
Events are no longer tied to a simple daily roll. Instead, the world builds toward changes over time, with hidden recovery periods between them. This keeps the coast unpredictable without making it feel constantly attacked.
The sea does not only rise. During certain rare conditions, it may retreat and reveal parts of the coast normally claimed by water. Some changes are milder than others.
What it adds
- Rare world-changing weather and water events.
- A hidden, randomised water-cycle scheduler with calmer periods between events.
- Rising seas that can threaten low coasts, docks, and careless sailors.
- Occasional falling water levels that can change familiar shorelines.
- Storm events with variable severity.
- Omen periods, darkened skies, distant storm pressure, rain, thunder, and rough seas.
- Water levels and event strength that are rolled once, saved, and shared with connected players.
- Server-controlled events that synchronise to everyone in the world.
- Full configuration for players who want a gentler or harsher world.
Installation
Thunderstore / r2modman
Install The Floods through your preferred mod manager. It requires the Valheim BepInEx pack.
Manual installation
- Install BepInEx for Valheim.
- Create this folder if it does not already exist:
Valheim/BepInEx/plugins/TheFloods
- Put
TheFloods.dllinside that folder. - Start Valheim once. The config file will appear in:
Valheim/BepInEx/config/marc.thefloods.cfg
For multiplayer, install the mod on the server/host and every player joining that world. The host controls events and synchronises their state to clients.
Configuration
The config file lets you adjust:
- how often the world can change;
- recovery time between natural events;
- event duration and possible water-level range;
- storm, sky, and lightning intensity;
- debug controls and logging.
The default settings are built for a survival-focused game: memorable events, quiet stretches between them, and enough uncertainty that the coast never becomes completely routine.
Back up worlds before experimenting with very high or very low water settings.
Console commands
Press F5 to open the Valheim console. Commands must be run by the world host or server.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
floods help |
Shows the Floods command summary. |
floods status |
Shows the active event, phase, current water offset, and rolled event strength. |
floods schedule |
Shows limited scheduler information for testing. |
floods event stormtide |
Starts a Storm Tide in its omen phase. |
floods event flashsurge |
Starts a Flash Surge in its omen phase. |
floods event greatflood |
Starts The Great Flood in its omen phase. |
floods event drought |
Starts a Drought in its omen phase. |
floods event <event> omen|rise|peak|recede |
Starts a named event in a chosen phase. |
floods start omen|rise|peak|recede |
Starts a custom debug event in a chosen phase. |
floods set <metres> |
Instantly sets a custom water offset. Negative values lower the water. |
floods fastforward |
Advances the active event to its next phase. |
floods stop |
Stops the active event and restores normal runtime water behaviour. |
floods probe |
Writes water and environment diagnostics to BepInEx/LogOutput.log. |
Named events roll their own strength when they begin. That result is saved with the active event so it stays stable through reloads and for connected players.
Notes
- The mod changes runtime water behaviour only. It does not regenerate terrain or permanently edit the world's terrain.
- Build coastal bases with care.
- Do not assume every dark horizon means the same thing.
- Do not assume every unusually quiet shoreline is safe either.
Looking ahead
Future updates are planned to bring more danger to extreme weather, including lightning strikes and wildfires.
